Now you can see why the original was number one worldwide in 1967. This version is elevated by the orchestra and the choir a masterpiece. One of the greatest songs from the 60s.

Love this song. I actually prefer the studio version from the 60's as it is the one I grew up on. This live version is very good though as it shows how powerful Gary Brooker's voice was even as he got older. "Conquistador" is another great song by Procol Harum. Sad to hear of his passing recently.

This song is absolutely beautiful and amazing! Shon, I was in college in 67 when I first heard this. I honestly didn't understand the meaning of the song either. All I know is that I felt it in my soul. And Gary Booker is was only a couple of years older than me. Then to hear this song years later with the orchestra and choir takes it to another level! And Gary's voice was just as good as ever except more seasoned. Great reaction!

He never comes to mind when I think “best classic rock singers” but I love this song and always marvel at his voice. I always watch the reaction of this song when it pops up because it’s like in his 60s he’s still trying to make me look foolish for forgetting him lol.

First vinyl I bought.. Procol Harum. I feel so old. Gary Brooker is about 63 in this rendition...he sounds better than he did then. Unfortunately, Gary passed last year. But his voice and song writing makes this song iconic

"...her face at first just ghostly, turned a whiter shade of pale." Still one of the best lines ever written. So good a line in fact, that the rest of the song was written around it. I actually prefer this over the studio version because it is simply an epic performance. Love your reactions, keep them coming! ❤

I'm glad you covered this version of the song. I discovered it myself on KZbin a few years ago. I have always loved this song even though it's from my parent's generation. I can't imagine anywhere else I would rather be than at that concert. The setting is magical and the orchestra is beautiful. Gary Brooker was at that time over 60 years old and his voice is pure gold.

Missed my bucket list wish to see them live once again (and take my daughter!)! You might get a few "easy answers" with where to go next but it's really hard to get a good handle with just a few songs. Look for "Grand Hotel", "Whaling Stories", "In Held T'was In I", "Fires (Which Burnt Brightly)", "A Salty Dog".

This performance by Procol Harum and the Bobby Hatfield performance of Unchained Melody on The Andy Williams Show are simply the two greatest music videos on KZbin, and might very well be the two best live performances ever captured on videotape. His voice puts me more in the mind of Ray Charles. If you are enjoying the Danish orchestra's music that accompanies this, may I suggest; * "The Danish National Symphony Orchestra playing *" The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly". It's the music from the movie of the same name.. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is a "Spaghetti Weatern" ( meaning it was made in Italy by and Italian director and an Italian composer who write the music). The starring actor is Clint Eastwood. He made 3 iconic western movies with this director. *Eastwood starred in several more iconic movies and is also a director himself. But do yourself and your viewers a favor and listen to The Danish Nat. Symphony Orch. play * "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly". You may recognize parts of it from other movies and tv commercials. Love your channel and your enthusiasm . Keep on doing what you're doing and I will keep watching. 👍

You may not know the technical terms or the names of instruments, but you absolutely NAIL IT! That roller-coaster feeling of the climbing to the top...building building building. and then the powerful explosion is called a crescendo. When I saw you shiver at the top of that coaster and then take the ride with that big smile on your face...you totally won me over. Always so impressed with your reactions and the way you put into words something that is an indescribable feeling...music. Much love and blessings to you and yours. XOXOXO

Gary Brooker's voice sounds as good here at 61 compared to when he was 22 when the song was originally released. It's amazing how some vocalists can maintain their voice into their 80's despite some typical range loss. There was no range loss here. Thank you Shon! You should go back to the Kinks (Lola) and react to (Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman. It's much heavier than Lola, but approximately 10-12 years after Lola with great lyrics.

In an old episode of "Have Gun, Will Travel", Paladin goes to investigate a shady bar where young men were being shanghaied. Over served and dropped down a chute through a trap door in the floor. I suppose the ceiling would fly away from that perspective. And the addition of a young virginal girlfriend the young man brought may as well be sold off to a brothel in a booming coastal town. In my young mind I always assumed that is what the song was about. And some old miller telling trying to warn them. 😂 Probably wrong, but that storyline has been in my head for decades.

