All in all, “Edge of Seventeen” is about the sadness Nicks felt after the death of her musical hero John Lennon and an uncle of hers named Jonathan. Both deaths occurred just days apart in the month of December 1980. Nicks got the song’s title from a conversation she had with singer Tom Petty’s wife Jane Benyo. During the conversation, Nicks had asked Jane when she met Tom for the first time. Jane replied Nicks by telling her that she and Tom met when she was “at the age of seventeen”. Interestingly, because of Jane’s southern accent (which was very thick), Nicks assumed what Jane said was “the edge of seventeen”. She liked the phrase and decided instantly it would make a good title for a song. In 2019, Stevie Nicks made history by becoming the first female artist inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice 52

Nicks spoke about the "white-winged dove" and what this song means to her: "It became a song about violent death, which was very scary to me because at that point no one in my family had died. To me, the white-winged dove was for John Lennon the dove of peace, and for my uncle it was the white-winged dove who lives in the saguaro cactus - that's how I found out about the white-winged dove, and it does make a sound like whooo, whooo, whooo. I read that somewhere in Phoenix and thought I would use that in this song. The dove became exciting and sad and tragic and incredibly dramatic. I think the song has a lot of poignancy for so many of us, especially over the last few years. From cancer, covid, mass shootings & the sheer number of lives lost around the world this weekend alone - we've all lost family & friends. Death is very rarely not violent & I think Stevie captured the feelings of someone left behind in a raw & powerful way. The fact she always ends her concerts with it also shows how the events have stayed with her, as they do with us all.

This reaction knocked me back 40 years. In 1981, I was in the US Navy and my submarine popped up in Australia after spending a few months underwater. Stevie Nicks “Bella Donna” album had just came out in Australia and that was the first time I heard any songs from it. Now any song from that album makes me think of being 21 years old in Australia.

When Stevie Nick's notes she was all alone standing in the hall ... and the tears were not heard at all ... and a Nightbird makes the call.. .. was reference to when she went back home in Phoenix to visit her favorite Uncle in hospital, but when she arrived (in real life) he died right there in front of her .... And she was in shock since his family wasn't there ... and the doctors & nurses weren't there on the spot... she was left standing in the hall all alone looking for anyone to help.. but the Night bird took him away... John Lennon died days before her favorite Uncle and she wrote the song for both of them.. She was devastated & inspired at time of writing this song ... but it sounds like a teenage love song too ... she is mystical masterful in her writing... I believe she said she put that small piece of real life in this song then wrote all around it to finish it to make it complete.... Most fans think the whole song is about their personal event but sometimes it's just a small part in the song..

John was 24 when she first "laid eyes on him" on the Ed Sullivan show. He seemed broken heated (most of his songs were lamenting over love). And at the airing of that night (Feb 1964), Stevie was 16 and wouldn't turn 17 until May. The music was hauntingly familiar and he had the words of a poet and the voice of a choir. The part towards the end about her running down the hall, she woke up to the news John had been murdered on NYC, but no one was around to consol her or help her "find the answers." Unfortunately, Stevie never met John Lennon, which is one of her biggest regrets. She is a true poet, legend and rock and roll royalty. An amazing woman.

This song was written by Stevie Nicks over a three month period it started with the death of John Lennon. Stevie did not know Lennon but says her producer Jimmy Iovine was devastated as he was close with a John Lennon. She went home to Arizona and her uncle was dying of cancer and she and her cousin were home alone with him when he passed away early in the evening . That’s where I went running down the hall in flood of tears . It’s a very deep and very personal song she penned. She is a goddamn legend.
