This is such a refreshing video, Yad and Dace . My favorite part was when you all raved about the ☕️ ☕️ coffee. Coffee is always my beverage od choice . I enjoyed the portion of the video about the tea bar as well, especially since the tea in the U.S. generally has no flavor, in my opinion. Thank you for showing a different side of Sri Lanka . Hi, your vlog was amazing. I love it!! To answer your question, there's a lot of foreign investment in Sri Lanka that comes from China and Singapore and other countries like India and Japan. Sri Lanka engages a lot with companies from China, Singapore, India and Japan to help it finance projects it wants to build. Traditionally speaking, China, India and Japan are considered the three historic allies of Sri Lanka since the end of WW2. One Galle Face mall is part of the broader One Galle Face area and its main contractors were a Singaporean company and a Chinese company, its developer is Shangri-La Group (Shangri-La Colombo is located next door). As for the Chinese influence in Colombo, the long connection between Sri Lanka and China since the late 20th century which has developed through closer economic and cultural ties since the 2000s and especially during the 2010s has brought a wave of new Chinese immigrants and workers to Colombo. Prior to this, there was a wave of Chinese migrants in the 18th and 19th centuries (just like what happened in other parts of Asia at the time) but they have assimilated into the Sri Lankan society and mostly speak Sinhalese and many have intermarried with Sinhalese Buddhists and now practice Theravada Buddhism. The new Chinese immigrants are similar to the new wave of Chinese immigrants settling in other parts of Asia. These immigrants retain connections with China but consider their new nations of residence to be their new home or their second home. There are also workers from China who are employed by Chinese companies in Sri Lanka. Astoria is located in Kollupitiya which is where a lot of the new Chinese immigrants and workers (and other East Asians) have settled. That's why there are a lot of Chinese businesses in the area. Some of the Chinese restaurant and shop owners in the area have been living in Sri Lanka for decades. A lot of these businesses, while created initially to cater to the new Chinese community, are frequented heavily by a lot of non-Chinese Sri Lankans. You will also find Sri Lankans who work in hospitality in some areas who can speak Chinese. The Chinese influence in Colombo broadly matches the new Chinese influence in other parts of Asia like in some cities of Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar. China is now the dominant nation in Asia so Asia as a whole is strongly connected with China. There are also Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka that have been opened jointly with Chinese Buddhist institutes and Buddhist gifts that have been given to Sri Lanka by China, so the connections run deep. Colombo was always a very cosmopolitan place, especially since the colonial days when Europeans, Chinese, Burmese, Malays, Moors, Gujaratis, Memons, Pathans, Arabs and so on joined the existing Sinhalese and Tamil groups, so the modern Chinese influence adds to the already cosmopolitan nature of the city. Layard's Wharf in Colombo, for example, was designed to reflect the historic culinary traditions of the ethnic groups that historically lived in the area in the 1800s: Sinhalese, Tamil, Chinese and Burgher (Eurasian). That's why the food court features cuisines from across Europe, South Asia, East Asia and Southeast Asia.

Hi Guys I want put some things into context. The average wage in Sri Lanka is about Rs 40,000 a month $150. For Sri Lankans to eat in these posh restaurants is prohibitive. The ones who have the money are mostly people that have relatives living and working abroad sending money back home. With Covid and the Economic crisis the country is digging out from the Ashes. Thanks to India and the IMF 4bn and 2.9bn Sri Lanka is still standing. India and Russia and other SARC countries get visa free entry. These folks are not exactly high spenders. In 2024 the highest number of tourist came from India and Russia. I hope the country can attract the high spending tourist . Cheers Mate from a cold Florida (Born and raised in SL)

I'd argue against this. The average wage in colombo is probably far higher. Maybe around 70k. The rise in software engineers who are paid ridiculous amounts could easily afford high-end restaurants and hotels(for example). I wouldn't say most of them are from families that are sending money from abroad, but a few. If ur earning from Colombo and working for a private company, you can afford these amenities. Sri lanka has a huge wealth inequality. The rich are rich and the poor are poor, so depending on which side u grow from, ur view of life in sl will be different.

@marlonjaimon8325 Bro, your comment is accurate for most parts, but you are way off in saying locals who frequent these establishments have relatives overseas funding them. Not really, could be true for some but NOT all. Most are middle class locals who live and work in the city. Perhaps you have not been back home for while, some city dwellers do have a much better life over here than in the so called developed west, we know what the quality of life is like over there. The the country did suffer in the hands of incompetent politicians, but the people who choose to live here are a much resilient lot who know how to have a good life with what they have.
