Bobby died in 2003 at age 63. He was on tour with Bill. they never went on that night in Kalamazoo MI. He died from a heat attack in his hotel room. the next morning i herd the new son the car radio on the way to work - I was a public school music teacher ...I lost it and had to pull over for minute. I grew up with this music as well a the Beatles, Motown and all that. I had almost bought tickets to that show, 50 minutes from my house, but was too busy. The boys were every influenced by African American singers, and I hear a lot of Sam Cook in this.

Unchained Melody: Bobby Hatfield live performance. The Andy Williams Show- Episode #4.5 Episode aired: Monday, Oct 25, 1965: Robert Lee Hatfield (August 10, 1940 - November 5, 2003) Bobby Hatfield, who had a higher countertenor voice to Bill Medley’s, William Thomas Medley (born September 19, 1940) baritone, sang lead on this track. It was his idea to record it, since Medley and Hatfield were each allowed to choose a song to sing as a solo vocalist on their albums. As Medley tells it, Hatfield knew the song well, and was a big fan of the Roy Hamilton and Al Hibbler versions of the song. *In Nov. 2003 Hatfield died of a heart attack at age 63. The Righteous Brothers version was a huge hit, but it was recorded with far more modest expectations. Phil Spector considered it album filler and released it as a B-side. The single had "Unchained Melody," with no producer credit on the label, as the flip to Gerry Goffin and Carole King's "Hung on You," but many DJs preferred "Unchained Melody" and played that one instead. This infuriated Spector, who subsequently left no doubt (actually calling DJs telling them to play “Hung On You” not “Unchained Melody “)as to which side of a Philles single was the A-side. * The famous climax of this song where Bobby Hatfield sings the high "I need your love" line wasn't how the song was written. In an interview with Bill Medley, he explained that Hatfield did two takes of the song, then left. He would often reconsider his performance and come back later to change it, and that's what he did on this track, returning to ask Medley if he could make an edit. This was no easy task, since with a maximum of four tracks to work with, you had to record over part of the original take, but Medley accommodated and Hatfield delivered that soaring vocal line. Said Medley: "I punched that in and before he left he said, 'No, I can do it better. ’And I said, 'No, you can't.' [Laughs] And I think it's a big part of that song." * This was released on Philles Records, Phil Spector's label. Spector, known for his "Wall Of Sound" technique, did not produce this - Bill Medley did. In a 2007 statement to the Forgotten Hits newsletter, Medley said: "You have to remember that I was producing our stuff before Phil Spector... I mean I produced 'Little Latin Lupe Lu,' 'My Babe' and all that stuff. Then when we went with Phil, Phil asked me if I would produce the albums because it was too time consuming for him to produce the entire albums. So he was going to do the singles and I would do the album. And so that's how that happened and that's how I produced 'Unchained Melody,' which Phil Spector apparently now takes credit for. He can have the credit. And I'm not a producer. I know how to produce. But it's obviously not a Spector production. 'Unchained Melody' was never intended to be the single... it was produced to be on the album. It was put on the B side of a Phil Spector single 'Hung On You' and the minute it was released 'Unchained Melody' just went through the roof." Hatfield’s rendition of “Unchained Melody” although not the original, is the ‘gold standard’. Thank you for a great reaction. That was Bobby Hatfield. The late great. Half of The Righteous Brothers. This song was written about a man in prison, singing to his girl. Bobby's rendition of it has gone down as the best by far. He sang it live, no voice manipulation whatsoever. He had a perfect voice. In 1967, the live orchestra was behind him and these songs were sung with "Phil Spector's Wall of Sound" as accompaniment. If you listen again, and focus on just the orchestra, it's breathtaking. Also Bobby was extra nervous because his momma was in the audience and he also had a cold. I was just a very little kid in 1967, but I remember hearing this on my transistor radio. Another great oldie to react to, is Tom Jones " I Who Have Nothing", and Tom Jone's. " I Will Never Fall in Love Again". Thanks Again

Phil Specter's wall of sound referred to how he used instruments & production in the recording studio. But, he had absolutely nothing to do with this song. Bill Medley produced the record. Anything that was to only be an album track was produced by Bill at that time. Only songs to be released as a singles were produced by Spector. Bobby said Unchained Melody wasn't busy like the wall of sound, and he thought that's why DJs liked it. For some inexplicable reason Spector put it on the B-side of Hung on You. He would put what he considered throw away songs on B-sides. After it became a hit, Spector claimed credit for it, even though previously he tried to get DJs to stop playing it and play his A-side. However, it doesn't matter who produced the studio recording because it has nothing to do with this rendition. Bobby liked the acoustics of the theater and consulted with the Andy Williams show's orchestra conductor and arranger to take advantage of it. It was October 25, 1965.

You have to watch carefully, but Bobby flashes a little smile right at the end. He knew he had nailed it. You should listen to "Lovin' Feeling" where both Righteous Brothers sing. That song is ranked as radio's most requested and played song of the 20th century. Bobby's partner, Bill Medley, is still going strong, touring and giving concerts. Bill and Jennifer Warnes had a number 1 hit in 1987 with "Time of My Life", from the movie "Dirty Dancing."

Old school fans young & old tend to be loyal fans & enjoy others understanding & realizing why we got spoiled on pure, raw talent. This duo is on. 🔥"Stay With Me Baby" is another record solo by Bobby that highlights his amazing vocal range done with ease. Bill Medley had a solo record called "Brown Eyed Woman". See him perform it with the talented Blossoms on a TV show called "Playboy After Dark". He felt the song as he glances back towards one of the Blossoms who was extra special to him at the time. They had wonderful long lasting marriages to others but still remain friends.

I remember when the Righteous Brothers were being played on the radio. Most all of us, having not yet seen them, assumed they were black men. Then, when they were seen more, we could not believe white men could sound like that. After a while, their music was known as "blue eyed soul". No voice like Bobby Hatfield's before or since. May he rest in peace. He died way too soon, in 2003. The voice lives on. Your reaction was excellent. Thank you.
