The Professor nickname came about because Neil Peart was, in addition to being one of the best drummers to ever do it, a very intelligent self educated man, very smart, and his lyric writing reflected that. Rush was known as "the thinking man's band", largely, because of him. RIP Professor.

Yet Bonham’s kit was a quarter that size, & was the greatest drummer ever. Only a couple lessons as a kid, & likely the only time he read music. While playing in bands he didn’t read music, played by instinct alone. With Led Zeppelin & their different genres, & how Led Zeppelin improvised live concerts., Bonham drove the beat every time.

In the 60's, John Bonham (Led Zeppelin), Ginger Baker (Cream), Mitch Mitchell (Jimi Hendrix Experience), Keith Moon (The Who), Carmine Appice (Vanilla Fudge) ... were the rock drummers that changed the art of drumming forever. In the 70's, Neil Peart of Rush took their influences and set a new standard of drumming w/ his innovation and creativity... and he still gave props to drummers of the 70's like Bill Bruford (Yes/ King Crimson), Phil Collins (Genesis) and (later) Stewart Copeland (The Police) and Alan White (Yes)... Neil Peart even studied jazz and electronic beats, as well as African rhythms and world music to bring to Rush's music. I believe Neil Peart earned the nickname 'The Professor' in Rush because he apparently resembled actor Russell Johnson, who played the role of 'The Professor' in the TV series "Gilligan's island"... and probably because he was so brainy. The members of Rush were intrigued by how many books he read on tour... and how knowledgeable and opinionated he was. It was no secret that Rush were a trio of geeks who shared a weird sense of humor together... Most rock bands would party after shows and hook up w/ women... but Neil, Geddy and Alex would just go to their hotel rooms and watch TV.

Neil takes you on a history of drumming. From tribal, rock, marching band, military band, jazz, big band swing. He learned the tribal portion from a visit to Africa. The last big with swing and paying homage Buddy Rich and to those who came before him. Yes he hits every drum at least once. His solo's aren't just "hitting a drum" he is very in tune with making music. The xylophone portion he wrote a few decades ago, called "Pieces of Eight" (yes pirate reference). Keep em coming. Neil Peart (rhymes with "ear") was one of the best percussionists ever to sit behind a kit. His solos were separate musical compositions. He also wrote most of the lyrics for Rush starting with their second album; he was not the original drummer for Rush, but joined after the first album because original drummer John Rutsey had medical issues that prevented him from continuing with the band. Fun fact: Peart was an avid motorcyclist, but he was hesitant to obtain his motorcycle license because he wasn't sure if he was coordinated enough! He wrote about it in his book "Ghost Rider: Adventures On the Healing Road". RIP Professor.

Neil Peart had a part in a school play where he was supposed to throw an apple in the air and catch it. But he dropped the apple. He failed. So he became a drummer instead. After almost starring on Gilligans Island. They gave the Professor part to that guy whose name no one remembers - Russell something? - as Neil went on to fame and fortune. Bob Denver played Gilligan. He had an earlier role on the Dobie Gillis show as Dobie's Beatnik friend Maynard G. Krebs. Maynard was allergic to work so if anyone said "work" he would go into a seizure.
