Eric Clapton said that SRV didn't play the music, he channeled it. I had the privilege to watch him play live in Austin back in the day, before he became a household name, and I'd never heard before, nor have I heard since anybody deliver with the accuracy and intensity SRV did. The guy was awesome!

RIP Stevie Ray Vaugh, one of the most phenomenal guitarists ever. He is widely respected in the guitar world and considered to be one of its finest. Your ears do not deceive you, and I feel you were spot on with your description that the instrument was an extension of him. He spoke through his guitar more so than any lyrics he sang.

Died in 1990 at 35 from a plane crash, a few years after he got sober. One of the biggest losses in music history. In my mind, the greatest guitarist alongside Hendrix. Reactions to his live performances specifically are my favorite (and even convinced me to buy & learn the guitar years ago) because of how intense & different they are each time. He was one of those rare artists that seemed larger than life & were always extremely humble with their fame. Definitely recommend "Life Without You - 9/21/1985 - Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ" or Little Wing live @ the El Mocambo, two of my favorite performances of his.

Your instincts are correct, he's considered one of the all-time greats by virtually everyone. Where he ranks specifically is obviously open to subjectivity, but most everyone has him near the top. I like that you said his guitar is just like an extension of his body, because that's what I've been saying since I discovered him decades ago. I mean literally, that's how I've always described his playing.

He covered Jimi Hendrix, There is a video of him and his brother Jimmy playing a double necked guitar at the same time that shows just how good he is that will blow your mind....he would break strings and switch out guitars without missing a lick.He was a top tier master.

He was able to beat a lifelong addiction to alcohol and drugs, he was instrumental in helping other prominent artists including his brother and his band mates get clean. Don’t get me wrong, the El Mocambo version is a VERY good one to react to, but I love when reactors pick this one. Mostly because I love the added musicians…including Stevie’s own brother, Jimmy (in the sequined jacket playing while Stevie swapped guitars after a broken string). Btw, he passed in Aug 1990 in a helicopter crash after performing in Wisconsin…Eric Clapton also performed but was in another helicopter. They were headed back to Chicago, I believe, to hop in a plane back home. He had just cleaned up a couple years prior, too, and was at the top of his game! Edit: oh yeah, Texas blues, btw. 🤙🏼😜 Edit 2: SOOOOO much out there but probably another top one would be Voodoo Child (live at the El Mocambo). I’d also recommend Couln’t Stand the Weather at The Capitol 9/21/1985

Fun fact about Stevie's guitar playing: His songs are frequently written in keys that not a lot of guitarists used because he kept his guitar tuned down one full semitone (Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Bb, Eb versus the normal E, A, D, G, B, E). This because he had to use extra-heavy gauged strings to support his heavy-handedness while playing, and he still frequently broke strings while playing.
