Some of her vocal technique is based on a traditional Gaelic Celtic form called "keening", found in Ireland and Scotland. It is associated with mourning, and was used in the formal Irish funeral ritual. Very fitting in this context...

The song is about the long-running conflict in Northern Ireland. As she sings in the song, "It's the same old theme, since 1916". In 1916, militant republicans tried to force independence from Greater Britain. But the conflict actually goes back to the 12th century. Two other absolutely recommendable songs are: Linger and Ode To My Family.

They were wrong in their tactics but Great Britain terrorized the Irish and Scottish for hundreds of years, stealing their resources, raping their women and murdering their men who tried any form of resistance. So try telling the whole story it didn’t start in 1916.

I don't think a lot of people realize that the conflict had been ongoing for 700 years. This song pointed a bright light at it and brought the violence to an end. Relations are still strained, but there haven't been any reports of significant violence since. Oliver Cromwell started it, Delores ended it.

This song was written after the lead, Doloris O' Riordan, saw a report of a bombing in Ireland by the IRA (Irish Republican Army, a separatist group for Irish independence) in which two young boys were killed by the bomb that was placed inside a public garbage can that they were near when it detonated...sadly, Doloris herself passed away in January of 2018, the next day she was supposed to collaborate with the band Bad Wolves on their cover of Zombie, but she was found dead in her hotel room...Bad Wolves released the song in tribute and donated all the proceeds to her family...Rest in Power Dee!

Such a powerful anti-war song. I remember a time when the Irish Republican Army (IRA) was bombing civilians - it was kind of scary if you wanted to visit Ireland, especially Northern Ireland, for a long time. They killed about 1800 people, 600 civilians. Another snapshot of history that isn't discussed much in the US. Worth reading up a little about it. Thanks for the reaction!

With all due respect, the history of “The Troubles” is far more complicated than a simple matter of some sort of unprovoked, unilateral, unchecked aggression carried out solely by the IRA. Violence and terror were perpetrated against innocent people from all “sides”.

It's heart-warming to see such reactions, so many years later, and how such a masterpiece can carry a message over several generations. At the time this song was written, I was barely a teenager and I was only just starting English at school, so I couldn't understand a word of it. I remember part of the program was exchanging "snail-mail" with foreign students from somewhere in England. The Northern Ireland conflict had been on the news for as long as I could remember, but I honestly didn't connect the dots at the time. Only several years later did I find out the background of the song : one of the boys that were killed in the bombing that triggered it was only 12. When I learned this, I couldn't help thinking that he could very well have been the one I was in contact with. I never knew for sure but it doesn't really matter : this is when the song stopped being just a profound song to me, interpreted by an immense voice. This is when it finally touched me at the core, and stayed there ever since.

I was a teen in the 80s when this topic was in the news all the time. Even with that most Americans (me included) were pretty unaware. This song really raised awareness a ton. You can see that she's a talented musician too, playing and singing lead. You'll see when you get around to itz but she coukd really croon too. A bunch of young, female singers have copied her style in recent years, even throwing in a fake Irish accent.

IRA Irish Republic Army. So much terror right where they lived and death, in both Ireland and England. Religious wars are devastating to the citizens of the country. This went on for years between Catholics and Protestants. You'll find it throughout history. It's what brought about The Crusades. The song The Crusader by Chris De' Burgh always comes to mind. I imagine it's here on KZbin.

I'm from Northern Ireland and every time this song gets reacted to people who aren't even from the island of Ireland talk bullshit about what they don't know. The protestants and Catholics weren't at war. The ira wanted a united Ireland and the loyalist groups wanted to stay in the UK. It got out of control and innocent people were getting killed by both paramilitary groups, both of which were criminal scum. A vast majority of both catholic and protestant people lived together but as usual the media blew it all out of proportion. There were areas where either religions couldn't go into but they were few and far between. It was a very complicated situation but was not a war between protestants and Catholics.

Love your reactions man and how you genuinely try to understand the meaning behind these songs. This song is about the Bloody Sunday massacre in Ireland by British soldiers. It sparked decades of violence and uprisings by the Irish Republican Army (IRA). I’m 49 years old and American but I can remember the violence reported weekly in the 80s. Tough times for those folks. It’s not specifically about Bloody Sunday more the mindset “zombie” on both sides that took hold from that terrible massacre, and the 1916 uprising, and the historical bad treatment by the British ruling class. It is specifically about the IRA bombs on the UK mainland tho which killed children and the shame she felt for their deaths “ it’s not me it’s not my family”. You’re so right about tough times during those days tho it’s hard to comprehend now and let’s hope the peace stays forever

It's not about Bloody Sunday. It was inspired by the deaths of two children in an IRA bombing in Warrington in 1993, the latest of hundreds of bombings by the IRA over twenty-odd years. She sings 'But you see, it's not me, It's not my family'; she's distancing herself, her family and the vast majority of Irish citizens from the criminal, murderous acts of the IRA and their tiny minority of supporters who had been causing unrest since 1916. She was disowning their actions as were majority. It wasn't much later that the Good Friday Agreement came about in 1998, because the Irish on both sides were sick of the Troubles conducted by two sets of unhinged murderous lunatics.

Its inspired by the Warrington bombings not Bloody Sunday but I can see how you would think that. She was on tour when the news broke two children had been killed by the bombing, the line 'it's not me, it's not my family' - is like saying 'not in my name'. Sunday Bloody Sunday by U2 is about Bloody Sunday.
