I know by now, you know that QUEEN was the name of the group with the lead singer of Freddie Mercury who died in 1991 at the age of 45. QUEEN’s songs are amazing and I hope you’ve been able to introduce Amber to this song. Seeing both of you react to these songs that have to find my life over the past 70 years - it’s like when you take a child to Disney World - you feel the same excitement as a child does seeing Disney for the first time, and I am blessed to be able to see your excitement over the music I’ve loved throughout the years!

What they don't tell you is they move your vocal cords over with a clamp, you lose your voice for 6 months, and sometimes permanently. I was lucky, I could speak normally but singing ability? Gone. I have loved Queen since a teenager - I would've agreed with "no bad Queen song" -until just recently I heard a short clip on a car commercial -- a song I had never heard, but I immediately recognized Brian's guitar - and then Freddie's vocals.. song is called "Tear it up" - and I thought "well, I don't know this one - let me look it up" -gotta say, when I listened to the "official video -with lyrics" - it was NOT good -- Brian wrote it, apparently - but the lyrics were ridiculously simple and actually.. like... what? c'mon Brian - you are a genius -?? - and even the song in total was kind of awful.. and, well... lame... I hate to admit it -- but there IS one "bad" Queen song.. at least in my estimation... lol

Freddie Mercury is the lead singer, and it was he who wrote this masterpiece. It was ahead of its time in 1975. I can still remember the first time I heard it come on the radio, I sat down in front of it and couldn’t tear myself away. I was 16 years old then and I’d never heard anything like it before. Good on you, for someone who has only ever been exposed to rap, I think it’s wonderful to see you trying to broaden your horizons. You are in for a wild ride, because rock music from the 70’s and 80’s could take you on a psychedelic trip for sure. I love Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd but Queen are my favourite, especially Freddie who was an amazing man, both personally and professionally. A creative genius, taken from us too early, and very sadly missed still to this day. Please listen to Somebody to Love at this same concert in Montreal. Freddie is considered to be the best vocalist in rock, if you watch it you’ll understand why

Hello again, Sweetie! Some thoughts about Queen, and Freddy Mercury, from this old broad- for what they're worth. Freddy was taken from us all too soon, as one of the early well-known victims of the AIDS epidemic, dying on November 24th, 1991. No, the song wasn't describing his struggles with the disease, but was written in 1975 (I was 9!), long before the disease came about. He was diagnosed in 1987, and kept it secret from the public until the night before he died, not just because of the stigma attached to anyone with a diagnosis at the time, but because he had hoped a cure would be discovered before his death. Queen was one of the greatest bands of all time, in my opinion- they certainly broke down musical barriers and successfully blended an operatic style with modern rock in a way that garnered them fans which spanned a huge spectrum of musical genres. There was never the like before, and never will be their like, again. They did the soundtrack for the movie "Highlander" (1986) by the way.. a great and terrible film, and one of my personal favorites.

Awesome reaction, it is great that you are trying different music! Queen is one of the biggest artist of all time, they are the 4th best selling artist of all time, they are British band that was created in 1970. The genre of rock is Progressive rock, it was really a rock opera. The song is about someone who kills a man, and he gives himself over to the authorities, in the end he accepts his fate. The songs goes through the 5 stages of grieve. Bohemian Rhapsody is still one of the most popular songs, it recently received diamond status in America. Queen has a massive catalog and they had over 60 songs that made it onto the charts during Freddie Mercury's life. They did any genre of music, some Queen songs you would likely recognise is Another One Bites The Dust, I Want It All, We Are The Champions and Rock You.

Great reaction! The song is actually about Freddie coming out to his family - the death of his previous life. He didn’t want to disappoint his parents (“Didn’t mean to make you cry”), but about needing to live authentically. Queen is one of the greatest bands of all time! Absolutely incredible live. You *have* to check out their set from Live Aid! It was rated the greatest performance of all time. I watched a Queen documentary recently that said that this song was about Freddie coming out as gay. The man he killed is the man everyone thought they knew. He was worried that he would lose all his fans and fame therefore believing he would be figuratively executed for killing the man they knew. Instead, we loved him even more. The studio version and the official video for it is more powerful, I believe. Also, Pentatonix does a great cover of this song. They are an a cappella group, which is a whole other rabbit hole for you to go down!

To clarify: Queen was originally a Rock band but went on to encompass many genres, largely due to Freddie's eclectic tastes. He loved music from old time r& b to gospel to ragtime to Cole Porter to show tunes to power ballads to opera. All 4 were equals & contributed greatly. Freddie attracted the most attention but always insisted he wasn't the leader; just the lead singer. There's so much to learn. You can learn a lot from Google & You Tube. Freddie 's origin story is fascinating. He had a unique early life & brought a very unusual experience & outlook to British rock music & ultimately the whole world. He truly loved the fans & performing & they loved him back.
