When I was 16 years old, which would have been in 1971, I saw Jessie Collin Young and the Youngbloods play at the Satsop Rock Festival, a three day event in rural western Washington. On Saturday morning, we woke up to the announcement that the promoter had skipped out with all the proceeds, leaving the performers high and dry. Most bands refused to play, but three bands agreed to stay and play for free to fill out Saturday and Sunday of the festival. This was Jessie Collin Young with the Youngbloods, Wishbone Ash, and War. Each group played an extended set of several hours and went round robin, repeating many songs over and over for the next two days. I never got to thank you personally for that, Jessie, so let me do so now. Thank you. It was a rewarding experience I've carried my entire life, and showed me that some things are more important than getting paid. I went out and bought your live album the next week, and have loved all the music you have made.

Satsop Rock Festival and Tin Cup Races was to be the Northwest's Woodstock. I rolled in on a Harley. Threw tarps over the bikes to sleep under and get out of the rain. Got nailed by a Stater on the way in for no helmet. They were on all the back roads coming in. A guy in a farm truck full of watermelons tried to run the crowd down. Was never sure what set him off. But we ate a lot of watermelon. Northwest natives were fighting for their rites to fish for salmon and were being jailed for fishing. They came to Satsop and cooked and sold salmon and fry bread to raise bail money for the protesters. Never forgot how good that tasted. Of course the music was amazing and thousands of people, except for one farmer, living in harmony. Over the last several years I've had a chance to play/jam with Banana. Youngbloods guitar player. Now with cotton white hair and going by Grandpa Banana. Check out his YT Videos.

I lived for the Young bloods. I am now 70 years old and darkness darkness was my song. I played it over and over and over. There was no getting enough of it and it breaks me down completely and into tears even to this day. It didn't hurt that at the time My last name was Youngblood it isn't now but it was then.

Hearing the story from Jesse's lips about how he wrote this song for the grunts on the line in the jungle was this Vietnam Veteran's most treasured moment. Thank you for making this happen. And thank Jesse for his help getting me through my hour of Drarkness, Darkness You can make the mountains ring, or make the angels cry.

The studio version of this was one of Mom's favorite songs, to the point where she specifically bought it when iTunes first became a thing. It really takes off after the first verses. I've long called it 'Depression Anxiety: The Song,' and the story behind its writing fits that mood perfectly.

Thanks for bringing me full circle on this gem of a song. I have been a Jesse Colin Young fan for 50+ years. This song was a favorite of my friends/brothers serving in Viet Nam who turned me on to it in 69 or 70. It was heavy to hear Jesse say he wrote it for those in Nam. They heard you sir; yes indeed they did. My service was stateside later. This song always had a special meaning to me and always will. Too many didn't make it back. Some sadness at their loss but joy at the memories we shared. RIP Tony, JD, Harold, Donnie, Smitty, Junebug, Chefo. Will meet you again on the other side. Save me a place. Peace out.

What a pleasure watching Jesse on your channel, and hearing this great song. Another great band from the 1960's that has a very similar sound is It's A Beautiful Day. They have a haunting folk like sound, and also use a violin. Check out their song White Bird.

I graduated HS in 1970. It was a very scary time! Most of the 50,000 solders that lost their lives in Vietnam were teenagers drafted right out of high school! All males were required to sign up for the draft within 30 days of their 18th birthday. All 3 networks broadcasted nightly casualty reports and war footage. Once a year there was a lottery. Every ping-pong ball had a date. First date picked had highest priority for getting drafted. My birthday came up 60. The next year my kid brother was 330. For anyone my age, these songs are very personal. Woodstock is very personal.

I have been a big fan of JCY and the Youngbloods seen before Elephant Mount. I would to bed with Darkness Darkness, and be asleep before for Turn IT Over. Then after school and weekend the album was played over and over, my BF from eight grade still remembers that as well. I still have that album along with his solo albums from the mid 75's and all the CD'S and iPod downloads. In 1984 The Youngblood's reunited for a tour and came to the Gorge in George, in Washington State, then it was such a small venue, I have great photos/up front stage! Jesse was my crush!! I still lust at his lyrics and voice. With You and KZbin I'm getting a reconnection! So good to see a new generation diggin Jesse. Thank uou!!

I'm particular to his "Songbird" album, or I should say cassette...because I used it to smooch with my honey in the back of a VW Beetle in the 70s. It was around the same time as Elton John's Madman Across the Water album, and I swear I think they were of equal high quality and songage...for lack of better words. "Songbird", "Daniel" and "Before You Came" were my favorites. He should do "Before You Came"...which, now that I think about it, is about the sunset of an Indian nation, which thrived before we came, sad to day. On Elton's album "Indian Sunset" is about the same thing. [Twilight Zone theme] I saw sweet-tongued Jesse at Park Center, now called Grady Cole Center, in Charlotte, back in the '70s I guess it was. He has taken on a little gray since then, but who hasn't? :)

Listen to the 1969 version the original version of darkness darkness when his voice was better and he could understand what he was singing, and because it had to do with early Vietnam or in that era because it was Vietnam at that time every time you heard it, it would break your heart Because you know that they were out there in the jungle thousands of miles away in a place that they never thought they would be in ! Please give it a try 1969 recording of darkness darkness by the Youngbloods !
