One of my favourite songs of all time! I was 9 when this came out in 1997 and was instantly captured by it. It’s so haunting and melancholic. It’s got a real empty, lonely, hollow feeling to it, yet brings so much joy when I listen to it. Even after 25 years it still sounds fresh.

jesuschrist he is not paying attention to the real deep meaning , its not about vibes , its a man saying another man ... all that kind of unbelieavable things "shockeing lyrics entires countries they couldn´t play the video"

Hell yeah man 88 was the perfect time to be born. Still have the 80s relevant entering the 90s, having all that amazing 90s music and tv, 2000s as a teen with the punk/emo/hardcore music and right at the start of major tech boom. The greatest generation man.

This came out in 1996, 1997, if memory serves me right. Still sounds so modern! Hasn’t aged one bit 😍😍😍

This song samples "My Woman" (1932) by Al Bowlly with Lew Stone and His Monseigneur Band. Dua Lipa has also recently used the same sample in her song "Love again"

Jyoti really created a masterpiece, this song is one of those songs that I didn’t pay close attention to as a child, but lived in my head rent free ever since. It’s hauntingly melancholic but slow but also upbeat amongst other things. A juxtaposition of elements that work together yet the song itself doesn’t feel like it has just one singular distinction, which I feel Jyoti did so beautifully well.

This song is intoxicating. There have been times I've watched the video over and over for an hour. There is a crossover later in the song that is so so sexy. You know it when you hear it.

This track takes me right back to the 90s and brings back fond memories of my younger days! I live in the city where the video filmed, but many of the places in the video have now been bulldozed! Jyoti is still performing as White Town, but has never achieved the same success.

It features a muted trumpet line taken from a 1932 recording of "My Woman" by Lew Stone and his Monseigneur Band. It was in rotation on the Winn Dixie Muzak system , I love that thick bass

I love you vibing out to music. I feel like you have my brain 😂. This song was a classic one hit wonder. It’s very unique, quirky and infectious. I feel like this could have been an Ace Of Base song. Infectious bass, smart percussion and then that trumpet hook where they would use flute typically.

Always such a treat to see some else experience something you really like for the first time. The song itself is so interesting and complex, and the music video is just so cool with a LOT of references to silent films of the 20s and 30s with everything from Charlie Chaplin to Luis Bunuel.

Jyti was sampling & recording in his bedroom 20+ years before Soundcloud took off for DIY Musicians. With that beat it still sounds modern. A reviewer called Todd in the Shadows did a 20 minute documentary about White Town and this song, it's a really interesting story.

Lyrically, this song is an answer to Al Bowlly's recording of "My Woman", the intro of which, musically, this track samples throughout. (note: Bing Crosby did the original, but in a different style.)

I love listening to all your reviews, especially the stuff from years back, brings back the fond memories, but something I enjoy even more are your views and thoughts, it is almost like I am listening to my own thoughts, so similar. Many times people are so numb to their feelings and emotions, but you, my good sir, are not one of those individuals. You have a firm grasp on true emotion and true humanity. You feel on such a deep level, a rarity these days. Keep up the excellent work and I look forward to your next review.

They just had the one hit, but it's good. It's quirky in the same way that Cake is, which reminds me someone ought to request them. I just realized you're gonna probably love Numb by U2. It's very trippy in every way, song and vid, sung by Edge. Weezer is quirky too but not in a way you'd like I don't think.

I had to go through all the comments to see if anyone noticed: the part that you thought was violins, is a sample/replayed element from "The Imperial March" (Darth Vader's theme) from "Star Wars". I love the silent film, Chaplin or Keaton aesthetic of the video.
@jameshickman8336
@jameshickman8336 Жыл бұрын
It's actually not sampled at all from John Williams & "The Imperial March ". (Even tho it's similar sounding). Its sampled from a 1932 song. Anyway, Dua Lipa samples the same trumpet in "Love Again".
