Lead singer Jim Peterik was just 19 when this was released in early 1970. The track was the fastest selling single in Warner Bros. history to that point and ultimately peaked at #2 (stuck behind the 3-week chart-topping run of The Guess Who's "American Woman"). This track was the only hit for the Ides of March (which had been together through their teen years), though Peterik would go on to further success years later in 1982 co-writing and singing lead on Survivor's #1 hit "Eye of the Tiger."

Actually, they had another hit, "Superman." It got radio play, certainly, though not as big as "Vehicle" for sure.
@walterpanovs
@walterpanovs 2 жыл бұрын
That was their follow-up to "Vehicle" and it only made it up to #64, which while not a hit was better than what followed. They released three more singles through 1971 with one making it to #73 and two not even cracking the Top 100.

@@walterpanovs I knew "Superman' wasn't as big, but it got enough airplay (where I lived anyway) to make one think it got higher than #64. Interesting. I don't even remember their other singles.

They came right in the middle of Chicago and Blood, Sweat, and Tears making such a big splash. Ides of March was good (once) and they rode the coattails of the other two bands with the "horn" sound.

Early 70s when this was still #1 they played in Monmouth College gym. Bunch of us were outside listening. The singer announced they had fans outside that couldn't get in and called for security to open the doors. We all filed in as they went into this song. Sounded even better live to me.
@scottNNJ

The story behind the song is not as creepy as the first line suggests. Prior to writing the song, the singer was dating a girl and madly in love with her. She broke it off and he was distraught. After time, she called him back and got his hopes up again, but only because she needed a ride somewhere. Time and again, she called him for a ride, and still in love with her he obliged. At one point he came to a realization as to his role and shouted “I’m your vehicle”… and that inspired the song.

This is another of those great one-hit wonder from 1970. I remember when this song was very popular. According to the writer Jim Peterik, the song is about a girl that often used him for her mode of transportation, leading him to surmise that he was little more than her "vehicle". Peterik later on founded the rock group "Survivor" (1982 hit "Eye Of The Tiger") & became an extremely successful songwriter.

This was one of my favorite driving songs back in the day. My oldest son was accepted into the Jones County Community College Maroon Typhoon Marching Band in 1991 as 3rd trombone. Their football half time show included "Vehicle" and they closed with "I Can See For Miles" by the Who invariably bringing the house down.

This is what used to be known as "jazz fusion". Chicago, Blood Sweat and Tears and a few others sort of shook up those of us who loved soft, 70's rock sound (though I'm pretty sure this came out in the last 60's because I remember my older sister buying this record with her allowance money). Great band that should have had more hits.

They were the music companies competition to The Jazz/Rock Fusion Band Blood Sweat & Tears who were very very popular in the late 60's and early 70's that pioneer the Jazz Big Band style mixed with Rock n' Roll.....so the group made their money and we never heard from them again!!!!

Lead vocals by hit-maker Jim Peterik, who would go on to have even more success with his melodic rock powerhouse Survivor, familiar to many for their contributions to the Rocky movies series e.i. Eye Of The Tiger and Burning Heart (you need to check out some Survivor). Vehicle would fit right into the Rocky series too. The lyrics could be considered quite questionable if you're being mean, lol. Cheers

Paul paying the song on David Letterman helps explain why he was one of guest performers on the Ides of March 2019 album "Play On". Paul plays on the song "Rule of Three". Bo Bice, who sang "Vehicle" on American Idol, co-wrote the song "Love or Something Like It" with Jim Peterik and they sing it together on the "Play On" album.
