To me, Jimmy is about Maynard's adult self embracing his hurting inner child, who has felt alone and trapped since the trauma of his mother's aneurysm at age 11. Maynard realizes that the pain he feels has acted as a wall separating his adult self from the inner child that needs him. So this song is in part an expression of that pain in an effort to take down that wall and reunite these two parts of himself. Which I think ties well into one of the album themes you've identified: Maynard trying to heal the wounds in himself that will block him from being the parent he wants to be to his child.

Part of Maynard's psyche was frozen at 11 years old, when the traumatic event of his mothers aneurysm and paralysis. His mother could not care for him so he was left to live with his father and step mother. Going home, coming home, is all about reintegrating that lost 11 year old into his psyche. Coming to terms with the trauma that happened to him at 11. His mother was paralyzed but lived for another 10,000 days (27.3 years) confined to a wheel chair.

11 is the number of magick, because It's the uniting of the microcosm (pentagram - 5) and macrocosm (hexagram - 6). It's the hermetic great work, the alchemical philosopher's stone, the thelemic abrahadabra etc. That 2nd verse: "Moving me with a sound, opening me within a gesture, drawing me down and in, showing me where it all began - 11" is a description of a magick ritual.
@MaynardsSpaceship2 жыл бұрын
@@Qliphirot Yes, it is. I wouldn't have attributed the reference of ceremonial ritual magick to this song, due to it being more of Danny's thing. Perhaps Maynard picked his brain and incorporated the findings into lyrical content. Very cool. :)
@Qliphirot2 жыл бұрын
@@MaynardsSpaceship I'm sure he dabbled in that journey, there are too many other references through his lyrics. It's not even that hidden in the AEnima record if you are into this view, because not only the songs are making these references but in the linear notes they're literally talking about magick and even more explicit than that there are cd and vinyl pressings showing magik sigils from a certain famous grimoire. Danny Carey certainly presented a different view of the cosmos to a confused Maynard.

Maynard isn't his given name. His given name was James Herbert Keenan. Great interpretation again. Glad you looked into it a little as this song requires some background. This song is utterly tragic. It's like both he and his mother were paralysed that day. Her physically and "Jimmy" emotionally. The "face of your own stability" to me is Maynard asking what it was like having God turn his back on her. I love the line "I wish that I could see you. Turn and run to play. Dreams are fading. Carry my ancient soul". It's a childhood lost. A boy forced to grow up at a young age and in a sense robbed. He is starting to forget what it was before that time. It's taken him stopping running away and "going home" to confront the emotion. He may not move on in this song but he begins the journey. A ray of hope in all the tragedy this song is
@_bats_2 жыл бұрын
I see a strong connection between this song and Third Eye. They come from different perspectives somewhat, but I think they're both fundamentally about Maynard confronting his child-self in some way. I think the light he describes in "Jimmy" is this kind of youthful hopefulness that he wishes he could go back and encourage to grow, sort of saving his younger self from the trauma he was going through by guiding him toward his best qualities. But at the same time, I think he's looking for guidance from his own youthful self, now that he's so lost and angry as an adult. "Jimmy" is the more concrete of the two as it's directly tied to the trauma of his mother's illness and decline, while "Third Eye" is the more spiritual of the two renditions of (attempted) reconnecting of the young and adult Maynards.

Jimmy and intermission was the first introduction to Tool I had. It was probably 2000-2001 ish in English class. At that time mp3 players were hot - it's hard to explain what it's like when digital cameras and mp3 players first came out.. they sucked you could only hold like 8-12 songs on the first one I had. But it was still awesome at the time because it was new and the freedom most importantly, was new. We both had our flashy hot new early 2000's mp3 players (mine was a Rio) he brought his in with these 2 songs and made me listen to them during break because it was "funny". Needless to say the fucking groove of Jimmy fucked me for life. I've been to 3 Tool concerts and can play half the songs on bass LOL.

