Oh, wow JaVaughn - Steve Winwood is a deep, deep rabbit hole. He’s had that voice since he was 15. Had a bunch of hits as part of the Spencer Davis Group in the 60s / 70s. The had mega hits as a solo artist in the 80s. This was one of his best in the 80s although there are MANY other songs from his 80s resurgence. That’s Chaka Khan singing backup. Btw, recently a cover of this song by Whitney Houston was released. From the 80s try Valerie, Don’t You Know What The Night Can Do, While You See a Chance. From Spencer Davis Group try Gimme Some Lovin.

Earlier he was a member of numerous notable bands including The Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith, Traffic, Ginger Baker’s Air Force, Eric Clapton and the Powerhouse. Those were the key ones.

You react to Chaka Khan a few weeks back. She slays. Stevie Winwood joined the Spencer Davis Group at 14. They had a number 1 record when he was 16 or 17. Then he was in the amazing band Traffic. And the short-lived, super group, Blind Faith. He launched a successful solo career in the late 70’s. And is one of a few male rock singers that still has a good voice very late in his career. So talented, and a notable influence on popular music for decades.

Love, love, love Steve Winwood. He has such a distinctive voice. I saw him 2x with Traffic & solo in S.F. about 10 years ago. He still sounds great. Check out the 2 videos from about 8 years ago with just he & his guitar by the fire. He has been around since he was 14 or 15, first with the Spencer Davis group, then Blind Faith with Eric Clapton, followed by Traffic. P.S. That woman in the video is Chaka Khan.

Steve Winwood had this 'soul' in his voice from a teenager which is for white guy very extraordinary, The thing that he pulled out 'Gimme your lovin' at age of about 17 is ridicilous. Together him and Chaka Chan souded phenomenal as they both have this a bit craspy but high pitch in this song and the funny thing is that this is more like gospelpsong and not as a pop song. AND YES I AM PALE AS A ICECREAM:P.. BUT WHO GIVES A *

Steve Winwood is a British music legend. He started out with the Spencer Davis Group, went on to be a member of another major British group Traffic, then was in the supergroup Blind Faith with Eric Clapton, before going on to a major career as a solo artist in the 70s and 80s. It's also an interesting fun fact that Steve's brother Muff Winwood is a successful record producer who discovered and produced Dire Straits.

The funny thing is, nearly no one who wasn't around back in the '80s likely really knows much about Steve Winwood. But his discography is INSANE -- from groups he was in to songs he wrote through to music sessions he played on. His net worth conveys just how DEEPLY he affected music in the '70s and '80s -- he's 72 now and worth over $60 million. His discography, and this is not detailed/extensive: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Winwood#Discography

The drum intro you hear in the beginning was done on a drum machine. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Winwood - At 8 years old, he first performed with his father and elder brother Muff in the Ron Atkinson Band. Muff later recalled that when Steve began playing regularly with them in licensed pubs and clubs, the piano had to be turned with its back to the audience to try and hide him, because he was so obviously underage. ... While still a pupil at Great Barr School, Winwood was a part of the Birmingham rhythm and blues scene, playing the Hammond C-3 organ and guitar, backing blues singers such as Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, T-Bone Walker, Howlin' Wolf, B.B. King, Sonny Boy Williamson II, Eddie Boyd, Otis Spann, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley on their United Kingdom tours, the custom at that time being for US singers to travel solo and be backed by pick-up bands. At this time, Winwood was living on Atlantic Road in Great Barr, close to the Birmingham music halls where he played. Winwood modeled his singing after Ray Charles. // The Spencer Davis Group: At age 14, Winwood (then known as "Stevie" Winwood) joined the Spencer Davis Group along with older brother Muff, who later had success as a record producer, after Davis saw them performing as the Muffy Wood Jazz Band at a Birmingham pub called the Golden Eagle. The group made their debut at the Eagle and subsequently had a Monday-night residency there. Winwood's distinctive high tenor singing voice and vocal style drew comparisons to Ray Charles. // In 1964, they signed their first recording contract with Island Records. Producer and founder Chris Blackwell later said of Winwood "He was really the cornerstone of Island Records. He's a musical genius and because he was with Island all the other talent really wanted to be with Island." The group's first record, a single, was released 10 days after Winwood's 16th birthday. The group had their first number-one single at the end of 1965, with "Keep on Running"; the money from this success allowed Winwood to buy his own Hammond organ. Winwood co-wrote and recorded the chart-topping hits "Gimme Some Lovin'" and "I'm a Man" before leaving The Spencer Davis Group in 1967.

I remember dancing to this, I love it and his voice is brilliant. I have always loved his voice and I can't remember what band or bands he was with but I know his voice is one I haven't forgot. You love music and I think the 80's are one of your favourite decades, I like some 90's but the earlier decades touch my heart more. I love the way you chuckle and give your thoughts on what you have heard, honesty is what you give us and that's one of the things that keeps me coming back. On bad days of pain for me you lift my spirits and make me happy, thank you for that Jayvee as I I like being happy and positive. God bless you, love hugs and peace Mary-Ellen UK
