You must have sympathy for the Devil, he gets blamed for all the bad shit in the world when most of it is our own damn fault. THATS what its about.

Every time there's a bad cop they label them all bad and every prisoner swore they were innocent. Check out "Can't You Hear Me Knockin". The last 5 minutes is the Stones jamming with no idea the tape was still rolling. Incredible.

Brilliant song by classic rock's funkiest band. As a lover of history, I'd suggest going back and checking out the lyrics, it's loaded with historic references. More Stones please!

The line was “every cop is a criminal and all the sinner saints”, Really should have watched the lyric video. The line that sums up the song is at the very end “I tell you one time, you’re to blame” We blame a made up devil for all the evil things we do. It has and still is our way of not taking responsibility for our actions.

You needed to read the lyrics. The line IT WAS YOU AND ME pretty much sums it up. The devil gets the blame when it is humans do all the horrid things. The Devil is just there to temp us and to punish us when we do those things. He does NOT DO THEM HIMSELF.

Mike! Have you been living under a rock?? Lol I have heard this song on FM radio at least a million times and counting in my life........ This song was written as the Devil's take on 20th century atrocities. It is NOT a satanic song. In fact, the Stones's original lyric was "Who shot Kennedy?" But after RFK's assassination in 1968, they changed the lyric to "Who shot the Kennedy's?"

It's not just about 20th century atrocities. It incorporates famous misdeeds throughout history. In the first verse Mick sings about Jesus Christ and Pontius Pilate. But I agree, can't believe that's the first time he's heard the song.

The inverse reality of the Devil certainly seems not only manifest today, but Gov policy.

Another story song about the Devil well worth a listen is Spanish Train by Chris De Burgh

I'd recommend reading all the lyrics to this song at some point - e.g. the Kennedys line would make more sense in the context of the preceding lyrics. He (the devil) is basically saying that all the atrocities in history were only partly his fault - humankind has to share the blame. His crimes are confusion and deception, the other crimes are ours... Still a banger anyway, even if you ignore the lyrics!

hi michael, hope you and yours are all super. i do like the rolling stones, but they are not a group i would purposely look up. i think brown sugar is probably my favourite, but they have so many songs it's hard to choose just one. very good reaction and explanation of the song, i'm impressed.