Love how you react and break down the lyrics. I think you did a pretty damn good job interpreting it before looking up an explanation. I kind of view it as a therapy session that Maynard has speaking with his younger self. I imagine his childhood ended when his mother had the aneurysm and he is trying to keep that part of himself alive and reconnect. "Til 1 and 1 are 1", bringing his childhood back into his current life in some way. Aenema is really about change and progressing where I feel like Undertow was more about being stuck.

I'll try to relate the story of this song as I understand it from Maynard's perspective. Of course, these lyrics are vague and mysterious so you can always feel about the song however you want to. His mother suffered her aneurysm when he was 11. Since she could no longer care for him, he was forced to go and live with his father. He and his father did not get along at all. This was talked about in the song "H." where he referred to the toxic influence of his father as "the snake". This song seems to be saying that he, the true him, was frozen in time when he left his mother and his true self could not exist again until he returned to his mother. His true home. The best line in this song that always hits me: "I'll move to heal as soon as pain allows so we can reunite and both move on together."

Yeah as others have said "jimmy" is "james," which is Maynards first name, i think. I really think the song is about how he lost a part of himself at age 11 due to reasons indicated in other comments, and he is speaking about recovering a piece of himself that was left behind or frozen in time. He is speaking about that aspect of himself in the 3rd person to illustrate his internal estrangement. He formed himself into a psuedo self over time and through the death of that false self (see H) he is recovering the essence of what he had been as a child - "going back home." This song really meshes well with "Third Eye," which I believe is about the same process he speaks about here in Jimmy.

Yay, this is my favorite song on Aenima. You've been on the right track with what most of these songs are generally about - far better than I understood them for years at first. Excited to hear your upcoming thoughts on the entire Lateralus album's lyrics - truly timeless wisdom and art. As others have stated, it is said that he was 11 when Judith was paralyzed. I've never tried to personally verify that, but it's definitely like a communication with his inner child, or a part of his psyche that is trapped in a child's mind-frame due to some kind of trauma. I've listened to this song for years - I even played it as a cover long ago but just never really thought about the timing of it, and that eerily beautiful bridge where the lyrics kind of tie everything together can be counted in 11s (while the rest of the song is in 10s.) It is to this day, one of my favorites by them. Also listening to the carnival-esque intro right into jimmy as was intended (rather than pausing for the video to switch) makes it more obvious that it's the same riff, and cuts it off so abruptly that it's like this light-hearted child-like nature was suddenly ripped away, and what is left is a familiar but much darker nature.

The melody of Intermission is the same as the opening of Jimmy. The organ grinder frivolity of Intermission juxtaposed with the serious content and delivery of Jimmy just shows how a melody can feel drastically different in your intent or meaning. I've never really seen them discuss it but as an amateur musician sometimes you write a piece of music or a riff and think it's cool and then realize upon a later listen that it sounds like this or that. Maybe this was the case that when jamming and messing around it had a light hearted carnival like sound and they decided to record a version of that to butt up against Jimmy. Kind of a palate cleanser with foreshadowing. Spoiler for real reaction:They do this same thing later in the album on Pushit. The opening violins not only mimic the pitch of main riff they also sound like flies. I also have thought the innocent carefree feel of Intermission reflects a childlike whimsical atmosphere before all that gets upended in the story of Jimmy and the sadness of basically losing the mother he knew up to that point. Like I said I've never heard the band elaborate on the relevance of Intermission this is just my observation. Love your thoughtful reactions.
@johnseward29342 жыл бұрын
I've also come to think that the feel of Intermission, besides a point of contrast to Jimmy for the reasons you stated, are meant to bring you back to a sense of childhood, when you were 11.
@thelieinbelieve65942 жыл бұрын
Just wanted to add. Most of his lyrics as you've noticed and touched upon are about letting go of all that anger, pain and resentment from this moment in his life. The baggage that tragedy left transformed him into something unrecognizable to his 11 year old self. And a lot of times you don't see that for what it is until way later in life. With emotional trauma it usually just gets repressed/buried until a later time, only revealing itself in certain behavior which is usually unhealthy. This song is very important in his healing because he pinpoints the origin of all his sorrow and is trying to come to terms, to understand who he was, accept what happened and how it affected him and move forward and become a more whole healthy person. It's an extraordinary journey and you get to see his progression through the albums. And I think it's very generous of him to allow us to share his personal experiences. We all have these types of things to overcome to different degrees, that's why it's so relatable and emotional. I know that him sharing this has helped many others find their own catharsis and heal. I know it has for me. It's been like musical therapy, lol.

