Bulgarian here pls take note that we do not usualy put much salt in dishes as for not to oversalt or undersalt and this is left for the consumer to decide how much saltynes they like. In some places this might be the case.

Also, the place looked like one of these home-style food places (as the guy guessed). Not meant to be a culinary wonder, more of a place where people can stop to get a quick basic lunch. =)

Btw just to clarify the head shaking thingy ... first and foremost we (bulgarians) listen to what you say ... if you say "yes" or "no " .. secondly we look at your face.. if its a smily face - yes, if its a frowning face - NO.. and then and only then we watch the head movement for a clue what you want to say.. So basically nomatter which way you move your head if you say "yes"its a yes, if you have a sulky face - its a no.. if you have no expression and say nothing - then we watch the head movement

Food is not salted when you buy it. You need to salt it and add other spices at your will. Also you really need to visit a traditional bulgarian restaurant with music and everything.

There are buses that run 24/7 back and forth between the airport and Athens center , they're even cheaper and faster than the metro. Research your options and get information about the area before you get there. Also search on line for potential strikes, usually they are announcing it ahead of time, so people know. Strikes and demonstrations happen around Europe fortunately not so often but sucks to try to get somewhere those days.

As a bulgarian I really feel like the head nodding for "no" and head shaking for "yes" is not presented from foreigners accurately. Yes we tend to shake our heads to affirm but it's not like you show here :D It's more of tilting your head left and right for a yes and tilting your head backwards once for a no. Hope I explained it well enough :D

I think that the good experience of the places we visit depends a lot on the random chance and the luck. I’m from Bulgaria and I’ve never been to those places (tbh they seem really boring and not welcoming). There’s a lot to be seen in Bulgaria and I feel so sorry ‘cos it seems that you guys haven’t had the chance for a really amazing experience that a lot of others have.

I feel sorry for your disappointment in the Athens transportation system, it is not that bad actually. I recognised the place you were staying, it is in Zografou area, next to the University and to my parents house! Hope you come back to Greece again and enjoy it more, maybe try the islands or the mainland. Greetings from Greece!

You need to open up TripAdvisor or use google and check out some ratings of things/places. Like there are some really nice restaurants in Sofia and if you want authentic Bulgarian you need to go to a MEHANA (MEXANA). Also, there are much better place to see/visit in Sofia than going to the Socialist Museum on your first day lol... it seems like you didn't do much research maybe?

@@Peregrination Athens Metro runs approximately from 5:30am till 12:30am (midnight). On Fridays and Saturdays, the last train departs at 2am. During peak hours, the metro runs every 3 minutes, and during the slowest hours, they run every 5 to 10 minutes. So most probably that day was a strike ... something very often in public transportation (as it belongs to government / state ) some times it is all day.. and some times they strike for some period of the day most common is to strike from 5:30-09:00 and later at 21:00 util end of the last shift

I see you were at the Museum of Socialist Art. Socialism in Bulgaria is a rather controversial issue and the population is constantly divided and arguing. Some say it is the most horrible thing that has happened to Bulgaria, while others say it is one of the best. But as one Bulgarian professor of history says: "In order to have an objective and real value for a period, at least 80-100g must be passed" Personally, I think this period is quite good for our history, because then the great industrialization happens in Bulgaria, we acquire one of the most powerful armies in Europe and the Balkans and we have extremely well-developed agriculture, etc. But as everything on this earth has its disadvantages. Especially in the beginning when people were persecuted for a reason and for no reason, indeed many murderers and bad people got their merit after 9.9.1944 (The date when socialism came to Bulgaria), but many intellectuals and intelligent people died for no reason. However, this changed after the Soviet leader Yosif Stalin died and Nikita Khrushchev came in his place, the government in Bulgaria also changed. Todor Zhivkov becomes General Secretary of the Bulgarian Communist Party and leader of Bulgaria. He orders many of these camps to be closed and has extremely good policies.

If you want to visit Bulgaria, Sofia is not the right place. The city is dirty, overpopulated, the traffic is nightmare and you dont have alot to see there , except old communistic buildings :D ... If you want to visit Bulgaria I recommended citys like Plovdiv (6th oldest city in the world and 2019 European capital of culture) Varna (sea capital of Bulgaria)Burgas, Veliko Turnovo (Old Bulgarian capital with nice architecture and ancient castle). If you are young man who wants to drink, get high and find some girls , then Sunny Beach (The capital of alcohol tourism :D) and Golden Sands are for you. In Bulgaria you can find a lot of nice places on the sea side for the summer. If you like winter and winter sports - Bansko is your place. Also Pamporovo and Borovetz. In Bulgaria you can find the most beautiful mountains in Europe, so you can explore Pirin, Rila and Rhodope Mountains if you like mountain adventures :)
