Fade to grey was in the UK Top 40 in late Dec 1980 and peaked in the first couple of months of 1981. It's a fine example of New Romantic music. Steve Strange either ran or owned the Blitz Club in London that championed the alternative scene. Also working in this club was Boy George (Culture Club) and Pete Burns (Dead Or Alive). Most of the great innovative electronic groups of the early 80s frequented this club. If you come back to Visage, try Damned don't cry, Mind of a toy or Night train. xx

Steve Strange also features in the video of David Bowie's Ashes To Ashes. @@mthraves I don't know what's considered "correct"; there's how the band themselves would be heard pronouncing it, but British terms-made-titles can still deviate from it in other accents and still be considered correct. Just listen to how Nick Rhodes says Duran Duran, with his "d'chur-ahn d'chur-ahn"... ain’t nobody says it like that in the states, and he’d obviously never call it "wrong." I personally always pronounced Visage "Viz-idge" in the same way I’d pronounce the same actual word in the American lexicon. But, I like to hear the actual Blitz Kids sayin’ it. So kewl! Belonging to the subculture that was called New Romantics, they took influences from punk, glam rock, electronica, and got banded into the New Wave wagon, very popular in the early 80s Visage was the Daddy of the New Romantics. The fashions spawned from this subculture defined the 80s. If you want to pin point where the 70s ended and the 80s began, you would point to bands like this. This too was a huge part of my teens. This is my favourite song of all time. As French-speaker I can appreciate the lyrics. Visage were not really a band, they were a project. This song was about depression, being aware of your surroundings but being out of it at the same time, and wanting it all to end. The song was ahead of its time in terms of the beat, and the bassline was played on a synth using the Vox Humana setting. I really love the weird video as it has nothing to do with the theme of the song and yet it is sort of arty and theatrical, and very New Wave.

Jayvee, there is a great documentary film on The Blitz club called,"Blitzed, the 80's kid's story". Steve Strange (lead singer) basically set up a Studio 54 type environment at the Blitz and Rusty Egan(the drummer you hear) was the DJ. They played Roxy music, Bowie, Kraftwerk. And a whole new genera of music came out of that. It was called at that time, "New Romantic". Ultravox, Spandau Ballet, Culture Club, Duran Duran , among others came out of this British movement. It was meant to be more elegant than the punk movement which came before.

Visage - pronounced Viz-arje - means face in french. This is my favourite track ever. I had worked all summer to buy a stacked hifi system with large speakers. Mum had moved the speakers and one was on the windowsill (single glazing). I put loudness on, which is extra bass, and when you get that thump of bass in the last part, promptly cracked the window across the corner 😳 the singer here, Steve Strange, founded the Blitz club in London, was involved in lots of other music, and essentially created the New Romantic movement in the UK. Blitz kids from the club were asked to appear in David Bowie's Ashes to Ashes, and many became famous in their own right. Spandau Ballet, Midge Ure of Ultravox, Soft Cell, Bananarama, even Sade I believe was a Blitz kid. The 80s were amazing (I was 15 in 1980).

My favourite all time track, synonymous with my youth. Melancholy but powerful (the Pet Shop Boys later coined the phrase ‘tragi-disco’) it was never supposed to have mass appeal but it captured the spirit of the times and remains a classic 80s track. The intro is spine tinglingly good; the part where the siren fades and the synths come in still gives me goosebumps. Some say it’s a triumph of form over content and yet it has a profound depth. The video depicts Adam and Eve’s fall from paradise, becoming conscious of their mortality and frailty.

One of my trump cards of songs. It basically mentions our friendships and relationships how we all leave them out without explanation. So You have to pretend maybe but also remain the image of someone so that You want to admire and feel comfortable being Yourself or with them again. Not in a manipulative way. But just codependency vs independence of leaving the situations of actions and situations while You are in a relationship or friends with someone. I love it. It can also interpreted a relationship to God. Keep it image of the idea of him or the image.
