First Time in Salem Massachusetts! (IS IT OVERRATED?)

We are spending the day in Salem, Massachusetts for the very first time! Many people have told us that it's a cool spooky fun time, but it also seems very touristy and we are wondering if it's overrated or actually a cool place to visit. Spend the day with us as we take a walking tour of the city and decide for ourselves just how cool and spooky it really is.

Crazy bc I haven’t been to Salem since I was a kid and I’ve been searching for Salem vlogs all week to just help plan a trip and get the feel of how things are. Still working through your back catalogue, so I’m sorry that this comment is on an old vid, but I’d love to visit Salem and this gave me a really great idea of what it’s like there (alongside the hocus pocus vid!) Fun fact - when I proposed to my wife here in Cornwall UK, it was on a beautiful clifftop that I later discovered was called Hells Mouth - but she wouldn’t let me have a buffy themed wedding.😂

I've been to Salem several times over the years and I think it's becoming more "touristy" now. Did you visit the House of the Seven Gables? I'm a seafood lover - lots of good seafood there! I enjoyed the tour, thanks!

We went to the house, but we didn't tour it since we had our dog with us. We tried a lot of great seafood in the area, but nothing in Salem. If you have any suggestions of where we should go when we go back, I'd love to hear them! Thanks!

Born and raised in Salem, when it was just a regular place to grow up. I graduated high school, moved away for a few years and returned to a tourist town. Residents tend to have mixed feelings. Some approve of the focus on the history of the witch trials, some feel the spotlight should be turned to the rich maritime history and amazing architecture (Samuel McIntire if you are interested), some are fed up with the traffic and congested pedestrian walkways and others just sit back, pour another glass of witches brew and watch the show….😂 Anyway, it will always be “home” to me, even though I live far away now and visit only 2-3 times a year. ❤

I was born there and live in on the border of Salem and Beverly, both great places, slight overrated, but one tip, if you want any sense of normalcy in the town, dont go in the fall.

Next time you’re there check out the Cottage Coven (it’s a retail store in old Salem that is less tourist trap and more practicing pagan. Think sachels, candles and herbs for example.) it’s close to the silversmith which is also worth visiting. And if you’re lucky enough to visit a day the farmers market is happening in the town square, you’ll find some neat artisan items there too.

Funny how no-one appears to have commented on what happened to those poor people all those years ago - an absolute disgrace, by the way, but by no means uncommon in these times - for example, in my own home town, 6 so called "witches" were cruelly executed in the 17th century (a seventh hung himself in his cell before the sentence could be carried out). 🙁

What a pity. You have the town of Salem, steeped in history, selling itself cheap on horror related tourist trinkets. Its like, something happened over 359 years ago, was all but forgotten about for most of that time, then, around 30 to 40 years ago, someone thought 'hey, we can turn a buck here' and suddenly Salem the tacky tourist trap was on the map. They should've stuck to the town's original history, that'd be worth going to see.

I have to admit, I was expecting it to be much more gimmicky than it was. It's sad that so many historic buildings have been replaced with newer, commercial properties, but overall I still think it's an interesting place to visit.

I cant understand for t he life of me why people come to salem ma for a vacation. The whole city is the biggest grift in Massachusetts lol. Possibly the whole east coast. Many of the events of the witch hysteria/trials and all that didnt even happen in present say salem. Food is ok but overpriced. All these novelty occult/witch/ghost/vampire shops are all grifts playing off the name of Salem. I grew up here my whole life and its painful to see all the tourists come here for salem and to know theyre getting taken for a ride. 🤷🏻‍♂️
