Randy originally wrote and recorded this in the 80’s then Carrie re-recorded it for her second album and it won them both a grammy. Randy has always said the song was better suited for her vocals than his, she definitely took the song to another level, but I love both.

Carrie performed this song on the Grand Old Opry (IIRC), and while she was finishing up Randy snuck up behind her and surprised her. It was the first time they’d met. He complemented her on her version and she was so humbled that she insisted that his was so much better. The mutual admiration was clear. This was a beautiful collaboration.

It further notes this exact performance on episode 22, which aired March 18, 2009 Carrie Underwood won the competition in Season 4 which aired in 2005, with her debut album later in 2005.

She was so excited that Randy was there, and that she got to sing his song with him. I love how he looks at her and smiles when she sings. Just like a proud Dad. She has been a beautiful gift with so many touching songs since then. She has the voice of an Angel. I love Randy. It’s heartbreaking that he was struck down by a stroke. It makes me so sad. We saw RT before his health problems at a casino in Louisiana. It was magic. You could tell that he truly appreciated us being there, and since it was a small venue, it was personal to all of us. I will always be grateful for being a part of that wonderful performance. Was only a few months later that we got the bad news.

Carrie is the finest artist to ever won AGT, male or female. There have been some good ones, but nobody comes close to her ability or talent. I also thought he sounded great when he briefly sang Hank Williams' "I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive" when he appeared on the late great George Jones show in the 1990's. Wow. I was quite familiar with the original Randy Travis version, but I'd never heard this. Carrie Underwood hit the scene at a time in my life when I was mostly living outside of the country and not really following popular American music. Thank you for showing me why she was such a sensation. But, wow. It was almost sad to hear Randy's voice starting to struggle like that. But he pulled it off, with Carrie's help. We all get old.
