Everybody was pretty bummed when Genesis broke up, but both Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins went on to do some great stuff.

Genesis never actually broke up...yet. They have been on hiatus at times, though. Now, it's gonna be interesting. Phil can't play drums anymore, due to health reasons, so he has to have one of his sons play for him. Peter has yet to agree in playing again for old time's sake (scheduling, motivation, etc.). Steve Hackett has always been open to performing again with Genesis, but only if Peter joins in. *Sigh*...someday it will happen.

@@rsk47reviews59 Yes, there are shows booked...provided that COVID-19 doesn't throw a wrench in the works. However, the shows will likely be no different than it was in 2007; probably going to focus on the post-Peter Gabriel era or 1980 and later, I would think. It'd be nice if they just rehash the October 2, 1982 "Six of the Best" show and have both Peter and Steve play. Have it feature both Nicholas and Simon Collins on drums, pulling off some awesome drum duets.

It remains, to this day, MTV’s most-played music video OF ALL TIME! The video was directed by Stephen R. Johnson, famous for helming the Talking Heads’ music video “Road to Nowhere”, and partially animated by Nick Park, who later went on to create the award-winning children’s series Wallace & Gromit. On February 9, 1987, the video swept all major categories at the MTV Video Music Awards, taking home a total of nine statues-the most awards a single video has won.

Yep. Was one of the band's co-founders and left in 1975, after 'The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway' tour. He reunited with Genesis for one night in 1982 (on Mike Rutherford's birthday) as a stipulation for the band bailing Peter out of financial trouble of the WOMAD Project (WOrld Music And Dance). You can hear a bootlegged recording of the show (with pictures) here on YT under the title, 'Six of the Best'.

I am sure you'd like "Biko" (apartheid), "Don't Give Up" (with Kate Bush), "Solsbury Hill" (why he left Genesis), "In Your Eyes" (the live version in the dome), "The Rhythm Of The Heat" (african tribes who got hypnotized by making music), "Mercy Street" (Anne Sexton a writer who commited suicide).

When I saw you were doing "Sledgehammer", my first thought was, "Well, THAT will keep him awake." Brass derives from the Stax Records house band, The Memphis Horns. Yeah, it's sex. But it manages to be both blatant and subtle at the same time. The video was managed by Steven r Johnson, who also did Gabriel's next song, "Big Time," which you may also like to react to.

It starts off almost as a sex-ed vídeo. Like someone else said, it manages to be blatant and subtle at the same time. I don’t remember how long it took me to understand the song’s subject, but when I did I thought the video was amazing. Re the music, isn’t almost every pop song about sex? I know many old blues songs are; you have to be “in the know” to decipher them, due to slang and coded language. Love the way the song and video were done with great playfulness and great good humor!
@piecebearer2966

Peter Gabriel was a spiritual song writer. Sledgehammer is about the Law of Attraction and the sledgehammer is the breaking up of old habits and creating your own life. That’s what the sperm is about, creation. You can see when the video ends he’s literally becoming the fabric of the universe. Listen to the words and look up the law of attraction. He’s basically saying you can have whatever you want if you allow yourself. He’s speaking as the universe to himself. His song “your eyes” is about meditation...he’s talking to himself

"Money or Nothing" by Dire trait was among the first as well. So Peter Gabriel was the original lead singer in the band Genesis with Phil Collins on drums. Peter was a performance artist as well and had strange personas with crazy haircuts. You would have to see him to get it, lol. He left Genesis and put out his first solo album "So", and this song was on it along with another sexified ong, "Steam" which you also must see live. Hell, just watch the whole concert, you won't be sorry!

Dancing Chickens may have something to do with Julia Childs (the TV cooking show) standing up some chickens on a counter on her show & making the legs move like dancing Barbie dolls one time on her show.......... that & spanking the "naughty chicken" for falling over during another one of her shows.

Peter Gabriel in case you didn't know was the original lead singer for Genesis, and Phil Collins was the drummer. When Peter left the group Genesis Phil took over the lead singing while still drumming. Here's some of my favourite songs of Peter Gabriel solo. - Solsbury Hill - Shock the Monkey - Steam - don't give up (with Kate Bush) - in your eyes Also try these here - the musical box (with Genesis 1973 live) - Watcher in the sky (with Genesis 1972) - dancing with the moonlit Knight (with Genesis 1973) - carpet crawlers (with Genesis 1974)

Most of them are sex songs! That’s why they call it rock ‘n’ roll. “Etymology. From rock (move back and forth) + and + roll; originally a verb phrase common among African Americans, meaning "to have sexual intercourse"; it was a euphemism that appeared in song titles since at least 1914 (Trixie Smith's "My Man Rocks Me With One Steady Roll").”

Song was released in '86. Nothing like this video existed when it was made, either. (The stop-motion was done by the same studio behind Wallace and Gromit and Chicken Run.) "Solsbury Hill," "Red Rain," "Big Time" and "Come Talk To Me" are some other A+ Peter Gabriel tunes.

Genesis offsprings contains Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Steve Hackett, Mike & The Mechanics and more. So much to explore... This one came out in 1986, so there was a battle in charts between Genesis, now and former members. Read this: medium.com/cuepoint/how-everything-turned-gold-for-genesis-in-1986-ce9fdbc60b71

It's from 1986. Peter Gabriel made a career out of making trippy videos. Big Time was the other big one from this album, but don't sleep on Shock The Monkey. If you're into really unique videos, check out Let Forever Be by the Chemical Brothers. It's directed by Michel Gondry, who is an absolute genius. Gondry's also done videos for Bjork, The White Stripes, Daft Punk and Beck among others. All his stuff is brilliant.

Heya J! Sledgehammer made me think of a hidden Marvin Gaye gem, released on the Midnight Love album famous for the Sexual Healing single. The song is called.. My Love is Waiting and it is like silk and sunshine! My ultimate Dancing-on-the-beach-barefoo-in-the-warm-sand song!

Thanks! Peter Gabriel is a true artist. I saw him on this tour and it was one of the best concerts I've ever seen, and I've been to quite a few shows over the years. He actually went 'crowd-surfing' during "Lay Your Hands on Me" at a big venue! I loved him in Genesis and I really loved his solo stuff. Every song on this album is incredible. Did you catch that incredible bass work by the talented Tony Levin (also plays with King Crimson)? My favorite from 'So' is "Red Rain". "Big Time" is another funky rocker, also off 'So'. Then the previous album, 'Security' has "Shock the Monkey". Other hits: "Solsbury Hill" and "Games Without Frontiers". Lot of superb deep cuts off his albums too. Be well, stay safe! Peace from SF

Peak period MTV, my guy. This is what that channel was all about, and Peter Gabriel was the kind of artist who knew EXACTLY what was (and still is) possible with great music and hands-on artistry.

He was the founding lead singer for Genesis. From the late 60’s until the late 70’s. Phil Collins was the drummer and backup singer. After Gabriel left the band, Phil Collins took over and did his magic. Peter Gabriel is so unique. Not long after this song he came out with the album “So”. It won several Grammys from the get-go. It’s brilliant. Nothing like his previous music. It’s so cerebral and hauntingly intoxicating. I’m sure you’ve heard “In Your Eyes”.

"Sledgehammer" was released in 1986. The revolutionary video was created using claymation, stop motion, and pixilation. According to Wikipedia, "Gabriel lay under a sheet of glass for 16 hours while filming the video one frame at a time".
