I have seen Pink Floyd Live 4 times… I saw this same show in N.Y. 1994. The concert brochure said the stage is 120 feet wide. It takes a crew of 60 technicians three days to set up the entire lights and all. The concert schedule required that there had to be three entire crews to keep up. They leap froged each other for 92 shows with 20 Trucks per crew and a total staff of 195. The tour cost the promoters $98.MILLION to put on, but the total profit was $260 MILLION. Nick Mason’s drumming is incredible and matches Gilmour’s guitar emotions while Richard Wright takes us on a Magic Carpet Ride of tones that form the foundation of it all.

You should hear the original version featuring Clare Torry😉
@glennbrock65604 жыл бұрын
Great Reaction. The original studio recording is with just one singer. Her name is Clare Torry and she laid down one of the most iconic vocals ever. This version is one of the few live versions of this song that actuallly works. Clare set a high bar back then. I suggest you either listen on your own or react to the original studio version of this song. Clare herself was never able to recreate the magic she captured that day in 1972, as her live attempts at this mostly fell way short. Song Suggestions: "Time", "Hey You", "High Hopes", "Coming Back To Life"(live versions only), "Keep Talkin"

The best description I've hear of this song is the vocalization of the 5 stages of grief (denial and isolation, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.).....and it changes the song forever after that.

Forget what you just watched. Get “Dark Side of the Moon”. Listen to Clare Torry on the original Great gig in the Sky. She improvises what may be the greatest female vocal performance ever recorded.

So much emotion without singing a word! Best song on whole album 😊
@claudepage62144 жыл бұрын
Originally, The Great Gig in the Sky was an innocuous track that was to be used to fill the void ending the side A. In the first demos, a passage from the Bible was read over the piano instrumental, then this was communications from NASA astronauts on mission. With the end result unsatisfying the band members, Alan Parsons (sound engeneer) enlisted the help of Clare Torry, a studio singer. They ask her to provide them with a vocal improvisation with the only indication of thinking about death and the fear it inspires. His high-flying performance perfectly transcribing these recommendations and passing through all emotional stages, from hysterical terror to final appeasement is a centerpiece of the record. Her demonstration over, she would have left the studios quickly apologizing, convinced that she had flopped, under the still dumbfounded and conquered eyes of the four Floyd. A sample of her voice is cut and added to the Speak to Me intro.

"The Great Gig In the Sky", or death. The original was a vocal interpretation of 3 stages of dying. Anger, depression and finally acceptance. Clare Torry, the session singer that first performed this song asked what the song is about and David Gilmour just said, "Think about death." Clare improvised the entire thing on the spot. These girls do a wonderful job of recreating the original, but there always is only one original!

Clare Torry's vocals As the band began casting around for a singer, album engineer Alan Parsons suggested Clare Torry, a 25-year-old songwriter and session vocalist. Parsons had previously worked with Torry, and had liked her voice on a Top of The Pops covers album. An accountant from Abbey Road Studios contacted Torry and tried to arrange a session for the same evening, but she had other commitments, including tickets to see Chuck Berry that evening, so a session was scheduled for Sunday evening between 7 and 10pm. The band played the instrumental track for Torry and asked her to improvise a vocal. At first, Torry struggled to divine what the band wanted, but then she was inspired to pretend that she herself was an instrument. She performed two complete takes, the second one more emotional than the first. David Gilmour asked for a third take, but halfway through Torry stopped, feeling she was getting repetitive and had already done the best she could. The final album track was assembled from all three takes. The members of the band were deeply impressed by Torry's performance, but were so reserved in their outward response that she left under the impression that her vocals would never make the final cut. She only became aware they were used when she saw the album at a local record store, spotted her name in the credits and purchased it. In 2004, she sued Pink Floyd and EMI for songwriting royalties on the basis that her contribution to "The Great Gig in the Sky" constituted co-authorship with keyboardist Richard Wright. Originally, she was paid the standard flat fee of £30 for Sunday studio work. In 2005, an out-of-court settlement was reached in Torry's favour, although the terms of the settlement were not disclosed.[8] All releases after 2005 carry an additional credit for "Vocal composition by Clare Torry"[9] for the "Great Gig in the Sky" segment of the booklet or liner notes.

When I bought the 8-track /yes, 8-track for you youngsters/ in '73 Everyone thought I was nutso bc my fave tune was This one, "GREAT GIG IN THE SKY"... Not only did my moms yell at me when I played it, but all my friends thought IT was their least fave on the album/8-track. Well, look at me now, I've got my own Army of Great Gig lovers!!! Of course, the above video IS NOT THE GREAT ORIGINAL W/ Claire Torrey in the studio...oh well, beggars can't be choosers. If u want greatness, do the original from DARK SIDE.... PEACE Y'ALL.

I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call “God“. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. That’s the true intentions of the song. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus. We could not tell the singer so as to avoid her making any comments that would end up in the media. The speaking heard at the beginning was recorded at Apple records prior to the recording of the song. Roger Waters placed a recorder at the door asking anyone who walked by to answer some questions into the microphone. The janitor stopped and recorded his answer to the question….”Are You Afraid Of Dying”?. It was decided to add the recording to the start of “Great Gig In The Sky”. It leads people to believe the song is about dying, but that is actually not the case. The Great Gig In The Sky…is GOD … The incredible vocals from Clare Torry happened when she did not know what they wanted. David Gilmour told her to pretend her voice is a Saxophone like on other songs on the album, no words, just tones. Results are legendary.

The first PF song I heard was US and Them and it was a major departure from the Zep and Aerosmith I was into at the time. Bought the album and listened to this song and hated it. Despised it even. Didn't get it, didn't think it belonged on an otherwise great album. Today I think it's one of the most beautiful masterpieces ever created in rock. If it's possible the Pulse version is even better than the original.
