It is a masterpiece, on every level. I expected a good album, but not THIS good. This ranks among my favourite 25 albums of all time, period. Not a single weak track (some better than others, of course), the production is crystal clear, and the BALANCE between, well, everything, is perfect. The growling (never a favorite thing of mine, to be honest) sound delicious (like late period Jens Kidman, but more "melodic") and is juxtaposed with the clean singing with absolute precision. The music is sooo complex (without going overboard) that one can listen to it again and again and again, and still being surprised. Thanks, guys, this was a perfect way to end the year, musically.

I agree. This is the best of their modern albums since Watershed.

Opeth should not be reviewed on one listen, this is dense music that needs time to fully digest. Definitely a welcome return to the heavier end of the spectrum. The last few albums could have been just as good if not better had they included all the tools in the toolbox.

My first experience with OPETH was Ghost Reverie after a 10/10 review from Classic Rock. They were right; and from looking further into them it was the first album that they developed prior to going into the studio.

I respect honest reactions. I like how you didn't pretend to love it just to please your viewers. Thank you. 4/10 seems a bit criminal but that's the beauty of music being subjective. I'd give a 4 to bands like Disturbed or Nickelback but even the worst Opeth album is at least worth a 7. To each their own. I enjoyed your reaction.

It’s the last will and testament of the patriarch. Obviously a man. Not a woman. But you’re right about a lot. The Ghost reference is kinda valid as the guitarist also plays on ghost albums.

I really dig this album. Opeth's best elements are all in here. Brilliant story, superb musicianship and production that rewards repeated listens. There's definitely a Mr Bungle vibe to some of this stuff as well, which is good thing. AOTY contender for me.

Opeth is my favorite band and I've obsessively listened to all of their albums literally hundreds of times, so there was a huge hype for this one. I love ALL their catalogue up to this - Growling or prog rock or whatever, their music has always connected with me. However, this album didn't connect😒(and this is after a good dozen listens)TOO proggy and "look what I can do!", way too staccato and not enough legato, too circus like all over the place with the scene shifts. Almost too ambitious and pretentious I dare say. It definitely sounds like Opeth and it's a masterwork of music from a production and execution standpoint, but it lacks the character and soul I want from the band. For me, I like more breathing room, more long melodic bits, and more "organic" feel in the songs. This one is too Dream Theaterish and all over the place like they're wanking around with everything in the studio they could find. I totally get why many people like it and can see how it scratches that itch for that certain audience. I will say the best part of the album is that it made me appreciate their other 13 albums a lot more. I can see it being a 8/10 for a lot of people, but its 5/10 for me🤷♂Done listening to it for a while, will revisit in a few weeks maybe and see how it holds up✌🧝🌳

My view and ears on listening to this album. I let myself drift away. The ambience and melding reality with non reality
@jasonashley98533 күн бұрын
I think if you give it more listens you will hear similarities to the old Opeth. I mean, for god sake, Blackwater Park title track has 2+ minutes of meandering before getting really heavy. Album is a 8/10 for me. I've settled there after several listens. §5 is my favorite track, and the last 2 minutes are insanely good. Wish it was a longer song tho.

I haven't watched the video yet but I get the feeling this album is not going to click for her, just based on the kind of metal she's made her channel the focus of I mean, it's theatrical prog rock storytelling with metal elements, not straight up death metal from the old days. No one is going to get it on the first listen.

I'm glad everyone likes it. For me, it feels like the music was written around the lyrics and there's no vocal melodies at all, just clunky forced vocals. The music is superb, but its missing the magic.
@davidburns62844 күн бұрын
I definitely wanted it to be heavier, but I still enjoy it and it could be a grower, for sure. It does get a little too proggy and goofy for me at times. Tracks 1, 5 and 6 are fantastic.

Opeth's output was flawless until 2005 then inconsistancies started to creep into their heavier material. Music meanders without actually getting anywhere. Lyrics became less poetical and gross. Whilst the latest album is masterly crafted and a fantastic piece of art, it leans more into Watershed/Ghost Reveries than Still Life and Blackwater Park, which is unfortunately when i started to dislike some of their songs.

...or, it's simply not for you. And that's okay. It's very likely there are albums you love, that others would have zero interest in listening to. That doesn't make the album bad, it just means you have different taste, and isn't that what makes the world interesting?
