Genesis never actually broke up...yet. They have been on hiatus at times, though. Now, it's gonna be interesting. Phil can't play drums anymore, due to health reasons, so he has to have one of his sons play for him. Peter has yet to agree in playing again for old time's sake (scheduling, motivation, etc.). Steve Hackett has always been open to performing again with Genesis, but only if Peter joins in. *Sigh*...someday it will happen.

@@rsk47reviews59 Yes, there are shows booked...provided that COVID-19 doesn't throw a wrench in the works. However, the shows will likely be no different than it was in 2007; probably going to focus on the post-Peter Gabriel era or 1980 and later, I would think. It'd be nice if they just rehash the October 2, 1982 "Six of the Best" show and have both Peter and Steve play. Have it feature both Nicholas and Simon Collins on drums, pulling off some awesome drum duets.

It remains, to this day, MTV’s most-played music video OF ALL TIME! The video was directed by Stephen R. Johnson, famous for helming the Talking Heads’ music video “Road to Nowhere”, and partially animated by Nick Park, who later went on to create the award-winning children’s series Wallace & Gromit. On February 9, 1987, the video swept all major categories at the MTV Video Music Awards, taking home a total of nine statues-the most awards a single video has won.

He reunited with Genesis for one night in 1982 (on Mike Rutherford's birthday) as a stipulation for the band bailing Peter out of financial trouble of the WOMAD Project (WOrld Music And Dance). You can hear a bootlegged recording of the show (with pictures) here on YT under the title, 'Six of the Best'.

When I saw you were doing "Sledgehammer", my first thought was, "Well, THAT will keep him awake." Brass derives from the Stax Records house band, The Memphis Horns. Yeah, it's sex. It starts off almost as a sex-ed vídeo. Like someone else said, it manages to be blatant and subtle at the same time. I don’t remember how long it took me to understand the song’s subject, but when I did I thought the video was amazing. Re the music, isn’t almost every pop song about sex? I know many old blues songs are; you have to be “in the know” to decipher them, due to slang and coded language. Love the way the song and video were done with great playfulness and great good humor!
@piecebearer29663 жыл бұрын
Peter Gabriel was a spiritual song writer. Sledgehammer is about the Law of Attraction and the sledgehammer is the breaking up of old habits and creating your own life. That’s what the sperm is about, creation. You can see when the video ends he’s literally becoming the fabric of the universe. Listen to the words and look up the law of attraction. He’s basically saying you can have whatever you want if you allow yourself. He’s speaking as the universe to himself. His song “your eyes” is about meditation...he’s talking to himself

Most of them are sex songs! That’s why they call it rock ‘n’ roll. “Etymology. From rock (move back and forth) + and + roll; originally a verb phrase common among African Americans, meaning "to have sexual intercourse"; it was a euphemism that appeared in song titles since at least 1914 (Trixie Smith's "My Man Rocks Me With One Steady Roll").”

He actually went 'crowd-surfing' during "Lay Your Hands on Me" at a big venue! I loved him in Genesis and I really loved his solo stuff. Every song on this album is incredible. Did you catch that incredible bass work by the talented Tony Levin (also plays with King Crimson)? My favorite from 'So' is "Red Rain". "Big Time" is another funky rocker, also off 'So'. Then the previous album, 'Security' has "Shock the Monkey". Other hits: "Solsbury Hill" and "Games Without Frontiers". Lot of superb deep cuts off his albums too. Be well, stay safe! Peace from SF

He was the founding lead singer for Genesis. From the late 60’s until the late 70’s. Phil Collins was the drummer and backup singer. After Gabriel left the band, Phil Collins took over and did his magic. Peter Gabriel is so unique. Not long after this song he came out with the album “So”. It won several Grammys from the get-go. "Sledgehammer" was released in 1986. The revolutionary video was created using claymation, stop motion, and pixilation. According to Wikipedia, "Gabriel lay under a sheet of glass for 16 hours while filming the video one frame at a time".
