Those ear-piercing notes that you heard are called the "Whistle Register", it's the highest register that human vocal chords can produce and it's extremely hard to create and control. I live for those, it's one of Morissette's signature sounds, along with her voice breaks and growls. Hand to G*d, this girl has brought me to tears more than once, she sings with such empathy it's literally a punch in the feels.
