Freddie Mercury is the lead singer, and it was he who wrote this masterpiece. It was ahead of its time in 1975. I can still remember the first time I heard it come on the radio, I sat down in front of it and couldn’t tear myself away. I was 16 years old then and I’d never heard anything like it before. Hello again, Sweetie! Some thoughts about Queen, and Freddy Mercury, from this old broad- for what they're worth. Freddy was taken from us all too soon, as one of the early well-known victims of the AIDS epidemic, dying on November 24th, 1991. No, the song wasn't describing his struggles with the disease, but was written in 1975 (I was 9!), long before the disease came about. He was diagnosed in 1987, and kept it secret from the public until the night before he died, not just because of the stigma attached to anyone with a diagnosis at the time, but because he had hoped a cure would be discovered before his death. Queen was one of the greatest bands of all time, in my opinion- they certainly broke down musical barriers and successfully blended an operatic style with modern rock in a way that garnered them fans which spanned a huge spectrum of musical genres. There was never the like before, and never will be their like, again. They did the soundtrack for the movie "Highlander" (1986) by the way.. a great and terrible film, and one of my personal favorites.

The genre of rock is Progressive rock, it was really a rock opera. The song is about someone who kills a man, and he gives himself over to the authorities, in the end he accepts his fate. The songs goes through the 5 stages of grieve. Bohemian Rhapsody is still one of the most popular songs, it recently received diamond status in America. Queen has a massive catalog and they had over 60 songs that made it onto the charts during Freddie Mercury's life. They did any genre of music, some Queen songs you would likely recognise is Another One Bites The Dust, I Want It All, We Are The Champions and Rock You.

I would have been heartbroken if you hadn't liked this song!! LOL. There are SO many Queen songs that are amazing. I hope you will check out many more. At some point you should check out the Live Aid concert. I KNOW you will get a ton of requests for it. But I think you should listen to a few more of their songs, first. Quieen is a group. Freddy Mercury is the lead singer. He died of Aids many years ago. (This song wasn't about that though)

Great reaction! The song is actually about Freddie coming out to his family - the death of his previous life. He didn’t want to disappoint his parents (“Didn’t mean to make you cry”), but about needing to live authentically. Queen is one of the greatest bands of all time! Absolutely incredible live. You *have* to check out their set from Live Aid! It was rated the greatest performance of all time. They weren’t even scheduled to perform until a week before, and Freddie had a throat infection & went against doctors orders to perform. Legendary!

I watched a Queen documentary recently that said that this song was about Freddie coming out as gay. The man he killed is the man everyone thought they knew. He was worried that he would lose all his fans and fame therefore believing he would be figuratively executed for killing the man they knew. Instead, we loved him even more. The studio version and the official video for it is more powerful, I believe. Also, Pentatonix does a great cover of this song. They are an a cappella group, which is a whole other rabbit hole for you to go down!

Their music always bring emotions to me and make me feel happy and relaxed. Guess I was destined to love them and be a fan too just like my parents haha Even sing their songs whenever I go Karaoke or be on stage as I sing in events 😊 They are just the best ! ❤😍

To clarify: Queen was originally a Rock band but went on to encompass many genres, largely due to Freddie's eclectic tastes. He loved music from old time r& b to gospel to ragtime to Cole Porter to show tunes to power ballads to opera. All 4 were equals & contributed greatly. Freddie attracted the most attention but always insisted he wasn't the leader; just the lead singer. There's so much to learn. You can learn a lot from Google & You Tube. Freddie 's origin story is fascinating. He had a unique early life & brought a very unusual experience & outlook to British rock music & ultimately the whole world. He truly loved the fans & performing & they loved him back.

Jordan, cry; if the music makes you cry, then cry. Let it move you wherever it takes you, you will not be alone. If anyone thinks less of you for crying, they don't get it and they are not worth listening to. (Yes, I know, it is damned hard to reach that level, but it is true nevertheless.)
