"Mambo nº5" was a song composed and recorded by Cuban musician Perez Prado in 1950. Lou Bega sampled the last 30 seconds of the original, and that was enough to skyrocket him to international stardom in 1999.

This is STILL fire! Sometimes it's all about the energy and the sound. You gotta realize that in the mid-late 90's, there was a slight resurgence of Swing music. This was just 1 of the huge swing fusion songs of that time.

THE most successfull one hit wonder ever though. as far as I remember he released that song in different countries in different summers and charted every time. he is making so much money off of that song today still. I think it was either last year or the one before he was in tv commercial during football season with that song playing in the background.

I just remember he had that one song charting several times which is mostly not what summer hits do. he re-released that song all throughout europe and other parts of the world. I didn't do any research to be honest, it's just what I remember from back when he was on TV a lot. that commercial he was in last year even made a joke about how he's still cashing cheques. didn't mean to step on any ones toes or lessen your point in any way. have a good one.

I worked in music retail in Australia during the 90s and 2000s and we were TOLD to play this song non-stop all day every day to sell it. It was a particularly cruel brand of torture. The fact I've clicked on this video proves that I must love your channel enough to put myself through it all over again.

I worked in music retail in the US in 99. I got SO sick of this song. I can't even listen to it now without cringing a little. We were selling that CD single all day every day though lol. I went back to music retail about 2004... I'm not sure which is worse, Mambo No. 5 or Somebody Told Me by The Killers. And I love the Killers, but I can't with that song after hearing it on a loop for a year.

The crazy thing about this whole thing is that Lou Bega is actually from Germany. When I first heard this song, I thought he had latin blood. The first musician to make this song famous as well as the Mambo Music was Pérez Prados from Cuba.

So around 1999, for some reason, 1930's-1940's swing music briefly came back! This was a product of that era. Brian Setzer Orchestra was probably the cause of the comeback, with "Jump, Jive and Wail." (I would recommend reacting to that video) Most of this song (Mambo No. 5) was sampled from an original recording many years ago.

Loved this song back it the day. It always reminded me of music my Dad used to play when I was a little girl by Pres Prado. Come to find out, that music was Lou Bega's inspiration for this song. The original Mambo number 5 was composed by cuban artist Damaso Perez Prado (a.k.a. The King of Mambo), back in the 40s. In fact the Lou Bega version has some samplings, including the characteristic yelling of Damaso. Maybe, you´d like to listen to some of his mambos, they´re amazing.
