Ah, Led Zeppelin. The most versatile, and best, rock band in history and, yep, they definitely had their own "zest". Lots of great bands out there but none were able to capture their magic. Because they were so versatile and their discography so diverse, they really can't be pigeon-holed as having any one particular sound other than their own. So many of their songs were stellar so it's difficult to come up with a recommendation list. It would be about a mile long. I'd say start with album 1 track 1 and just keep going if you really want to learn what they were all about. You'll discover your own favorites along the way, songs that will "speak" to you but weren't necessarily recommended by anyone. If you do studio cuts on a first listen, which I recommend because Page was a genius producer, then a live performance of any song in particular that you like (if you can find decent video, not all are equal), that would be cool. Most of their live performances were fire and really shouldn't be missed. Very nice reaction, thanks, and I appreciated that you took a bit of time to research the group. Looking forward to more Zeppelin reactions.

@andyallan2909

Zeppelin didn't really have all that many hits, as they didn't believe in them and rarely released tracks as 'singles.' If it's not a single it can't get in the singles charts and be a hit. Having said that, the recordings by the greatest rock band of all time are exceptionally well known by those who revere this genre, and their style followed (and often poorly copied) by Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and so many other copy-cats who came after them. All four of these guys were real musicians.

What always blows me away is the context of the first couple Zeppelin albums. NOTHING sounded like that. I can't even imagine what it must have been like opening that album and putting it on the turntable for the first time when it originally came out. Mindblowing. Only thing that was even similar before Zeppelin I was _maybe_ Helter Skelter by the Beatles. Also, John Bonham is the best rock drummer who ever lived.

OMG Dude! You should spend time exploring THIS band. This is a zero contest: Led Zepplin is the best band. I’m 63 and have continued watching music, still keep up with everything. Nothing compares to this talented band. I could recommend something but I don’t know where to begin. Though they are from England, their blues are second to none. That’s one reason why people here went crazy over them when they first came out. So for blues, check out their first blues song “You Shook Me” from their first album. Then, listen to their dozens of other mind-blowing songs.

I'd second this suggestion. As a 'historical record' the whole of the 'Celebration Day' concert is absolutely the best. It's recent enough for excellent video and excellent sound, but add to that a performance that is out of this world - You could play anything from this concert and it'll smash your pre-conceptions.

Welcome to the world of Led Zeppelin. I suggest you do album reviews and do at least the first 5 studio albums. The 6th, 7th, and 8th albums are good too, but the first 5 are my favorites. Be ready to be surprised by how talented and diverse this band is. After you have heard "Stairway to Heaven" from their 4th album, you should find the video from the Kennedy Center Honors of 2012 where Led Zeppelin is honored and "Stairway to Heaven" is covered by Ann and Nancy Wilson from the band Heart. Look for the one with at least 34 million views. The original drummer for Led Zeppelin, John Bonham, is replaced by his son, Jason, and he kills it! His dad would be proud! Then you need to check out the live video of "Kashmir" from their 2007 Celebration Day concert held at London's O2 Arena. It has over 130 million views! Again, Jason Bonham fills in for his late father at drums. These guys sounded better than ever, even at their age. Enjoy.

it's a solid branch to have pulled yourself onto man. i'm a huge fan of Tool and of early Verve, their albums 'Aenima' and 'A Storm in Heaven' are my favourite 'rock' albums of all time and the two bands could arguably be the next fork along this branch, with Tool taking on the heavier elements of Zeppelin, and Verve glorifying the kind of psychedelia evident in the breakdown section here. Hendrix and Zeppelin picked up the bar, added a shedload more weights to it and lifted it as high as it had ever been, and Tool have been running with it for a good while now. peace..

Ok, the first album is an absolute *BANGER*. The worst track on there is Communication Breakdown and a ton of people LOVE that song. Anything off the first four albums (I, II, III, and Untitled (aka "Zoso")) is a great intro to the band. My picks for the three you absolutely have to hear first are probably "I Can't Quit You, Babe", "Stairway To Heaven" (the live performance from MSG in 73 is particularly fine, with a truly stunning guitar solo, not that there's anything wrong with the studio version), and my favorite Zepplin song, "When The Levee Breaks" which has the best recording of drums ever made (there are (a... Very few) more impressive performances (Neil Peart, live in Frankfurt, comes to mind) but no better sound engineering). Zepplin is inarguably the finest Blues Rock band ever and if one were to say they were the best _Rock_ band ever, I wouldn't bother arguing the point. All four of them are some of the absolute finest musicians of their type to be found. Also, Zepplin was almost unique in their honest, powerful, true-to-life representations of masculine sexuality, its power and drives, and its subjective emotional resonances. While femininity was singing "I am woman, hear me roar", Robert was actually, y'know, ... roaring. Literally and figuratively. Which all a long way to say 1) I like talking about music and 2) welcome to the party!

If your doing the albums in order it's simple because the first three albums are numbered Zep1-3. LOL. 4 is an odd ball because it really dosn't have an official tittle. So peeps call it 4 or ZOSO for the four symbols on the album cover or 4 Symbols. But it is considered one of the greatest rock albums of all time so everyone would know what you mean. After that, it's Hoses of the Holy, Then my favorite Physical Graffiti. Then Presence. And finally In through the Outdoor. The Song Remains the Same is a live Album recorded at Madison Square garden just after Houses of the Holy in 1973. And is one of the best live albums ever made. Watching them live is a must because they often greatly added to their songs live and their stage presence was amazing. But if you do live, stick to The Song Remains the Same and the 1975 Earls Court to start because these two have the best sound quality. You will find Zepp is a heavily blues based band but also very diverse as well.
