What a lot of people that refused to listen to Rock and Roll back in the day didn't realize was that it wasn't just one kind of music, it was a freedom that artist had to do classical to hard rock. This is just as much Rock and Roll as Led Zepplin, or Black Sabbath. Rock and Roll included all expressions of the soul.

Band member Justin Hayward (lead singer) wrote and composed the song at age 19 while touring in Belgium and titled the song after a girlfriend gave him a gift of satin bedsheets. The song itself was a tale of a yearning love from afar, which leads many aficionados to term it as a tale of unrequited love endured by Hayward.

The singer wrote this song when he was 19. There is also a poem after the song in the original video.

All these senior band members have been together since 1964...The lead singer performing Justin Hayward joined the band in 1966.. This Song was released in 1967..they were part of the British invasion to the US in the 60's..The flutist and the drummer have passed away in the last couple years. Justin Hayward is now 77 years old and still performing. I am a bit older and still have all their songs on 45 RPM. One of my favorite groups.

The Flute is one of the few non reed instruments that you blow into without putting your lips around the Mouthpiece. One of the hardest wind instruments to master. I played the flute 65 years ago but gave it up for the clarinet.

Right. You blow across the opening of a flute, not into it. Most people consider reed instruments to be harder, though. I did.

This is the poem that goes with Nights in White Satin at the end of the song. It's only on the album Days of Future Passed. I don't know why he didn't recite it at this concert. Breathe deep the gathering gloom Watch lights fade from every room Bedsitter people look back and lament Another day's useless energy spent Impassioned lovers wrestle as one Lonely man cries for love and has none New mother picks up and suckles her son Senior citizens wish they were young Cold hearted orb that rules the night Removes the colours from our sight Red is grey and yellow white But we decide which is right And which is an illusion?

This is one of my fav songs ever! I heard this when I was growing up in the 70's and I used to sing along but I had no idea what the song was about. "Nights In White Satin" is their most famous song. Moody Blues are one of my favorite groups from the 60's-80's. Love their mix of rock with classical music. Lots of great songs such as "Go Now", "Tuesday Afternoon", "The Story In Your Eyes", "Question", "Ride My See-Saw", "I'm Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band)", "Gemini Dream", "The Voice" etc. All of their music is great! Many of their records are concept albums & meant to be listened to all at once. Sadly Ray Thomas their flute player & singer passed away in 2018 & their drummer Graeme Edge passed away in 2021.

The singer, Justin Haywood, wrote it as a teen, and for a full orchestra. This is the next to the last cut of the album, Days of Future Past, one of the first Concept" Albums. The Moody's catalog makes an anthill look simple and shallow. For rock flute, there's the Moodys and Jethro Tull.

This song and album came out when I was about 18, and it blew me away. So cool that you're groovin' to it now. Flute solos: all right, my man, you GOT to start listening to Jethro Tull. Lead singer is Ian Andersen, who also happens to be the songwriter, a fine acoustic guitar player (this is NOT acoustic music); a KILLER flute player; and a maniacal performer unlike almost anyone else. "Aqualung" is their best known album, but don't start with that song, even though it's rich. Try Locomotive Breath, Wind UP, or Psalm 43. For their live stuff...there's so much, but "Thick As a Brick, from around 1977, should do the trick. Please keep up the great work!

If you're into doing full album reactions, you would probably enjoy (and be amazed by) the album of which this song is the final track (other than the poem, which someone has kindly copy/pasted below). It's not only one of the first to explore the possibilities of music that blends rock with classical instrumentation but also one of the first ever concept albums that truly follows a theme throughout - like a classical symphony would with different movements all making a whole experience. The idea here was to celebrate a full 24-hr day here on Planet Earth. So this was the night segment. The other stand-out track is Tuesday Afternoon, which celebrates - well, the afternoon... spent lying around in a park, getting lost in the wonders of nature, possibly with a little assistance from herbal or other substances, or maybe just in a particularly meditative mood. You can listen to it as a separate track, but TBH I do think it works best as part of the whole album experience, if you do have the time and interest to go there...
