That sound that drew your attention is an ultra-clean guitar tone (no effects) played in a rockabilly style by Elliot Easton. It's amazing because this song is loaded with musical tropes dating back to the 50s, from the chord progression, to the guitar line underlying the verses, and even Ric Ocasek's "hiccup" style is evocative of Buddy Holly. Yet even today, more than 40 years after it was recorded, it sounds ultra modern. I would go with the song "Magic" next, for a totally different vibe. -JR in Miami

Totally agree! There are a lot of 50's throwback styles and techniques in this song. But mingled into the new-wave sound of that time. In the 80's, I remember there was a 50's nostalgia kick going on and you saw this echoed in many of the songs of the day.

The Cars were a Boston-based music group that had their greatest success in the late-1970s and into the mid-1980s. They classified themselves as a "New Wave band". Some New Wave bands and solo artists of that time incorporated the "hiccup" technique as part of their singing style. It was inspired by the singing style of Buddy Holly on some of his songs during the 1950s. Ric Ocasek was the lead singer on this and other songs by the group, but bass player/keyboard player Benjamin Orr also sang lead vocals on some of the group's songs. Benjamin Orr died of pancreatic cancer in 2000, at the age of 53. Ric Ocasek died in 2019 while recovering at home from heart surgery, at the age 0f 75. The Cars are inductees in The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

Forget their 80s pop hits for now. The Cars are among the originators of New Wave (some say the Fathers of New Wave, and I wouldn't disagree) in the 70s. Explore their first 2 or 3 albums first (the one you just did is from their first, and still best album). I would suggest Bye Bye Love" or "All Mixed Up" from the same album. Or if you want quirkier, try "I'm in Touch with your World" or "Moving in Stereo" (or you could do Moving in Stereo immediately followed by All Mixed Up, since the end of one begins the other on the album). If you want some quirky fast paced new wave techno rock, try "Candy-O" from their second album of the same name.

The Cars' "Heartbeat City" concert tour was the first live show that I ever attended without my parents. Obviously, I've been a fan for decades. "Let's Go" is a classic, as is "Good Times Roll", "Shake It Up", and "Magic". However, for your next one, I would recommend "Drive", as it's one of the few Cars hits where the lead vocals are sung by the bassist, Benjamin Orr, and not by Ric Ocasek. It's a truly beautiful, haunting song, and one of the best songs of the 80s.

Wasn't the 80's a lot more fun ? I mean in general, people just didn't take everything as so serious. The Cars have many great hits, and most are the " boy meets girl " type. I love the bass lines !

When I listen to Cars songs I appreciate how absolutely perfect every aspect of the song is. The instruments and vocals just interact seemlessly.

This was the first Cars song I heard, and I was hooked on them forever, this is probably my favorite bands. So many great songs from the Cars (Bye Bye Love, You are the girl, Gimme some Slack, great guitar solo in Tonight She Comes) just to name a few.

The first of many NEW WAVE bands, the CARS with Ric Ocasek's quirky voice... catchy keyboards...and creative guitar work made them the most popular party band of the late 70's/early 80's!
