That sound that drew your attention is an ultra-clean guitar tone (no effects) played in a rockabilly style by Elliot Easton. It's amazing because this song is loaded with musical tropes dating back to the 50s, from the chord progression, to the guitar line underlying the verses, and even Ric Ocasek's "hiccup" style is evocative of Buddy Holly. Yet even today, more than 40 years after it was recorded, it sounds ultra modern. I would go with the song "Magic" next, for a totally different vibe. -JR in Miami

Totally agree! There are a lot of 50's throwback styles and techniques in this song. But mingled into the new-wave sound of that time. In the 80's, I remember there was a 50's nostalgia kick going on and you saw this echoed in many of the songs of the day.

The Cars were a Boston-based music group that had their greatest success in the late-1970s and into the mid-1980s. They classified themselves as a "New Wave band". Some New Wave bands and solo artists of that time incorporated the "hiccup" technique as part of their singing style. It was inspired by the singing style of Buddy Holly on some of his songs during the 1950s. Ric Ocasek was the lead singer on this and other songs by the group, but bass player/keyboard player Benjamin Orr also sang lead vocals on some of the group's songs. Benjamin Orr died of pancreatic cancer in 2000, at the age of 53. Ric Ocasek died in 2019 while recovering at home from heart surgery, at the age 0f 75. The Cars are inductees in The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

RIP the brilliant and inimitable Ric Ocasek, the band's lead songwriter and co-lead vocalist. They are such a tight, melodic, and fun band. I never get tired of listening to them. As someone else noted, Elliot Easton's guitar is sublime. So melodic and catchy it sounds easy, but it's not. He's a Berkley School of Music grad who hooked up with the a great group of guys from Boston. "Just What I Needed" "Drive" "You're all I've Got Tonight" are just a few of my faves.

I love Ric Ocasek’s style and his voice is so unique! This is the opposite of Jessie’s Girl! His singing style in this song reminds me a little of Buddy Holly’s voice in his songs Peggy Sue or Rave On! The Cars were one of the eighties best bands! RIP Ric!❤️❤️

Elliot Easton is on my top 10 list of favorite guitarists. His solos are awesome, but I feel like no two follow the same pattern or sound exactly the same. The more Cars you dip into, the more you will see for yourself. Some are poppy, some are kinda nasty. He's totally under rated.

Not a bad song on this album, almost all were top hits for a debut album too. I got all their albums on original vinyl LPs sealed up and played every so often. I saw them 3x in concert and they always put on a great show. Great reaction, guys. "Candy-O" and "Let's Go" were a couple of my early favs.

You may have noticed the Queen-like back-up vocals on this song. That's because both bands had the same producer in Roy Thomas Baker who was one the most innovative producers ever and the first to use 40 track recording.

I was 11 years old and totally blown away by The Cars when this song and the album "The Cars" came out! The whole album is great, as is their second album "Candy-O". You should hit the song "Candy-O" next from this album! It sounds futuristic, hypnotic and rocks hard! The album cover is pretty awesome, too! 😎 They have many other great songs on their other albums, but if you ever do a whole album review, please react to these two first. You won't regret it! Some of the songs on each album flow into the next, which adds to the experience. Their sound was so unique and I can remember feeling lucky to experience the birth of a cool new music genre called New Wave. Blondie, Devo, Talking Heads, and the B-52's are some other great acts in the same genre.

Exacta Mundo! I'm about the same age and 100% agree! I loved the synthesizer/New Wave sound coming out then - Devo and BLONDIE of course, but the B-52's are from Athens, G-A! And growing up in Metro Atlanta, that was a pretty BFD! AAAAAH! It was a great time to be alive if you loved music!

Forget their 80s pop hits for now. The Cars are among the originators of New Wave (some say the Fathers of New Wave, and I wouldn't disagree) in the 70s. Explore their first 2 or 3 albums first (the one you just did is from their first, and still best album). I would suggest Bye Bye Love" or "All Mixed Up" from the same album. Or if you want quirkier, try "I'm in Touch with your World" or "Moving in Stereo" (or you could do Moving in Stereo immediately followed by All Mixed Up, since the end of one begins the other on the album). If you want some quirky fast paced new wave techno rock, try "Candy-O" from their second album of the same name.

The Cars' "Heartbeat City" concert tour was the first live show that I ever attended without my parents. Obviously, I've been a fan for decades. "Let's Go" is a classic, as is "Good Times Roll", "Shake It Up", and "Magic". However, for your next one, I would recommend "Drive", as it's one of the few Cars hits where the lead vocals are sung by the bassist, Benjamin Orr, and not by Ric Ocasek. It's a truly beautiful, haunting song, and one of the best songs of the 80s.

Wasn't the 80's a lot more fun ? I mean in general, people just didn't take everything as so serious. The Cars have many great hits, and most are the " boy meets girl " type. I love the bass lines !
