Springsteen wrote "cut loose like a deuce" as a reference to the 1932 V8-powered Ford automobile, which enthusiasts dubbed the "deuce coupe"; Manfred Mann replaced that lyric with "revved up like a deuce" but a problem in the production changed the sound from deuce to douche. Bruce later quipped the song didn't get popular until Manfred Mann made it a song about feminine hygiene products. In live concerts Manfred Mann uses the word deuce and not douche.

There is a good live version from Midnight Special on KZbin,. This was a Bruce Springsteen song from 1973, which flopped. Manfred Mann's version (1976) went to #1. They've covered several Springsteen songs.

I think a lot of people, like me, thought he was saying "revved up like a DOUCHE".😁 I can't help it, that's what I'm hearing and it kinda does and doesn't makes sense at the same time. The lyrics don't seem to really matter in the song, anyway.