In terms of lyrical content, it's probably the best I've heard so far from them but it probably doesn't get as much love because it's more repetitive than their other songs. I love it though 💯

Soul Retrieval. Shamanic journey to obtain a piece of one’s soul that was lost during a time of trauma. In his book A Perfect Union of Contrary Things, he mentions being invited to a peyote ceremony on a Native American reservation. I wonder if that was the intention of that journey. I believe it was right before this album was written/ released.

The back half of this record is amazing. You obviously know when to pair songs. The next three songs have pairs to them. Track 10 and 11 go together Track 12 and 13 go together Track 14 and 15 go together

I always took Intermission as a nod to Monty Python, it sounds like the intermission music in Holy Grail to the tune of Jimmy. I didn’t put this together until all of the Tool catalog went online right before Fear Inoculum released. I had been playing APC’s Stone and Echo: Live at Red Rocks album and Maynard uses a MP quote during the band introductions before the encores.

Yeah, the carnival music reminds me of a carefree childhood, then BAM! S##t gets real. I may be mistaken, but I think Maynard's mother sent him to live with his dad, so that might be another reason why he mentions going "home".

Once again fantastic review brother, and once again another song representing "evolving"....NOTE...Only his mother called him "Jimmy"...this album truly is setting you up and set us up originally to see the next phase of TooL (bro Lateralus is gonna bend you) This was Maynard without a doubt evolving as a man but before he could move on he needed to deal with the pain and fear of that moment he lost his mothers guidance, as a scared 11 year old he never grieved, he never dealt with that pain, he buried it as he was passed around from relatives and friends until he landed back with his father in Grand Rapids (read the book "The Perfect Union of Contrary Things") It's heavily addressed.....thee most cerebral band ever and the greatest Rock Lyricist of all time!

Dead Ohio sky references that Keenan spent some time in Ravenna, OH. The Ravenna military arsenal site was chosen because it supposedly had more cloudy days than any other place in the country giving it protective cover from enemy detection. Lake effect cloud cover from the Great Lakes…

Jimmy, always one of my favs. Can’t wait for Pushit. Maynard’s adult self going back to his 11 year old self when his mother was paralyzed

The thing about this song is that it switches perspectives in the middle of the song. The first half is coming from his adult self, looking back at the time when his mother had an anyuerism at age eleven and how that impacted him. The second half his about his mother's POV as a woman of faith. Her undying faith gives him hope. "Hold your light, Eleven" and "So glow child, glow" is her telling him to hold his light up so she can see him as she slowly fades away. Fucking heartbreaking.

You're definitively ready for Wing for Marie and 10000 days, the extremely emotional end of the Maynard Mother journey. 🤟 Tx

Great reaction as usual Skullz! Not wanting to be a spoiler but the next full song Pushit is a masterpiece and a journey in my opinion. Very much looking forward to your reaction. Highly recommend listening or reacting to the salival Pushit version afterwards. They revisit the song and really do some beautiful changes to “see it under a different light” to quote Maynard.

Jimmy is young Maynard, 11 is the age of the child (him as a child) he had to reconcile with. James and Jimmy came together (1 & 1 are 1 - 11) and the road to healing began.

I think it will be for you, as it was for me. First, the song got a bit lost in the rest of the album (as a first listen as I remember it, buying the CD). But every listen to the brilliance of Maynards lyrics in this song makes it even more impressive. It's now one of my favorites and I listen to it a lot. By the way, his "dealing with it finally" leads to the anger in Judith.
