The "guitar" you're referring to, Amber, is actually a *sitar,* an Indian string instrument originally popularized by Ravi Shankar (Fun Fact: One of his daughters was Norah Jones), and first used in a Western Pop song, "Norwegian Wood" by The Beatles in 1965. It quickly became one of the main instruments used in Psychedelic Rock/Pop, with The Grass Roots using it in this, their very first hit song in 1967 (the year in which I was born, btw). Great, memorable song.

The Grass Roots were a band created by a couple of songwriters at Dunhill Records and charted hits between 1965 to 1976. They had a unique folk-rock sound but also featured two lead vocalists. A lot of the actual recordings of the instrumentation is credited to the Wrecking Crew, an elite collection of studio musicians that were behind most of the LA area recordings in those years. My favorites (in order of my personal preference): "Midnight Confessions" "Let's Live for Today" "Temptation Eyes" "Sooner or Later" "I'd Wait a Million Years" "Where Were You When I Needed You" "Two Divided by Love"

Midnight Confessions" and "Temptation Eyes" are probably my 2 favorites by The Grass Roots, who were from L.A.. You should also check out 'Lady Willpower" "Young Girl" and "Woman, Woman" by Gary Puckett and the Union Gap who were from San Diego, also in the sixties. Another group I loved from that era was Paul Revere and the Raiders. I think "Kicks" was their most popular song, but I loved "Wednesday's Child" and "Indian Reservation" sometimes called "Cherokee People".

You'll hear other recommendations for Grass Roots songs, and among them will be "Midnight Confessions," which may have been their biggest hit (if "Let's Live for Today" wasn't). But not as many will remember their first hit. It's the one that put them on our radar, and it's awesome: "Where Were You When I Needed You." From 1966. The Grass Roots had a really nice run from 1966 to about 1971 making hit records. Then they just sort of disappeared. Another good one they did was "Temptation Eyes." "Let's Live for Today" is definitely one of those songs that will instantly transport you back to the Summer of Love, 1967. Another band from this era, totally different, though, but will also transport you to the '60s is a group called The Association. Their hits include "Along Comes Mary," "Cherish" (a ballad, their biggest hit), "Never My Love." Very different vibe than the Grass Roots, but still, very '60s. Another one: The Cyrkle. Pronounced "Circle." Just two hits, but they were good ones: "Red Rubber Ball" and "Turn Down Day." Definitely worth a listen. Also from that 1966-67 time frame. A couple of one-hit wonders from that era: The Soul Survivors with a song called "Expressway to Your Heart", and The Music Explosion with their hit "Little Bit O' Soul." Finally, two more one-hit wonders that you will absolutely love: "98.6" by Keith, and "Pied Piper" by Crispian St. Peter. Trust me. Both from '66, both awesome.
@caretaker1582 жыл бұрын
Oh I'd be willing to bet that the harmonies of "The Association" will blow their minds!!!!!!!!! Especially "Cherish" and "Never My Love"... the sound is so tight and precise. Also, great suggestion of The Cyrkle doing "Red Rubber Ball". Love that song!

Just saw the Grass Roots and The Association a couple of weeks ago in the Happy Together tour. Others in the show included The Vogues ("Five O'Clock World", "Turn Around, Look at Me"), Garry Puckett ("Young Girl", "Lady Willpower", "Woman, Woman"), The Cowsills ("Hair", "The Rain, the Park and Other Things - also known as the Flower Girl song), and of course The Turtles ("Happy Together", "She'd Rather Be With Me"). Ron Dante is the lead singer for current version of The Turtles, but his biggest hit came from another band, the 1969 number one song "Sugar Sugar" by, yes, The Archie's! They played that song as well. The Cowsills we're a family band with several brothers, a little sister, and mom...sound familiar? The Partridge Family show was based on the Cowsills. Never cared much for the Cowsills, but those two songs I listed above were huge in the late '60's. "Hair" from the musical of the same name personifies the late 1960's, while "The Rain, The Park, and Other Things" sounds like something straight from the 1967 Summer of Love. The Cowsills also sang the theme song from the 1960's television show "Love American Style".
@ProdigyBowlersTour2 жыл бұрын
@@caretaker158 -- Another good reason for Jay and Amber to listen to the Cyrkle is that they'll get a little music history -- the Cyrkle toured with the Beatles in 1966 as one of the opening acts, along with the Rhondells and Bobby Hebb, who recorded a great song called "Sunny," which they should also do a reaction video to. The Rhondells never made it that big here in America, but they did have one great little song called "Younger Girl," which was written by John Sebastian of the Lovin' Spoonful, another great band from this era that has received wayyyy too little attention from these reaction channels.

My band in Florida back in the late '60s got to open for The Grass Roots twice. They were a super good band!!! They had tons of hits over the years too - there's a lot to explore here.

Since you love brass you are going to love so many of the Grassroots hits. This was an earlier song for them before the production style changed and they have some of the best pop rock horn songs ever written

Just saw the current iteration of The Grass Roots with the Happy Together tour. Played this one, "Midnight Confessions", "Temptation Eyes", "Sooner or Later", "Wait a million Years", "Two Divided by Love". These are all different than "Live for Today", but all are outstanding.

The Grass Roots were one of those bands that all the members are stand outs. This is great music.

Yes these guys were good and embodied the 60’s sound. The sound your talking about Amber was a Sitar used a lot back then!

Been watching you two for months and really enjoy your videos. I'm 61, Canadian and have been listening to new rock since I was a toddler. I love the genuine love you show for each other and for the 60s and 70s music of my youth. Although I'm now into bands like Mod Sun, MGK and Blackbear, I still appreciate my 60s and 70s roots. I would like to suggest a couple of videos for you two old souls to listen to. The first is one that still gets me emotional every time I hear it: The Last Resort by the Eagles and the second the hilarious 1974 live performance of My Ding-a-Ling by the REAL king of rock and roll....the Great Chuck Berry

We all loved this song and the Grass Roots. Amber, you would have made a great flower child! I can just see you swaying to the music with love beads and flowers in your hair. 🏵
