This song was written after the Tiananmen Square protest. the first lines are addressing the way media portrays protesters, disregarding their efforts to stand against injustice. (something still prevalent nowadays.) when the reality is, those young people were there to stand up for what they believe in. some words from Daron about the song, “I see us as a socially-conscious band, not just a political band, the guy sitting in his car, waiting for his girl, with the world going on around him.. it comes down to that. That’s what System of a Down means to me.” and that lyric is so important today. mere waiting won’t result in her arrival. it’s a true call to activism. and the way it’s repeated i feel showcases how no change is being made in the world by simply sitting around, it’s important to stand, acknowledge what’s right and wrong instead of trying not to ‘pick sides’. the song also addresses how governments and media placate people via propaganda, using it to keep them focused so they can maintain control, a topic that System often covers.

For English class we had to find a song that had a deeper message, so i chose this song and my teacher said it didnt have a deeper meaning, and that they said Tiananmen square once, but nothing about it. So i got a bad grade lol

It was written about the protest. Saying it was written after the protest, implies it was written in 1989, which is not correct.
