It's a brilliant video. It's father vs son, student vs teacher. The youth provide the aggression, the style, the talent. The father provides the wisdom and direction.

Also, Steve Vai’s fretboard inlay is the “tree of life”, and Tim’s in tribute to Steve, is the “tree of death”.

In what I think was a live stream Polyphia told the story of how this came about. Steve sent them the track he recorded and they were excited, and sent him back a few modifications (Polyphia-style modifications). Steve wrote back that he wasn't sure he was the guy they were looking for to play what they modified. Polyphia was LIVID! "Oh my God we screwed up! We may have chased him away!" They wrote back apologizing profusely saying "You play whatever you want!" Vai didn't write back for a while and Polyphia beat themselves up for screwing up. They got a note from Steve, saying, basically, "I checked it out more, tried it, and, you guys were absolutely right -- I'll play however you need me to." Bam. The deal was done.
@themadcentrist939611 ай бұрын
No, that's not quite how it went. No one was livid. Vai was a little upset about the cuts at first because no one had ever done that before. but the reality is that the guys in the band made changes to their own parts as well for the good of the song and Vai loved the result. Polyphia was only worried that they had insulted Vai and they certainly were NOT livid.
@BroudbrunMusicMerge10 ай бұрын
I think you meant "terrified" or "mortified" rather than "livid." Nobody sounds angry in that story, lol

Polyphia is so technical and so good and amazing and I love that Steve came in and did his own thing like "yeah, maybe you can outpace me young bucks... but can you make your guitar SING"
@rjcelmer Жыл бұрын
The best thing about Steve's playing on this track is that we all know he can shred like a mofo, but he plays very reserved and melodic which shows another side of him. They could have had him go out of his mind and give us classic Vai, but I think what we got was equally amazing.
@giannimaggio474 Жыл бұрын
I agree, but even with a calm solo he play a demoniac tecnique in the first solo part: "joint shifting". He's defintely a legend.
@rogerdaly63269 ай бұрын
I think Steve is also smart enough not to try to beat Polyphia at their own game. Served the song and didn't try to "one up" the band. Respectful & classy.

Gotta remember that we don't know what Steve's original part sounds like. Tim changed it so much that he originally didn't want his name on the track.

Just about evey guitar ive owned since '87 has been Ibanez and the "tree of life" inlay is a Steve Vai custom fret marker that was previously only on his signature JEMs but are now being used on different custom models. Hazuki from Nemophila's also has a signature model with the same inlay.

I've described a high level guitarists as being able to make the guitar speak to you. I was grossly misusing that phrase because THESE guys, THESE guys make their guitars speak. In the absence of lyrics, in the absence of flashy videography, they let their instruments do the work. Boy do they work. Instruments as extensions of their will is the best I can describe it.

Steve’s guitar inlay is the “tree of life” whereas Tim’s is the “tree of death”. The semi acoustic he plays at the beginning (my favourite guitar) is the TOD10n. I am going to learn guitar because of Ren and Polyphia (as well as a few others like Marcin, Bernth, Ichiko Nito). I won’t ever be as good as them but Iv always wanted to learn and I’m kicking my own ass to actually do it now as I’m getting far too old 😂 My 15yo son wants to learn too so he’s gonna get a bass for his birthday and me a tele style and both learn both. Some other great Polyphia tracks I think are Bloodbath ft Chino Moreno Chimera ft Lil West G.O.A.T Neurotica Some funny ones ABC ft Sophie black Look but don’t touch Also I recommend checking out Marcin. Some good ones are Carmen Habanera (on one guitar) Kashmir (on one guitar) Moonlight Sonata (on one guitar) Still D.R.E (on one guitar) Just the two of us ft Ichiko Nito

I truly appreciate how technical those 2 young fellas are. They certainly can play. My only criticism is, the shredding style does tend to lack soul. When Steve Vai entered at the end, that’s when the song had “soul”. I’m a trained classical guitarist and I can certainly play fast up and down the fretboard. But, when I play my electric guitars, I keep shredding to the minimum, because the electric guitar is such a soulful instrument. You can put so much emotion into every note you play, using vibrato and bending and trem etc. I’m a very technical musician myself, but I’ve watched a lot of polythia from 8 years to now, and i hope that they can introduce more soul in to their songs. But hey, it’s their gig.
