I am 47 and British and can remember watching this on MTV at a friends house (not many people had cable tv then) and being blown away by this whole unplugged. It was one of the best. The Pearl Jam is amazing too, especially Jeremy. The original of this song is unknown, its based on a few folklore tales, I believe. The version that Kurt Kobain mentions above was by Lead Belly, recorded in 1944. First recording was in the 1920s(?).

Thinking of when this song was originally written around the turn of the 19th century and the lyrics are frightening! The guy/boyfriend will be fine. But the woman is dead and she knows it. And the way kurt delivers it with desperation and anger... hopelessness... it's absolutely devastating.

You might be interested to know this, he talks about trying to buy Leadbelly's guitar for 500,000 dollars. The guitar he is playing in this sold at auction for 6.3 Million US dollars and the sweater he is wearing went for over 300,000.

She’s sleeping in the pines as in pine box…coffin. He sings the word shiver. It’s actually shiva as in sit and shiva. That’s something they did in the old days in the home because there wasn’t funeral homes. You sat up all night with the dead to make sure they were actually dead.

Think he said shiver because drugs? Kinda puts a personal take on an old folk song…. That is, he suspects infidelity and wants to get high because of it? That’s my guess, the sort of blurred line between the original and the cover when the latter is an auteur of the first degree. Ive misheard lyrics in a way that makes them more applicable to my own life. We all do. Having read Kurt’s journal, I deeply suspect that he heard this song and ascribed a lot of meaning from his own life - especially regarding infidelity. And I think if he was looking for something to say to make his girl feel even more guilty for her infidelity “shiver the whole night through” is pretty high on that list.

Yeah man - this is one of the most legendary performances in rock history, period. The entire 'Nirvana: Live Unplugged' is truly phenomenal. But this song...sits in its own space. The cover is from one one the true pioneers, a bad*** serious blues player, Leadbelly - his stuff goes all the way back to the 1920's - 40's. He's one of the ultimate early acoustic blues legends (Son House, Charley Patton, Robert Johnson, Tommy Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Skip James, John Lee Hooker....list keeps going -many of them pure Mississippi Delta blues or from Texas or the greater South) - that music from the 20's into the late 40's & early 50's, before the electric blues in Chicago took off, is the true pure root of all of modern day music from Grunge to Hip Hop, to classic rock and alt/rock and even EDM. But irrelevant, this performance is as powerful as music gets...given chills to 10's of millions and counting from 1994 till forever. Great you got to bear witness! Pines is referring to Pine trees, so the 'girl' is hiding out in the Pine forest after doing some kind of no-good!

Great choice, great reaction. I could be wrong but I believe “the pines” is just referring to a forest of pine trees. But I think there are some regions/areas/places called The Pines, as well.

This is my favourite Nirvana performance EVER! I was so pleased when 'Nirvana Unplugged' was released as an album. This is IMO the best song on there, even though it was a cover - Kurt's voice & charisma took it to a whole new level - the way he gasped & looked up in the last line - haunting, brings me to tears every time. Kurt was a gentle but troubled soul who hated fame; I was deeply affected by his tragic death, but what a wonderful legacy he left us........I wish he'd got to see his daughter grow up. *R.I.P. Kurt Cobain* 💔 PS It's a 'folk song' & is over 100 years old - sang by Appalachian Mountain dwellers. It's recorded under different titles including 'In The Pines' and 'Black Girl' - the great Lead Belly recorded it in the 1940's thus bringing folk music to a wider audience. (There's another version called 'Long Train' - kinda an amalgamation of the three with similar lyrics) I think it will always be Kurt's song now due to this AMAZING performance🖤

Its called a pine box because its made of pine wood. In the pines is referring to a stand of pine trees. which is basically just saying in the woods or forest.

Leadbelly is old school early American 1900’s black blues music The song is a lot older then even Leadbelly, it’s late 1800’s and unknown who the writer is. Kurt listened to a lot of old blues from days past, and now he owns this song.
