I'm glad you checked out the music of Rush. There are many other comments that will tell you more about the band. This started as a small reply to another comment but I might as well write some more. I saw a comment that said the pop sound in Spirit of Radio is because they needed to make a "radio friendly" record. They didn't need to make a "radio friendly" record with Permanent Waves (the album with The Spirit of Radio) though. They just wanted to try something else after the full-on prog rock albums. Hemispheres (the album before Permanent Waves) was their ultimate prog album and it was really hard to make. They needed a change at the time. Rush was always going forward with their music and that's one of the things I like about them. By that time they were influenced by bands such as The Police and they brought a lot of new spices to their sound during those years. Permanent waves still has prog rock in it. I think the most progressive songs on that album are "Jacob's Ladder" and "Natural Science". Both are a bit longer songs and not quite radio friendly at all. You could say that The Spirit of Radio isn't very radio friendly as well. The lyrics of the song deal with some good and bad sides of Radio and commercialism. A good example of this is the second verse. I might as well write it here: "All this machinery making modern music can still be open-hearted. Not so coldly charted, it's really just a question of your honesty, yeah, your honesty. One likes to believe in the freedom of music but glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity, yeah." Rush definitely had integrity. They didn't compromise with their music. I really like Geddy's bass playing and I like his singing as well. He also has a great way of using synthesizers. Alex Lifeson's guitar playing is always great and exactly what the songs need. Neil Peart is the one who really inspired me when I started to play the drums. He was a fantastic drummer and a lyricist. Thank you Neil Peart for everything.

Finally a little bit of love for John Rutsey. His drums on the first album worked for what they were. A 3 pc power trio. And if you've seen any of the old footage he played a front and center role in the stage presentation. Of course they evolved and Neil took things to the stratosphere but John was there at the beginning and should never be forgotten. R.I.P John.

LOL. Geddy's vocals. Back in the 70's when I got into Rush, I had some trouble getting into his high vocal range too. By the time they got to songs like "The Spirit of Radio" Geddy began to sing in a slightly lower register and I really loved his sound. Over the years I've come to really appreciate his early higher pitched stuff. He really is a great singer.

It's hard to define prog rock in just a short reaction, but some of the things I consider that define prog rock (I stress it's my view, because some may find other elements more important): - Use of complex elements (like odd time signatures (7/8, 5/4 etc. etc.), complex rhythms, lots of notes in one bar etc.). In the Rush songs you can hear that a few times. - Use of more styles, although rock is the basis, there's no limit to what other genres can be incorparated. Classical music often happens, but like in Spirit of Radio you have a reggae part. - Use of different song structures, whereas pop often consistes of verses, a chorus and maybe a bridge, a prog rock song can have many parts. Often a verse-chorus can form the basis, but many more parts can be added. - Long instrumental sections, while pop music might a have short intro's, interludes and maybe an instrumental section with a solo of one of the instruments, prog rock can have long instrumental sections. Sometimes even longer then the sung parts. Songs can be entirely instrumental also. - Songs often tell a story, fantasy or SF is often used but many many more narritive genres are to be found (like in these songs). Rush has done this for example in 2112 or Hemispheres. - Songs can be very long (10 to 20 minutes is not an exception) or an album form a whole, what we call a concept album, consisting of many songs that form one story. - Use of all kinds of instruments. Rush started as a 3 piece rock band, but in mid 70's they started using synths (and remained a 3 piece band though). - Overall, there is a drive to be more original, and often the above elements are ingredients to achieve that. Although prog stands progressive, prog rock is not always "progressive" in the literal sense. Bands from the 70's like Genesis, Yes, King Crimson and Rush were pioneers. Modern prog rock bands often continue on that path. Some say that for that modern prog is not progressive anymore. I personally think you should take "prog(ressive)" not too literal in that sense. Even though I still think modern prog bands often can "progress" in some way and be original. If you want to get into prog, I think Rush (especially '76-'81 period) is a good start, but als Yes, Genesis ('70's era), King Crimson, Marillion, Pink Floyd, Dream Theater (more metal oriented) are some nice bands to explore more. PS: Neil Peart, the drummer of Rush (who recenly died unfortanetely) is one of the greatest drummers in the world! Just me opinion of course ;-)

When Rush started in the 70's, they were huge fans of Led Zeppelin & Cream, so that came across in their early work... they incorporated influences like early Genesis in their first big album '2112' in 1976... after that, Rush put more layers & percussion in their music. By 1980, they wanted a break from complex songwriting, and became fans of UK new wave music like The Police and The Clash... that resulted in 'The spirit of radio' and more keyboards being thrown in, more electronic percussions, which gave them a huge hit album 'Moving pictures' in 1981. After 1982, the influence of UK synth pop from Duran Duran and Depeche Mode in the 80's made Rush go in a keyboard-heavy electronic musical direction. By 1989, guitarist Alex Lifeson got fed up w/ keyboards & demanded the guitars be brought back... by 1993, the grunge rock-era brought Rush back to heavy guitars and bass grooves.

I respect your first response to the different Rush sounds...and Geddy Lee has a voice to get used to, but it works!...I recommend 'Xanadu' from 1977, the live performance especially...a midway between the songs reviewed here, because in my opinion this is where Rush completely went on their journey to live up to a 3 man band performance...but I must say as well that "2112" was magic in its storytelling and crazy good originality.

If you like Rush and Black Sabbath, listen to “Budgie” they are a perfect mix of the two.

Breadfan! Pyramids! I haven't listened to Budgie in ages. I must remedy this at once.

That would be awesome! They are one of the pioneers of Heavy Metal yet they don't really get enough attention sadly...
