What helped me was remembering that the other person was fighting to protect his family. He didn't hate me personally, we are an invading force that was coming into his country. If I was in his situation I sure as heck would be doing the same thing. Regardless of what party the nation's leader was. I'm not fighting for them, im fighting to protect my family.

Sabaton is from Sweden, formed in 1999, most of their songs are about Military History. They tell the story without taking sides. Lead singer Joakim Broden and bassist Par Sundstrom are the primary songwriters, and the only original members left. Chris Rorland and Tommy Johansson on guitar and drummer Hannes van Dahl (Floor's Hubby) round out the current lineup. 10 albums to date, this is from the 7th, Heroes in 2014. Yarnhub does a great job with the animation. The Mom, Jovita Theren-Stigler, is active on KZbin, and sometimes leaves comments on reactions to this song. One thing that wasn't mentioned, in the article you read in the prelude, is that Franz's commander had previously told them that anyone shooting a man in a parachute would be shot by him, Honor in the Skies. Franz felt that shooting a plane so badly damaged ,and unable to fight back, was akin to that. A deep rabbit hole with this band. Try the videos for Christmas truce or Bismarck. And more animated story videos for Night Witches, The Red Baron, and Lady of the Dark.
@williamthomas7509

that's one of the best explanations I've seen of where Franz learned his mercy and heroism. He may not have gotten the Knight's Cross but he earned so much more by giving mercy.

Welcome to Sabaton. So glad you decided to give them a try. These guys are so great. I first heard them when they dropped "Christmas Truce" and haven't looked back. They led me to Nightwish and again blown away. Hope you continue to listen to them. I don't think you will be disappointed. Also, their Sabaton History channel is a good one to watch. They go into the songs and the history that they base them on. They have single handedly brought important history to many. Because if we forget what has come before we risk repeating the same mistakes.

I just wanted to join the crowd and welcome you to the rabbit hole that is Sabaton. You already got a lot of information and suggests for songs to check, so I will only suggest one must see song 'En livstid i krig' live from the Great Tour in Gothenburg. Its in Swedish but use subtitles. And if you want to learn more about the events in their songs, check out their official Sabaton History Channel. Good reaction!

As has been mentioned, Sabaton is quite connected to Nightwish because their drummer Hannes Van Dahl is married to Floor Jansen. There is another member of Sabaton who is ABSOLUTELY worth looking into, and that would be their guitarist. His name Tommy Johansson. He has his own band called Majestica, and he has started doing covers every Friday on his own youtube channel. He has a very power-metal style of singing but is similar to Floor in that he can sing whatever the hell he wants and crush it in the process, and he's also a multi-instrumentalist. He produces the music on all of his covers himself and even some of Floor's channel covers, particularly her Disney ones. He's got upwards of 60 covers on his channel by now and releases a new one every Friday, so if you add him to your rotation, you'll be busy with plenty to work with. I won't suggest any one specific song of his because he has so many covers, it'd be better if you pick one that catches your eye.

Nightwish Army South Germany Division Yes ! Yes ! Yes!...This is my Number 1 Song from Sabaton.....Thank you, Debbie Adam Makos immortalized this story in a book. Its title: "A higher call". It tells the story of the two men, not just the incident itself, but everything that happened before and after. By the way, on December 20, 2023, i.e. this year, this event will be celebrated for the 80th time. A B-17F with the markings of the 379th Bomber Group flies in the USA as a museum aircraft. As far as I know, it's not the original "Ye Olde Pup", but an identical aircraft that takes on this role today. You can also find videos about it on YT. Thank you again for choosing this video. Stigler's first CO told him and his squadron mates that if he (the CO) ever heard of them shooting at something that wasn't a threat that he (again the CO) would shoot them personally. That stuck with Stigler and when seeing how damaged the Ye Olde Pub was, saw that it wasn't a threat. Yes he did risk the Knights cross and his own life to escort a complete stranger out of harms way. There were some truly amazing heroes on both sides of the war in WWII.

I have a photo my father took. He was working on his plane when two friends were leaving on a mission. They are smiling as they look at him. My dad cherished the photo. That crew didn't come home. My dad flew C-47 but occasionally filled in on B-17. After the war many were shocked that my dad loved to go to Germany. His reply they are great friendly people. Hitler and his Nazi's were the problem. Dad recognized the everyday solider and people of Germany had been ruled by a madman. So may of that generation are gone now, my father 30 years. Too many of the later generations have failed to live up to the gift of freedom and humanity given to us by them.

Sabaton put on a great show. At their "Great War" show at Wembley they were backed by Apocalyptica who had done a cover of one of their songs. So they brought them on to play that song with them. Having planned that for the show they decided there was no point just coming on for one song especially as it wasn't the last in the set, So we had Sabaton and Apocalyptica both on stage for several songs.

@TheQuestionQueens: Thank you so much for reacting to this. This song, as do others, show us that even on the darkest of days, in the darkest of times, that we always have the chance to show our humanity to our fellow man. That as long as there's a chance for hope and empathy and compassion, especially in the hellish environment of a warzone, that the light of all that is good hasn't gone out. While it may be low, while it may flicker, it hasn't died. And because it hasn't, we always have a chance to do the right thing. As a next reaction, I highly recommend either Christmas Truce or Night Witches, though Christmas Truce may invite the ninjas of the Onion clan to take over your house and your reaction before you know it, lol. (Plus, there's even a special vocal treat at the end of Christmas Truce, but to know what it is, you'll have to react to the video!)

