It’s actually about abusing drugs. Ronnie Van Zant wrote a song on this because Gary Rossington, one of the guitar players was in a car wreck while on drugs and alcohol. The whole band was headed down a bleak road if they didn’t change their ways Ronnie knew. The tomorrow might not be here for you part isn’t about living life to its fullest. It’s a grim warning that is things didn’t change ‘tomorrow might no be here for you! The lyrics are... Oooh that smell, can’t you smell that smell? Oooh that smell..... the smell of death surrounds you! This was on their last album that was released 2 days before the plane crash that took Ronnie’s, Cassie and Steve’s lives. The rest of the band was extremely lucky to be alive. All suffered horrible injuries. The plane ran out of fuel. That’s how there were survivors. No fire that normally kills everyone in a aircraft crash. You should read up on the history of this band. They were one of if not the best thing going in music when this happened. Such a sad story and the rest of the band suffered hard times after the crash. The band was no more with their leader gone. Allen Collins, the best guitar player ever in my book, his life led to a tragic end way to early as well. Lots of history with Lynyrd Skynyrd. From their starting out and playing, honing their craft for 7 years, 10 hrs a day in an old metal building till they finally got their break. Ronnie was a genius as a song writer. He wrote the majority of their music and never ‘wrote’ a word down on paper. He had it in his head once it came to him. Allan Collins, came up with lots of their music. He came up with the music to Freebird and the solo at the age of 14. They were an amazing band! Oct. 20, 1977 was the day Lynyrd Skynyrd sadly ended! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lynyrd_Skynyrd_plane_crash

RVZ's death was a shock to me when I was a kid so was RR (of Ozzy) I guess I was so young then and so unfamiliar to death. To this day for some reason I feel those two occasions are epic based on how I felt at the time (yes a grand pa)

He's talking about the smell of death surrounding people who do drugs & drink too much. He says "there's too much coke & too much smoke, oak tree you're in my way"...referencing all the wrecks that Gary Rossington, one of the guitarists, had because of drugs & booze. And all the drugs & drinking the whole band was doing...and if they kept on that road, they were going to die...hence, the smell of death surrounds you. My fav band...pretty much any song by them that you choose is going to be great! Don't know if you did the live version of Freebird...if not, check out both the Knebworth, England concert & the Oakland Colosseum concert in '77...just a few months before the tragic plane crash that killed lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist (short brown hair) Stevie Gaines, his sister & backup singer, Cassie Gaines, their asst road manager, Dean Kilpatrick, along with pilot & co-pilot (who caused the crash). Do live performances of their songs...their albums are great...their live concerts were awesome!! Just of the top off my head you should check out these songs...Sweet Home Alabama, Simple Man, Working For MCA, T For Texas, Gimme Three Steps, What's Your Name, Call Me The Breeze, I Know A Little, The Ballad of Curtis Loew, Saturday Night Special, The Needle & the Spoon, Gimme Back My Bullets, Tuesday's Gone, Don't Ask Me No Questions, You Got That Right, Cry For The Bad Man, Whiskey Rock-A-Roller. That should get you started!

Grew up listening to this band. DEVASTATING when their plane crashed in 1976 I believe it was. This song is about to ME, drugs, alcohol and being reckless with your life and others as well. Would be nice if people, especially the younger generations would actually listen to, hmmmmm maybe their parents, grandparents and others who have lived through these things and maybe take our knowledge and apply it, not live it.

He wasn't aware of much the whole time I was there...felt like there was a time or two he knew I was there...but as I was telling him I'd be back to see him tomorrow & that I loved him, he looked me straight in the eyes with clear focus. When I got home (I live in a different city) mama called & told me he was gone. I feel that he waited for me before leaving. Just a few days before, during a thunderstorm, he woke up worrying about me & tried to make it to me, but was too disoriented to make it too far & turned around...thank goodness. I have the note he were mama before he left that night...you could tell he wasn't thinking clearly...all he knew was that he had to get to me 😢😞

What many people may not no is Ronnie van Zandt said he'd never see 30 and more than one person heard him make that statement and that he'd go out with his boots on (slang for on the road). He died on impact of the plane crash,he was 29. Wife said also that he'd sometimes refer to himself as the Mississippi kid even though he'd never been there. Plane went down in rural Mississippi!!!! The man knew his fate somehow.

Thanks for giving this song a shot with your first-reaction. It has such a great beat and tempo that it's easy to think that this song was written for the sole purpose of "partying" to. But as Scotty England so clearly states in his earlier comment from 4-days ago, this song was written by Ronnie Van Zant as a WARNING to heavy substance abusers, and how this life-style will ultimately lead those (who do not change their ways) to self-destruct. The title of this song "That Smell" has a particular reference to heroin abusers. I was once told by a retired detective in the NYPD, that under-cover narcotics officers can detect a "heroin addict" immediately when standing in their presence, due to the fact that their body gives-off a foul-odor that is prevalent to extensive heroin abuse. Thus, as we hear several times in the song, "can't you smell that smell," and, "the smell of death surrounds you."
