One thing to keep in mind is that these bands are professionals, they know precisely how they sound, and how that sound will make people feel. So when you get a solo or a part of a song that sounds sloppy or chaotic, its definitely intentional. Some bands are purposely trying to make the listener feel uncomfortable with the sounds they are producing. Remembering this always helped me appreciate some music that was otherwise jarring.

In this song they're acknowledging how "cult of personally" can be had and used by both good and bad people (it's like a personality trait; you either "have it" or you don't). These are usually leaders with power and charisma that use their influence to reach people....and they all tend to have loyal followers irregardless of whether their intentions are pure or nefarious. JFK and Gandhi had it, but so did Mussolini and Stalin. When interviewed about the song's meaning, the band members said it's basically an observation about those in power, the similarities in their personalities regardless of intent (cult of personality), but not necessarily taking any particular stance.

The band reunited in 2008 and have been together since, and have released 3 albums since (Collideoscope, The Chair in the Doorway, and Shade). Between albums and touring the band does do side projects but have remained together as a band. Last year they streamed a live show on KZbin for covid relief early in the lock down.

The entire band is extremely talented! The singer! The drummer! The bassist! Mr. Vernon Reid DESTROYING that guitar!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 The little girl throughout the video IS KEY! You see her watching TV, as the band plays the song, she becomes mesmerized, completely engrossed. Just as the song comes to a close, she leans forward to shut off the TV. This song is an indictment of the industrial complex that is the mainstream media.....ALL platforms of media. It is the 'Cult of Personality' that you can not take at face value. This song is around 30 years old... Relevant then...even more so now. ✌️✌️ Edit: The lyrics...'....when a leader speaks that leader dies...' I believe that it refers to those politicians, religious or spiritual leaders who do not or will not conform to the narrative that the true controllers want put into the public eye.

BRAD.....All rhythm parts are riffs, if a song has 3 rhythm change ups then it has 3 different riffs ....aka guitar riffs. Bass guitar lines can also be called a bass riff. LEX is spot on
@RoverT655363 жыл бұрын
Not sure where you got that idea from. Riff “a short repeated phrase in popular music and jazz, typically used as an introduction or refrain in a song” Nothing to do with rhythm. Smoke On The Water has one riff.

@@SIXX2772 , I generally regret when I end up making comments and am often wiser, sticking them in my “not sent” folder. I could have phrased my first comment more politely. I’m old, heart attack a few years ago, and it is interesting how easy it is for comments to bring up emotions getting my heart pounding. I'm not allowed to get angry anymore. It sounds like I may have offended you since you are calling me names and such. I apologize, I could have been nicer. I've been a drummer for a while so maybe you can take that as my excuse. I used the definition because it was more precise than what I would have come up with. Nothing to do with changes in rhythm. It seems you have been taught, and perhaps been in an environment, or of an age, where is it used differently. Oh, good, now my heart has calmed down, thanks for today's exercise. Cheers.

Living Colour is different because few bands have the diversity of influences that they do: Jimi Hendrix, Santana, James Brown, Van Halen, Midnight Oil, Bad Brains, Ornette Coleman, Sonny Sharrock, James Blood Ulmer, Al Green, Frank Zappa, Ronald Shannon Jackson (Vernon Reid was in his band before Living Colour was formed), Henry Bellefonte (Will Calhoun played drums for him before Living Colour), Talking Heads (Living Colour covered them on their first album)....so on and so forth. Living Colour are politically outspoken rock, funk, punk, metal, blues, free jazz, with occasional bits of calypso, West African desert blues, electronica, hip hop... The guitar is not sloppy. It free and complex. Vernon Reid comes from a free jazz background.

When Lex says 'sloppy' I think your misinterpreting what the guitarist is doing. These guys are studio musicians. Primus is also considered 'sloppy' by some ears. Both bands are A+ musicians. Mariah Carey is a super talented vocalist. Her voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me. Music is an individual experience. No one can say what sounds good to you shouldn't sound good to you. Keep on rockin' in the free world!

As a guitarist myself for 35 years , it is sloppy but it's still good to my ears. His commitment to the solo is what makes me enjoy it. If I was a producer at the time? Yeah I may have made him play it slower clean until he could play it fast clean. But the abandoned solo was still good.