That kind of honor and heroism lives forever. It's amazing to see the ripple effect throughout history, isn't it? A Luftwaffe fighter pilot saves a B-17, the children and grandchildren of the surviving crew members actually meet Franz. Then a metal band writes a powerful song about the whole thing, and the Stigler family gets to see the band immortalize their father/grandfather in concert. You just can't make that sh-t up.

I have to take my hat off to this Nazi pilot who put the lives of those on the other side before his own, such an act deserves the greatest medals of honor in existence in my opinion. Such a show of mercy is one of the greatest acts that would require more because this act required a lot of courage from a Nazi pilot because he knew for sure the danger that by flying close to an enemy plane he could have been shot down as a traitor and court-martialed for a war crime and sentenced to death! 🎖🎖👍👍✈✈ I don''t think it was easy for this Nazi pilot to keep silent about the 50-year amnesty for the coalition plane, but he certainly knew the consequences if the matter came out because martial law was merciless towards traitors.

As someone has already said, my absolute favourite part of this amazing story was the fact that Charlie invited Franz to an airfield one day and when the hangar door opened a huge number of people were there. Kids, parents, aunts and uncles, grandparents. Franz at first felt like he didn't belong, until Charlie pointed out that every single person there owed their literal existence solely to him, as all the people were the wives, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of the men he saved in that bomber that day. Just imagine a multitude of generations of multiple families that will forever more owe their existence to just one man and his decision that one day to keep his humanity intact and not get an easy kill, which would have earned him a Knights Cross - one of the highest medals the Germans gave out at that time to airmen. Not many families can claim their entire familial existence is down to a single man, making a single decision in one single moment on one single particular day - but those bomber crew survivors families can. Epic stuff!! I love stories like this that humanise wars and go beyond the statistics.

The song becomes a hundred times better once you know the story behind it (really true of most Sabaton songs). (And I got emotional too ;) )

Why are you chopping so many onions in here, Debbie? It has been several listens now since this one hit me like that; but your reading the story in the other video combined with their animation really makes their heroism shine. As usual, another great reaction. Thanks!

Sabaton should be played in History classes everywhere! You should check out "Night Witches" by Sabaton. I just wish they would write one about Lydia Litvyak - "The White Rose (actually a lilly) of Stalingrad" - 12-kill woman ace during the Great Patriotic War/WW2. My cousin shot down an Argentine fighter in 1982. He was glad to see a parachute - "the plane is one thing, the man inside another thing completely". Honour and chivalry are not dead but unfortunately very rare. p.s. another risk Franz took was flying so close to the B-17 - another pilot in charge of Ye Olde Pub might have rammed him!

Franz Stigler served under a commander at one point who said he would personally killing any pilot he saw shooting at parachuting soldiers/airmen. Stigler saw the damaged bomber as their parachute. The bomber never fired at Zigler because their guns were stuck frozen, so he saw them as no threat at all. He was one kill away from recieving the Knight's Cross (becoming an Ace).

One of the last genuine acts of actual chivalry, the honour code of knights, it's deeply effecting, since you've covered this Christmas truce has to be next but the official music video version which features a stunning vocal cameo in the end credits

The boys of SABATON work hard to get the historical facts right. It's a beautiful one mix of history lessons and powerful metal. There is no Band that tells stories like SABATON. At the end the Daughter of Franz Stigler....tears ran down my cheeks 😢😢 *No Bullets Fly* An emotional story ✨ FLOOR is also a Fan of SABATON because she is married to Drummer 🥁Hannes van Dahl. 😍 Together they live in Sweden with their daughter Freja. NIGHTWISH 🇫🇮 and SABATON 🇸🇪 are good friends. 🤘🎸 The Christmas Song *Christmas Truce* Is worth watching... All band members play a role in this fantastic Video.. End credit vocals (music video) by FLOOR JANSEN 🌸 Please 🙏 more NIGHTWISH AND SABATON Thank you dear Debby 💖 Love from ❤️ the Netherlands 🇳🇱🌷

Good morning Debbie. I have watched this video so many times I've lost count. Once again I failed to make it through with dry eyes. Hope you will find time to react to other Sabaton songs. I mentioned a few weeks back that Floor is married to Hannes who is the Sabaton drummer. Tissues anyone? ❤

When you have animated STORY video you will get the story as you watch it. So you should do more of those. But when you are doing Christmas truce you should choose the official music video and here you have a link kzbin.info/www/bejne/foHHeZ5-qNF5f7c its fantastic

So many great Sabaton songs about tragic stories. One that really hits home is The Price of a Mile, and while the official video is great, I like a fan made video of that song containing scenes from a film about Passchendaele, it REALLY hits home kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJLSaIF5n6qZqrs

You need to get the background on Sabaton that you just listened to. Sabaton is a Swedish power metal band from Falun, which was formed in 1999. The band's songs are inspired by various historical wars. Even the band name is military inspired, as Sabaton is also the name of the part of the armor that covers the foot So all the muskies are based on military historical events around the world.
