Black Swan is really deep! It's about a creator's fear of losing their passion for art. In this instance, BTS wondering what it would feel like to no longer love music. It's based on a quote by Martha Graham, "A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful." These feelings are reflected in lyrics like "The heart does not beat anymore, when listening to music" "Oh that would be my first death I been always afraid of" "If this can no longer make me cry, If this can no longer make my heart flutter, Perhaps, this will be how I die once" "No song can reach me anymore, I cry out a silent cry". Black Swan is from Map of the Soul: 7, which released early 2020 right before Covid. In 2018 they'd suffered severe burnout and depression, and were so lost and done that they nearly disbanded. I personally feel like this album was them diving deeper into those emotions and their inner selves.

This one is deep. The song is about the fear of a creative person of losing their passion. RM cried a lot writing this, he said. The shadow is based on Karl Jung - basically the higher they fly and the brighter the light, the bigger the shadow. Fear, loss of freedom, etc. Jimin really shone in this video, all the cutaways and the dancing shadow were him.

6:47 black swan is from the album ‘map of the soul: 7’ that they released just before the pandemic, a very introspective album, they look back on their past work and into themselves, they had big plans for the album, a tour, collaborations with different artists around the world to show art for free and more… and then the pandemic happened canceling everything, they were actually supposed to enlist after the tour and promotions of this album

It's their fear to loose their passion for making music. But we all know that situation when we are mentally tired or depressed. The lyrics are so impressive. I love this song so much. 💜 The dance practice video and a live performance of Black Swan are a must watch! Please go deeper in the lyrics.

Repeating words is a deliberate literary device that puts emphasis on something and is called Epizeuxis. In this case, "bump, bump, bump" is the sound of the heartbeat and conveys the heightened sensation of anxiety; and, "jump, jump, jump" deepens the feeling of depression and dark thoughts, adding layers of complexity to the lyrics. In the case of "nah, nah, nah" and "yeah, yeah, yeah" the repetition makes the song accessible to BTS's multinational and multilingual audience where fans from diverse backgrounds can easily sing along, creating a sense of unity and connection. . This MV was filmed at the Los Angeles Theater. “Black Swan” is inspired by the psychological theories of Carl Jung and explores the concept of “Shadow” which addresses the darkest things that exist in all of us and that we hide or repress, for example, our fears and doubts or our prejudices. It is based on the following quote from dancer and choreographer Martha Graham, “a dancer dies twice - once when she stops dancing, and this first death is the most painful”. That's why it's relatable to Tchaikovsky's famous ballet, "Swan Lake", where there is a White Swan (good) and a Black Swan (evil). This song has an essentially deep and personal meaning for BTS, as it refers to the fear of losing their passion for music. That theater is the Los Angeles theater in downtown LA and it’s actually a movie theater that was built in 1931 and the first movie it showed was a Charlie Chaplin film. It’s a beautiful place. I had the wonderful honor to have taken a tour there during sugars tour in LA.

6:40 This is from their album Map of the Soul: 7, which came out in February 2020, literally RIGHT before covid hit. They had a huge world tour plan that was cancelled and everything. After that they wrote and released the album BE (Dynamite is on there), which is all about the pandemic. Then later they released two more English singles to spread happiness. So not all songs in 2020 were to give joy lol.

also shadows are a thing on this album, suga has an entire solo song called interlude: shadow (it has a music video but the music video is shorter, missing one verse so definitely look into both one day, doolsetbangtan is good for lyrics)

In ‘Black Swan,’ BTS steps into the deep, inner side of the self and faces the shadow it has been hiding as an artist. It is the confession of BTS as an artist, who grew up to a global superstar. “A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful.” - Martha Graham. Black Swan is created with dancer Martha Graham’s quote as a motif. Like a dancer faces their first death when they stop dancing, the track contains the fear of the moment where BTS is no longer able to perform on the stage as an artist. Through Black Swan, the members of BTS express that, as they continue to do music more and more, they will face their first death as well if the music fails to touch their hearts or to make them excited. But every time such a moment happens, ‘I’ hear another voice of mine from deep inside, ‘I’ face the Black Swan in me, and, ironically, ‘I’ come to a realization that music is the only thing ‘I’ have. The art film explores the fear of losing sight of what you love, and how you can learn to work alongside the things you struggle with instead of denying or giving in to them.

You are very observant. The song is from their Map of the Soul 7 album released just before the pandemic hit. In Map of the Soul: Persona and this album, they explore the Jungian theory of Map of the Soul which talks about achieving individuation if you recognise all aspects of yourself including your Persona (our public self), Shadow (repressed, dark aspects of ourself) and Ego (conscious self). In Black Swan they compare the loss of love for their craft to death based on a quote from Martha Graham that a dancer dies twice, first when they can no longer dance and this death is more painful. BTS sings about their shadow self, the fear that they will lose their passion for making music. In true BTS style, though, instead of hiding from this fear, they look deeper within themselves and realise that their fear, their shadow, is just part of themselves. They need to face the fear and accept it. Suga points at his shadow and raps that he looked inside and saw himself, and at the end, Jungkook watches his shadow shrink and disappear as he accepts his fear. Throughout the video, their public image is shown when they wear white and they are viewed from the perspective of the audience. Their shadow selves are portrayed when they wear black and they are viewed from the back of the stage or out of the public eye.

When an artist loses the love or ability to create it is like a death. Martha Graham, a dancer, calls it the first death. And a shadow of your previous life hangs over you for the rest of your life to remind you of your loss. Jimin is Suga's shadow. When Jin is in front of all of the mirrors, when he turns, he's not there anymore. At the end, he performer walks away from the stage and his shadow does too.

The whole album reference's Jungain Psychology eg Carl Young with reference to the pychological concerts of Shadow, Persona and Ego and they relate their own live's in reference to those concepts. They are deep thinkers. This is from the Map of the Soul album eg Map of the Soul and Map of the Soul 7

Thank you for the action, i really enjoyed it. This mv was filmed in the Los Angeles Theatre, a very art nouveau venue, really beautiful, ornate and dramatic - it fit very well as the backdrop for Black Swan. 🙏💜

RM is into reading philosophy etc. So you get alot of ideas popping up in their videos. The concept of the shadow self comes from analytical psychology.
