Tracy Chapman was literally living out of her car just before she recorded this. A friend at Tufts had a father who became her agent and got her signed to her record deal. Then she won a Grammy for Best New Artist and Best Female Vocalist. Nominated for Album of the Year

The song is not autobiographical but the fact that she made you feel that it was just goes to prove her amazing talent - The character makes the same mistake her mother did - She married a man who drank and didnt work and spent you time down the pub with his mates than with her and the children. All her dreams were just that and she found herself back in the same life she had before - and at the end she tells him to take his 'fast car' and leave and keep on driving

As I understood it, it was not a song about her own life at least. "In part everything that a person writes is autobiographical but the songs are directly so and most of them were not and Fast Car wasn’t one that was directly autobiographical. I never had a Fast Car, it’s just a story about a couple, how they are trying to make a life together and they face challenges." Tracy Chapman about Fast Car in BBC Radio 2010

Gotta remember the artist isn’t always the main character of the song. Tracy Chapman didn’t go through all of the stuff she’s singing- I don’t believe she was ever homeless for example, but the character resonates with so many people. This is a great song, it sucks you in.

Despite what you seem to think, it's not an autobiographical song. Chapman grew up with her divorced mother, in Cleveland, which was a rough city, and had a tough childhood. Then she got a chance through what you might call a private Head Start program. She graduated from high school and went to Tufts University (a very well-regarded school) and graduated with a BA in Anthropology and African Studies. She then immediately began singing, and at 23 was signed to a record contract. The song might well be the story of other girls she grew up with, but it's not her story.

She did music for fun while in college and was 'discovered' cut a few albums, but eventually went back to school and became a lawyer... she still releases music today - a genuine talent that makes music for the love of it, not to break records, follow trends, or make tons of money... a rare bird indeed.

I'm from America, specifically from Texas where we have strong women. I have watched so many reactions to this amazing song and they talk about her voice. She was strong but the point was that she wanted to run away with the guy with the car to start a new life. she was saying "we were driving and we can leave today". by the end of the song the boy was a drunk like her father, she had kids and was repeating everything so instead of leaving like her mother did she told him to take his car and go. "YOU can leave tonight ".

This was my childhood. I found my guy. We flew off into the sunset. We both busted our butts and struggled for a long time, but then he finally scratched and clawed his way up and that ended my days of housekeeping, babysitting, and working at the gas station. We just built our dream house and are in the process of making it ours. And we're still in love. Probably more now than we were at the start.

I think you missed the point of the story. It's not a happy story at all. It's sad and heart-breaking. She had a hard life, dropped out of school to take care of drunk father, etc, and the guy with the fast car was her chance to escape for a better life with opportunities that she could never have at home. The fast car is representative for a vehicle of change. Things with the guy we're good at first. She felt happy, loved, and life had possibilities.(That's the chorus of the song) Then once they moved, they end up in a homeless shelter and she gets pregnant. Even though she works hard and dreams of a big house in the suburbs, the guy never finds/keeps a job and he starts drinking heavily. He doesn't help with the kids or responsibilities. So she is stuck in the same position she was in back home with her father. She is poor, has kids with a father that is a drunk, and she sees that there is not much of a future for her. The cycle from the beginning of the song starts all over again. She is trapped in that cycle. That's why she says twice in the song, once with her life at home with dad and at end with the guy, "leave tonight or live and die this way". This is a story of desperation. She knows she has to get out, and the literal and methaphoric "fast car" is her vehicle for escape to a better life so she can " be someone, be someone, be someone".

Such a great metaphor for wanting to leave a horrible situation. I felt the same way back around '98-2001 in high school. My buddy would pick me up in his beat up '81 Honda Civic and being the son of a very strict, hyper-religious dad who used to practically keep me under lock and key most of the time, it was my moment of freedom. We used to drive up 45 minutes east of White Rock, BC, Canada to Coquitlam every weekend to see our girlfriends at the time. The one time when all was right with the world. It was my lone escape from the pain I was feeling at home. And even though I don't see the guy anymore, he is tops with me for being a huge part of that and making it all possible. Those were the days.

I just love this song. When Tracey's album came out in 1988 - just called 'Tracey Chapman', I listened to it over and over again, barely played anything else for ages. Such incredible songs and beautiful voice. I also love 'Talkin 'bout A Revolution' , 'Mountains O'Things', and 'Across the Lines' - reactions to any of them would be great. I could really relate emotionally to this one though. Although my dad was not a drunk, my family was messed up and abusive and my dad could get violent at times, so I really related to wanting to escape and just 'fly away'. Tracey by the way is a four time Grammy winner and her albums have gone platinum multiple times - including the first one in 1988 when she was only 24. Great reaction guys - I love how much it impacted you and your appreciation of her voice. Also I really enjoy your lovely Scouse accents. I lived in Liverpool for a year back in '91, kinda miss hearing the accent.

Isn’t she fabulous? You’ve got to listen to her “ Give Me One Reason”. Even Eric Clapton had to jam with her!

So well said. This song, I hold in a Special place, in my heart. The first time I heard it, I knew I would forever remember it -- the quiet Desperation, to just GET OUT of a suppressive situation & want to ... Live! You just root for Tracy & her brother to Make it, Somewhere ... over the rainbow.

Sweetheart this is a song. She may know some people who went through this, but it's not her story. Tracy Chapman was raised by her mother, went to prep school and Tufts University. And she used to date Alice Walker, author of The Color Purple.

Might have been hard for you to understand her but towards the end of the song she wasn't saying that she couldn't find a job. She said that her boyfriend didn't get a job and she was paying all the bills while he was out getting drunk with his friends all the time. So she said change or take your fast car and leave or you're going to live and die this way.

@@MrsJoannaG Tracey has had relationships with women, though she's very private about her personal life and sexual orientation, so she might be Bi. I've listened to this song so many times, and always thought she was singing about a boyfriend. Most probably because it fits a stereotype of the behaviour of some men - go out and get drunk with their friends all the time while their wife or girlfriend works, pays the bills, looks after the kids - which she also mentions in the song. She could have had a boyfriend as a teenager before having relationships with women, it's a really common thing coz of heteronormativity, especially in the 80s. However I'm not sure that this song is actually autobiographical as many people, including the guys reacting, think it is. On Wikipedia it says she graduated from High School and went to university, got a degree in Anthropology and African Studies. Perhaps this song is about someone she knew, or perhaps parts are her story and parts are fiction. She's such an emotionally powerful singer that people tend to assume that the stories must be hers, but she may just be singing some of the stories to give voice to people who's lives are like that.

@@bellatronics I've always felt while listening to 'Fast Car' that it was just a story she was telling like any other storyteller who writes about situations that they've heard about, thought about, or observed but not necessarily experienced themselves. This is what I've felt since hearing the song when it debuted in 1988. So I'm not sure if it's because that's what I got from it while listening to it or I saw interviews at the time of the release and the subject was explained. I've been a Tracy Chapman fan since the first time I heard her music back in '88 when I was a teen.

You should also listen to «Behind the wall». It’s about domestic violence and other problems in low income areas, and how it’s not a priority for law enforcement. A capella and soooooo powerful. I’m not asking you to make a reaction video (unless you want to), but listen to it for your own sake.
