The Amersfoortse kei is not a little cobble stone but a huge 7000 kilo bolder that was placed in the centre of Amersfoort which gave the Amersfoorters the nickname Kreientrekkers, which means bolder pullers. It took 400 people to pull the thing into the city on a dare somewhere in the 17th century.

A dare which Everart Meyster and some other nobleguy had made. It was pulled from De Stompert (near Soesterberg) all the way to the city center!

I can highly recommend the Hanzesteden (hanseatic league). A collection of cities that used to be part of a trade route and trade agreements between cities all over Northern Europe. It started in Germany, and most of the cities were German, but there were many other cities and countries involved as well. The ones I know are lovely are Zutphen and Deventer, I live near Doesburg, which is also one. If I remember correctly, there is a tour between a few cities that starts with a steam engine, then a boat tour and finally a regular train back to where you started. I have done that with my parents at least once. And while the Veluwe and Veluwezoom aren't cities, they're still great to visit. :)
@Benny_000 Жыл бұрын
Yes I just wanted to say this! I especially love Zutphen since there are basically no modern buildings in the city center and you can become fully immersed in the 16th century architecture. I also visited Doesburg and the only thing I didn't like is that there were too many cars parked in the old streets.

Amersfoort is my favourite destination for a bike trip from Utrecht. And there is something weird with it, too, I think, because the province Utrecht really is a province in two parts: the Western part is essentially Randstad, most people there won't even really object to being called a "Hollander". But the eastern part is different: much more rural (much more religious, too), and definitely not Randstad. And Amersfoort sits exactly on the divide between "the two Utrechts". In the 17th century, the cities of Utrecht and Amersfoort were rivals, and competitors for trade. When there were plans to dig a new canal as part of an improved Water Line defense, Utrecht vetoed this, because they were afraid of Amersfoort getting a better connection to the Zuyderzee than Utrecht had. The result was that when Louis XIV attacked the Netherlands in 1672, he could march straight to Utrecht and basically sack the city, before he was stopped at the Water Line that was now not in front of, but behind Utrecht. City was bankrupted because of it (and suffered major damage in a storm, two years later. Without any money- or support from any other part of the country, recovery from that took until 1850. There's probably a lesson there about short term and long term vision ;-) )

When you ever come back (to Amersfoort) send me a message. My father works as a city guide on a boat (through the canals). I will ask him to give you guys a tour. I really enjoy your video’s. Keep up the good work!

The thing I missed most when living in Maastricht was the water in the neighborhood and the jackdaws. When I was back I missed the dialect, Mestreechs, carnaval, the river, and Maria. No trip to the Amersfoort zoo? Speaking of medieval castles, if you love visiting them i suggest that when you're ever in Limburg again i suggest checking out Hoensbroek and Valkenburg. Hoensbroek castle got named best castle in the Netherlands and just a stones throw away from Hoensbroek you have the old castle ruins of Valkenburg which has a lot of history (it got blown to pieces in the Franco Dutch war in 1672) and the center of Valkenburg is very nice and cozy.

Amersfoort is also a town on Staten Island. From the time that New York was New Amsterdam. (Staten Island) In 1664 the British took over and it became New York. As a tip, read the book: Island in the Center of the World. It tells the history of the Dutch until the overtake by the English. Its part of the American history (National Treasure) Amersfoort is also known as “Kei-Stad” Its symbol is a bolder from the last ice age, which towed into the city by the towns people and had a prominent place in the park near Monnikkendam.

I only knew Amersfoort from driving through it by train. I have never visited the city. I think I will sometime. I can strongly recommend Groningen. Housing areas for the poor, sick and widows. If you don't know wat to look for, you walk by them without notice them. And try the "Groninger koek".

Once you have done that take a trip to the province of Limburg. Especially the south with their capital Maastricht is great.
