I do clearly remember the first time I heard this song in the US when pop radio first started playing this. It was late afternoon on a hot summer day driving back from vacation in Florida. I was in the last 30 minutes from getting home of the 18 hour drive back, so it was on my home town radio station.

Bananarama are an iconic girl band/group from the 80s and are still producing music today in 2020. I’ve been a fan since I was 15 & now I’m 49. They have a HUGE catalogue with many worldwide hits. The wow on their knickers is in reference to the name of the album that this song and many other hits are from. I have way too many favourites from these wonderful woman, so all I’m going to say is watch them all, you won’t be disappointed 😉👍🏾😘❤️🙌🏾❤️🙌🏾❤️🙌🏾

I really like their song “Robert De Niro’s Waiting.” Siobhan Fahey in the blond bob to me was the more fascinating of the three. At one point she was married to Dave Stewart of Eurythmics. Later she formed the group Shakespeare’s Sister with Marcella Detroit. Drama seemed to follow Siobhan wherever she went.

I think that was their charm and made people connect easily with them ever since their earliest days. For instance, they have recounted the anecdote when they first appeared on Top of the Pops performing It Ain't What You Do. They had never been in that show. They didn't know what camera to look into, they didn't really dance but those were the things that precisely made people fall in love with them back in the day.

This is Bananarama's original and best known lineup: Keren Woodward (the brunette), Sara Dallin (the long-haired blonde) and Siobhan Fahey (the short-haired blonde). Keren and Sara have known each other since they were 4 years old and became best friends when they were 13. Sara met Siobhan when they studied at the university to become fashion journalists and became friends. At this time Keren worked as a secretary at the BBC's Pensions department, a job she got because of her outstanding grades in Math. When the three got together it was the time of the punk movement and it was common practice that people that didn't have any background in music just got together and formed their own bands. That's what Bananarama did at the suggestion of Paul Cook, a member of The Sex Pistols. In typical Bananarama style they didn't take themselves seriously and they formed the band just for kicks not even thinking they were gonna make a career out of it. However, after they released their first single in 1981, Aie A Mwana, they got noticed by Terry Hall, a member of The Specials who was now a member of a band called Fun Boy Three. He liked their style and asked them to sing back up for a track of theirs called It Ain't What You Do. This was released in January 1982, got to #4 in the U.K. charts and as they say the rest is history. Siobhan, whose birthday is also in September like yours, at the time they were recording the album where I Heard a Rumour comes from, she was feeling unhappy with the musical direction the band was taking. She felt it was way too poppy and glossy. She was pregnant and got married to Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics and she felt more and more detached from the band up to the point that for many promotional appearances the band did Keren and Sara were the ones who showed up. In January 1988, Siobhan officially left the band, moved to Los Angeles with her family and emerged with Shakespears Sister. The record company pressured the other Bananarama girls to find a replacement as the public perceived them as a trio. They got an old friend of theirs, Jacqui O'Sullivan, to join the band. However, she only lasted 3 years in the band. From 1992 onwards, Bananarama has remained as a duo. They will release in late October their autobiography (I already pre-ordered it as soon as I found out the news). Many people dismiss them as just an all-female pop band but knowing more of their history you realize that they are the original girl power and not the Spice Girls. You can tell even from the way the band was formed. Bananarama also still hold the Guinness Record as the most successful all-female British band of all time. In regards of I Heard a Rumour, ironically it was a bigger hit in the U.S. (#4 in the Hot 100) than in their native U.K. (#14). At some point in your reaction you mentioned something about upbeat music with dark and deep lyrics. Bananarama does have songs like that and the first one that comes to mind is Robert De Niro's Waiting. I won't tell you what the song's about in case you would like to react to it maybe during the week of your birthday with the 80's-themed reactions. Rough Justice is another one. Even Cruel Summer has dark lyrics backed by a seemingly happy tune. I'm sorry for this looooong post but maybe as you can tell I'm a huge Bananarama fan and Bananarama reactions are quite rare to find in KZbin. I got quite excited as soon as I saw this in my notifications. Thank you very much for this reaction. Hope you react to more Bananarama.

The "WOW" stitched on their knickers referred to the name of the album from which this song came. This was Pete Waterman's favourite song, and I would not be very surprised if it remains so. One remarkable things about the Dallin-Fahey-Woodward team is that they sang in unison rather than in harmony, and yet they sounded quite wonderful together. It had to do with the characteristics of their individual voices which, by a fluke, blended together well. After Fahey's departure (to marry Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics) her place was replaced by Jacquie O'Sullivan, whose voice did not make that perfect blend. Bananarama remains an on-going concern as a two-piece group.