Great reaction video! First time viewer here (🤔 just might have to subscribe if you do more of this quality) 👍 I have some comments, interpreting the lyrics of this song which gives it even a deeper dimension - I will share that at the end of this - (and sorry for this detailed commentary, but I think you will find it helpful if you listen to the song again and/or share it with others). Gary Brooker’s incredible singing in this live performance matched - or perhaps even exceeded - the quality of the original 1967 recording that took place 40 years earlier. And yeah, he looks and sounds a lot like Kenny Rogers, and even has the soul and passion of Ray Charles, no doubt. The band’s name comes from a couple of possible sources. One of the band members in ‘67 had a cat named Procol Harum. This is Latin for “Far beyond these things”…. Personally, I think they named the band after the cat. 😁 This song and about 3 or 4 others defined the sound and the scene that was the “Summer of Love”. Unfortunately, that beautiful era only lasted about three years…. Innocence lost - marked by another outdoor concert in December ‘69 at Altamont - The Rolling Stones - they hired the Hells Angels motorcycle gang to be their “security” force - 4 people died that night. However, great music continued to come out from the late 60s all through to the mid 90s. But 1967 through Woodstock 1969 was magic. There has been much debate/misunderstanding regarding the lyrics. I believe I can unlock the mystery for you. The lyrics are mostly metaphorical. The song is about a young couple who are attending a party perhaps at a ballroom - maybe even on a ship. They were either entertainers for the crowd, or they were just part of the crowd dancing….”We skipped the Light Fandango” but instead did cartwheels across the floor, implying that they were having a great time, perhaps even on their way to getting drunk. The room seem to be shaking apart as they “ordered another drink”, but the waiter brought a tray of many drinks. As the night wore on, the young man was fast becoming interested in having a more private intimate time with this young girl…. But yet even through her near drunkenness, she sensed it, and became frightened. As the young man shuffled through his “playing cards” - a metaphor for looking for that winning hand to convince her to go with him - she again was unable or unwilling to give into him. Even as he told her stories, and lies about himself to impress and take advantage of her she knew she was potentially headed for trouble as “The truth was plain to see”. The vestal virgin metaphor clearly implied that she was young, inexperienced, and not ready for what she feared was his ultimate intent. But he kept on with his tales and lies, and he “would not let her be”…..ramping up the pressure on her to give in. This frightened her tremendously. I have heard, but I cannot confirm, that Gary Brooker and his cowriter actually wrote two more verses, that were never recorded. We will probably never hear the end of that story. Again, I want to say your reaction video was wonderful and genuine. Well done

When titanic sailed the weather was fine and couples were dancing on the deck and first class children were doing cartwheels across the deck When it became obvious the ship was sinking the fry went out women and children. Many passengers in first ordered drinks- the waiters brought trays of incredibly expensive drinks The beautiful stain glass ceiling in the stateroom flew away when a boiler burst. -exact words of a survivor. The owner kept running round saying it’s impossible, she can’t sink, there’s no reason to this 17 vessel were launched that year and 16 made their virgin voyage to the coast of America. Great reaction, Shon. SUBSCRIBED. Honestly, the song writer (who was NOT the singer, Gary Brooker, who wrote the music for the song) denies that the song is about anything in particular. But personally? I don't buy it. There's too much description in the song that indicates a break-up between a man and a woman. And, in addition, "The Miller's Tale" (in the song the verse is "as The Miller told his tale") in the English Lit classic "The Canterbury Tales" is about infidelity where a wife sleeps with another man who isn't her husband. It's just too much of a coincidence to be a song about nothing in particular. And you picked up on it, Shon. Props to you. (In the song-writers defense, maybe he wrote about something very, very personal in the words of this song and later regretted "airing his dirty laundry" as it were and decided to just say it was a song about nothing in particular. Again, I don't buy it.)

I was thinking last week I'd love to see you react to this performance because I knew you'd love it. Another great reaction from you. Please check out Bloodywood. They're an Indian Folk Metal band from New Deli, India. Great messages in their songs, talented musicians and lyricists. You will be amazed. Check out "Aaj" by Bloodywood. It has everything in it, even a flute solo, HAHA. Yes, a flute solo in a metal song. 🤣You're gonna love it.

The studio version is more Hammond organ than piano. Listen to Salty Dog. Great song. WSP as no meaning. It's just beautiful & the melody is 100%

The female he is singing about is overdosing on heroin . The needle was on the tray the waiter brought with their drinks. He wants to help her , but she isn't wanting his help.
