This song really captures the grief that overwhelms Shadow for all those who have died because of his mere existence, particularly the people closest to him in Prof. Gerald and Maria. The version of All Hail Shadow you remember hearing before may in fact be the Crush 40 cover 👀 it’s essentially recognized as the default version of the song today - both by fans and the devs themselves - and many don’t even know of the Magna-Fi original as a result. But as someone who prefers the original for reasons you pointed out (the harmony, certain chords, the solo that make my ear go brrrr), I’m glad to see it get some appreciation :)

Not sure if you noticed it, but the piano segment in the beginning of Never Turn Back is a piano cover of "I Am... All Of Me". Blew my mind when I learned that, and it was so poignant hearing that at the credits screen of the game!

There are actually a couple more vocal themes sort of from this game, but they went unused, those being "Broken" (the original Neutral-Hero ending song, by Sins of a Divine Mother; it was replaced by Chosen One last minute because no one could get into contact with the singer to get permission to use the song in-game) and "Who I Am" (the original main theme, by Magni-Fi; they made it without Jun because they didn't know he wanted to be involved, so it got shelved). There's also been some speculation over the years if the song "All Of Me" (which is also by Sins of a Divine Mother) was going to be used, with one member of the band claiming it was and another claiming it wasn't; if it was intended to be used I'm guessing it probably would've been the Neutral-Dark ending theme, and that it was probably dropped for the same reason as Broken (and also because it has a swear in it but I'm sure a clean version would've been recorded if it made the cut; Sega did just that for His World in Sonic 06 and Vandalize in Sonic Frontiers)

Fun fact that is pretty well known nowadays, "Almost dead" was also the credits song for the movie "Rave of the dead" which explains its vocals being a bit more edgy then even the rest of the ost. Another not-so fun fact is that its the only vocal track from the game that isn't on spotify or in Shadow Generations.

The Ark is probably my favorite level theme from Shadow. Its a groovy disco/funk reimagining of Highway in the Sky from Sonic Adventure 2, which played in Sonic's final level, Final Rush. It almost seems the composers were peeking over at Hideki Naganuma's work on Sonic Rush (which came out the same year) and evoking his style. Very cool composer to give listen to himself, incredibly unique and fun style.

In SA2 Jun's Shadow themes were more metal like Mr Unsmiley, and Radical Highway. The techno Shadow oriented tunes were by Fumie Kumatani, like The Supernatural, For True Story, Rhythm and Balance, Supporting Me, and Throw it all Away. What's crazy is that Fumie also wrote the Rouge themes which obviously, being so jazzy, was a completely different style. She is an amazing composer.

Funny that you associated Circus Park with Billy Hatcher because the composer for that track was Mariko Nanba, she’s been doing music for sonic since Chaotix up until Colors and she also made the ost for Billy alongside Ohtani. Edit: Forgot to add, but speaking of Ohtani, he also made two tracks for this game, Black Comet and The ARK, I recommend listening to them, doesn’t have to be for a video, because they are super dope.

10:40 this is easily my favorite theme, the Neutral Hero theme- Chosen One is such a somber song. like Shadow is a hero- but he’s reluctant at the same time because of his past and wanting to avenge/fulfill something that he can’t put away, with Maria’s promise/wish. Thanks for this Bapple. I’ve been blaring this ost and some other sonic songs after watching the Sonic 3 film. Such an awesome thing to see my childhood obsession in Sonic-getting his own trilogy. Wish you also would've listened to one of the songs made for the game that didn't make it into the game. "Who I Am" by Magna-Fi, same band that did All Hail Shadow. It was supposed to be the intro theme and final boss theme, but thanks to licensing issues didn't make it in, so Crush 40 made "I Am All of Me" last second. I personally prefer "Who I Am", it fits the game much more and the lyrics describe Shadow's relation to Black Doom and I think the song itself is just better. Check it out!

Usually outside of the intro music, and end credits, the rest of soundtrack comes down to not for me type of music rather then subjectively thinking it’s not the best. I do genuinely remembered most of these songs. It’s a super product of the era, and very different for Sonic game standards like the game itself. Lol Granted it all fits Shadows’s character, and overall tone anyways. Plus it’s not far off from his solo tracks from other games before it. This is one of those games where the soundtrack is all a game had going for. I think any early 3D games had peak level diversity music. I hope you listened to Sonic Unleashed if you haven’t yet! I really enjoy hearing your opinion description.

I feel like we've reached an interesting and refreshing time period where a lot of people are finally admitting this game was cool as hell. The soundtrack has always been praised, but people freaking out in a positive way over Shadow having a gun in the movie was really validating to me. This game had it's issues but it was actually way more polished than Heroes was, and I reminded myself of that quite thoroughly watching my fiancee play them back to back in preparation for the Sonic Symphony. Shadow ended up being her favorite Sonic game, likely right under Frontiers, just like me. We still have to play Shadow Generations together though. We're excited, although she's still going through and being blown away by Frontiers.

Super recommend you check out "Who I Am" by Magna-Fi, "Broken" and "All of Me," both by Sins of a Divine Mother (who then after became Mona Lisa Overdrive). AFAIK, they're cut tracks from the game's development, I.E. "Who I Am" would have been the main theme, "Broken" would have been the semi-hero ending. Not sure where All of Me was gonna go tho. This game gets shat on alot but Shadow the Hedgehog is one of my favourite games, not just Sonic games but video games in general and the music is one of the main factors for that. When I got this back in 2006 it was all I played for months, sometimes I would put it on just to listen to the music. Chosen One is without a doubt my favourite song, the lyrics, the rhythm and the overall feeling to me just fits Shadow. That song is a big part of why he's one of my favourite video game characters.
