Shortly after Ronnie Van Zant's grandmother died, they got together in Van Zant's apartment and started telling stories about the women that they grew up with. Rossington came up with a chord progression, and Van Zant wrote the lyrics based on advice the women had given them over the years. They wrote it in about an hour.

The lead singer, one of the guitar players, and his sister that was a back up singer died when their plane crashed back in the 70's. Along with I think two others.
