The taxi drivers in Bogota are the worst in Colombia; many of them are illegal (they work without authorities' authorization), so they take advantage of foreign people like you that do not know the cost of the fare, and they steal money like in your case, you paid five times more than the actual cost of your transportation from the airport to your hotel. But do you know what? You can go to the police station and file a report, show the video, and the police might find that thief, and then you can get your money back. Good luck, and welcome to Colombia.

I can see the bus rapid transit of columbia which Cebu is trying to implement also. The traffic seems good there. Soon hopefully the first phase of the BRT in Cebu will be completed by December and improve public transport.

Dustin, it appears that you weren't aware of how the taxi meters work in Colombia. There is a chart, usually hanging on the headrest, that will let you know the cost due that was associated with the reading of 181. It's always wise to ask for price before getting into taxi. I really believe that the taxi driver was confused at 1st, but then decided to keep the change. He should have been honest as well.

while crossing a street in bogota, i got my phone stolen by a guy on a scooter. luckily it was the travel phone, a cheap and old xiaomi that was probably worth $30 but it's still annoying and rattled me a bit mentally.

At least you got to your destination safely even if you were scammed on the fare. A lot of people below are saying be very careful it is not very safe, I am sure you will be you have been travelling for years and know what to look out for. Hi Dustin, we went there last Nov. and our tour guide said never watch those performers on the street unless you’re giving them money. He said if you tried to give them $5, they won’t accept and asked for 20. If you tried to give them 20 they won’t accept and asked for 100. He said be aware of your surroundings.BTW we had our fair share of those taxis scammers. The worst was in France. As we were exiting from the airport a guy approached us and asked where we are going. Told him and gave us 80euros for the price. Didn’t accept and another 1 came and asked how much was the guy charging us. Told him 80 and he said he’ll do it for 70. Good thing my sister just kept walking and told us we will go the taxi station. On the way to our hotel, was asking ourselves if we did the right thing. Surely did because it was 22 euros only. Take care.

You should try steaks in Andres de Res. Forty dollars is too much. Colombian paella is the best. Try it in Gaudi and Sidaris. Of course bandeja paisa is a must. Their tamales are similar to Pampanga tamales. Wrapped in banana leaves too made of rice not corn flour. Beautiful women everywhere! Weather is temperate. Very nice crisp coolness. Traffic is not bad at all. Colombians are extremely friendly.

I use Charles Schwab banking, it’s free and they give you a debit card that you can use that doesn’t have international fees and they reimburse you for the atm fees, it’s all free 🙂 try looking up Charles Schwab, it’s my favorite card for traveling

Be careful Dustin have some precautions from the airport you landed down all the way to the hotel. You might encounter some suspicious person especially the taxi 🚕 drivers who we're uncontrollably widespread outside the airport. If you might get in trouble, hoping you will get some immediate help from the proper authorities. Watch out also in some hotels there's a lot of burglars following you along your stint there.
