"Mambo nº5" was a song composed and recorded by Cuban musician Perez Prado in 1950. Lou Bega sampled the last 30 seconds of the original, and that was enough to skyrocket him to international stardom in 1999.

I just had that come up yesterday. It's fundamentally not that different, in my opinion. More than a sample but not quite a cover.

THE most successfull one hit wonder ever though. as far as I remember he released that song in different countries in different summers and charted every time. he is making so much money off of that song today still. @@KaBeeM There are many one hit wonders out there that are still incredibly popular and used in commercials ect..... still making money. You claim this one was THE MOST SUCCESSFUL OF ALL TIME. What actual facts did you get that conclusion from? In no way am I saying it was not successful cause it was. I am just saying before claiming it as THE MOST..... do some research! Cheers! Also FYI....Vanilla Ice is actually the one hit wonder who made the most money for Ice Ice Baby. Also cannot forget Eye of the Tiger, Macarena, My Sharona, so many more!

I just remember he had that one song charting several times which is mostly not what summer hits do. he re-released that song all throughout europe and other parts of the world. I didn't do any research to be honest, it's just what I remember from back when he was on TV a lot. that commercial he was in last year even made a joke about how he's still cashing cheques. didn't mean to step on any ones toes or lessen your point in any way. have a good one.

So around 1999, for some reason, 1930's-1940's swing music briefly came back! This was a product of that era. Brian Setzer Orchestra was probably the cause of the comeback, with "Jump, Jive and Wail." (I would recommend reacting to that video) Most of this song (Mambo No. 5) was sampled from an original recording many years ago.

The original Mambo number 5 was composed by cuban artist Damaso Perez Prado (a.k.a. The King of Mambo), back in the 40s. In fact the Lou Bega version has some samplings, including the characteristic yelling of Damaso. Maybe, you´d like to listen to some of his mambos, they´re amazing.
