For me this song couldn’t have come out at a better time. A song about how fear is poison, and casting that away to free yourself, right before the pandemic and all the shit since then. It was almost eerily prophetic, though in true Maynard form, he talks in concepts and not about specifics, and everyone can apply their own experiences to how they experience the song.

This album came out just as RUSH ended. I listened to it on repeat everyday and it helped me not only get over the loss of RUSH but it cemented my love for this band. TOOL quickly became my new obsession.

I take this song to be from the perspective of a man steeling himself to leave an abusive narcissist. The section about fearing the light of the others is indicative of isolation and gaslighting, two very common tools of control and abuse. The poison being purged is all of the cognitive distortions and ruined self perception. The "venom in mania" is also reminiscent of the way BPO/NPD can get incredibly nasty when you threaten to leave them.

I'm sure someone else has invited you to consider listening to a bit of A Perfect Circle already but I'm just here to say the same. These are prolific creators and whatever generation has the good/bad fortune to see our species demise will absolutely know this music. Fun fact: Adam Jones was apart of the art design crew on the first Jurassic Park when he heard Maynard's vocal demo tape and decided to leave and join the band.
