Rass Kass is so underrated. Probably the best lyricist from the west coast. Some call him the West Coast Nas. He drops so much knowledge in his songs like "Nature of the Threat" where it's a REAL history lesson. And "How To Kill God" is about religion and one of the hardest songs I ever heard. Then he has just straight bangers like "Golden Child" (produced by DJ Premier). You should check all of them out. But warning ⚠️ "Nature of the Threat" and "How To Kill God" just might change your life lol

They called Ras Kass the west coast Nas when he came out. First album is a classic but The Source magazine ruined his career by giving him 3 mics out of 5 in their reviews of his first two albums. The Source held so much weight, at the time, that their reviews could make or break a career. It was during a time where West Coast artists, like Westside Connection and Ras Kass ,were coming at New York media and radio heavy for their East Coast bias and lack of support for other regions.
@KtotheG2 жыл бұрын
I thought their review was fair. It was a lackluster album with lackluster beats. They weren't too east coast-biased. Outkast received 4 1/2 mics on their debut and so did The Chronic. Snoop was mad that Doggystyle only got 4 mics, but that's because it wasn't as good as The Chronic. Lil Malik damn near had the best verse on the whole album, just like Saafir and Casual. They also gave Ice Cube 5 mics twice with Amerikka's Most Wanted and Death Certificate. Their reviews were fair. It's just that New York was most dominant in the '90s. It is what it was.
@mistahmst2 жыл бұрын
Nah they got it right. That was no 5 mic album. It could’ve been at least a 4 if it had more songs like this where the beats were as strong as his rhymes.
@soulgalacticlover72812 жыл бұрын
Not sure if it ruined his career. He definitely got radio airplay in the underground scene.
@KtotheG2 жыл бұрын
@@mistahmst Keith Murray's debut album was disappointing, too, and it was due to the production.. Everybody was looking for him to drop a classic, as well... Sometimes, the anticipation can work against an artist because people's expectations are higher than they should be. The biggest misses The Source ever had to me were with Souls of Mischief '93 Til Infinity album and Kool G Rap's Live and Let Die album. They're both 5 mic albums to me, yet they only received 3.5 mics. I know they went back and re-mic'd certain, underrated albums, but those two albums weren't included..

One of the best west coast LYRICIST. At a time when West coast rappers were not necessarily known to be lyrical… Ras Kass (as well as Kurupt from Da Doggpound) came with those RAW lyrics. Ironically they later formed a supergroup with Killah Priest (from Wu-Tang’s Sunz Of Man group) and Canibus. Two West Coast spitters and two East Coast spitters in one group (The 4 Horsemen).

Ras Kass been on that enlightenment "Woke" shit since about before 1996. His lyrics are very in depth & sophisticated. Dude reads a lot, does his research & studies books 📚 like Eminem & Tupac. His wordplay, his similes, punchlines & everything is a lot like GZA. Ras Kass is actually a lot like Royce & Em though. But he's a California Kat. Ras Kass represent Carson (C-Arson), California. Do more songs from Ras Kass. His lyrics are wildly insane! Check out Xzibit, Defari & Tha Alkaholiks too! GREAT Music. I bought the original first release copy of "Soul on Ice" back in the day. I learned about Ras watching a low budget Hollywood movie called "The Substitute" & the song "Miami Life" by Ras Kass was at the Ending Credits of that movie. I was mesmerized & intrigued by that song at the end of the movie so I bought the CD. And then not long after that, I learned about Xzibit & his "At the Speed of Life" debut album. Xzibit & Ras Kass have a couple songs together & they used to Freestyle for King Tech & Sway on the Wake up Show back in the late 90's. Xzibit & Ras Kass are 2 of some of the most skilled & talented Emcees to come out of California. Best of the Best! By the way, thought you might wanna know that Xzibit is actually a Detroit native who moved to California later. He lived in Albuquerque for a few years too but he spent most of his childhood in Detroit & his adulthood in California. You can claim him if you want to, Ahmad. LoL. He's dope though. FrFr.
