OMG as a Sri Lankan I'm very sorry to hear what happened to you :( but this is not a very common occurrence in most of Sri Lanka. You should not have covered his face as you have video proof of the crime he committed. I could have show this video to my friends in the police and prevented other tourists from being scammed like this. If you ever face a scam again please go to the police, they will definitely help all tourist especially Japanese tourist and get back your money :). Hope you liked rest of Sri Lanka though and visit again!! :)

Thank you very much for your kind words and support. Your suggestion is greatly appreciated, and if any issues arise in the future, we will seriously consider reporting them directly to the police. We were truly enchanted by the beautiful landscapes and wonderful culture of Sri Lanka, and we look forward to visiting again.
First of all as a Sri Lankan Living in Japan, I am so sorry about what happened to you. Just like in Kabukicho in tokyo, colombo and tourist areas are full of scammers. You can always refuse. If they don’t listen you can ask help of the police. Don’t give anyone unnecessary amount of money. Go to Sri Lanka. Make friends. You’ll be surprised about Sri Lankan hospitality ❤

As a sri Lankan I'm so sorry you experienced this! This has significantly reduced but sad to see some idiots still do this to tourists! Always use uber or Pickme (sri Lankan version of uber). Best is to avoid the Tuk tuks on the road

Thank you for your comment. We hope that your tourism experience in Sri Lanka will be safe and enjoyable. Through my experience, I would like tourists to use Uber and ickme to choose safe transportation and pay extra attention to avoid fraud and trouble. I hope you all have a good experience.

I want you to make a complaint to the nearest police station in Colombo. And please do not blur out the face of the scammer. Scammers do not deserve that respect. I will 100% help you make this happen.

Thank you for your kind words and cooperation. I am aware that the cause of this situation was my lack of research prior to my visit. I realized that it is essential to gather information and prepare in advance when visiting Sri Lanka.

@@-JourneyofCourage-gn7nz you are the victim here brother. Me saying sorry to you carries no effect. I think it's important to teach the scammer a lesson and get your money back, so that he won't do the same thing to another tourist.
Damn the bald tuk tuk driver should’ve been taken to the police. Call the Tourist Police and make a complaint. You have his face on camera.

I am so grateful to have been exposed to the beautiful scenery, wonderful culture and kind people of this country.

You shouldn't have blurred out his face in this video. Sri Lankan police would track down the guy and punish him. I mean this is a big money! You have to report it (btw This video is being shared all over Sri Lankan people's social media, and if you had shown us the face, the tourism police may have arrested him.

I've wondered about blurring this person's face before, but this incident shows that I didn't do enough research beforehand. This is my mistake and I deeply regret it. We hope that by watching this video, you will be more wary of fraudulent activity and help minimize damage. We also ask for your cooperation in reducing malicious acts.

@-JourneyofCourage-gn7nz As a Sri Lankan, I'm sick of these lowlifes. And I've seen many videos of tourists who got caught by 'em. This is sad, and the government should have taken more steps to protect visitors before start promoting tourism in Sri Lanka. When the country is desperately dying for dollars, this is the opposite of what we need. Then again, I suggest you think about reasonable prices before you pay for anyone. I mean of course this is not your fault and you're a victim. But still, you better be more careful of these types of people, no matter where you travel. Understandably, it's not easy to get a hang of being reasonable of prices when you're in a foreign country. At least do some bargaining as opposed to pulling bill notes out from your wallet.

@@-JourneyofCourage-gn7nz Nope, it didn't contain such language. maybe it's youtube. it had a couple of youtube links to similar scams (from Dale Phillips and Karl Rock), a link to where you can see the contact details of Sri Lankan Tourist Police (you can find their contact details from google) and a warning about scammers reaching tourists offering tours. also, not to use tuk-tuks without negotiating the price first. I think you already got the same info in other comments. you should definitely contact the Tourist Police and send the picture of the scammer and the number of the tuk-tuk if you have it recorded. Edit: Good way to find a fair tuk-tuk price is to compare it with something like Uber and PickMe (local version). I think this applies to some other countries as well.

Hello, thank you for sharing this information. It's highly valuable to raise awareness about safety during tourism in Sri Lanka. Continuously sharing this information in KZbin comments is crucial to ensure everyone's safety. When using tuk-tuks in Sri Lanka, it's important to engage in price negotiations and consider safe alternatives like Uber and PickMe. Contacting the tourist police and providing information about scammers can also help protect other travelers. Thank you once again.
