recorded in one take! reading the lyrics off a napkin! The song reached #2 on the charts in 1971. Karen Carpenter only 21 years old at the time!

Karen is considered the "Best female voice" of all time. This was a live recording too. She was known for her perfect pitch, perfect beat, and had that "thing" in her voice that touched those who heard her sing. 50 years after her death, she is still has the Best Voice.

I grew up in the 60s and early 70s. The music back then was people had real talent. They played instruments and could sing. No autotune and studio tricks. They told stories and you could understand what the song was about. I'm grateful I grew up when I did.

Luther Vandross loved the Carpenters. He recorded his version of this song as an homage to Karen soon after her death. That might be the reason it is familiar to you.

karen was a perfect example to any singer....you do not need to go to glass shattering extremes to show your abilities....here range was perfect for conveying emotion....plus you can understand EVERY word ...something thats difficult with todays artists
@tomschmitz-dj1fg8 ай бұрын
that's because she was the ultimate storyteller and ultimate VOCALIST (not just a singer) who was the epitome of a voice that sang to you NOT at you... a talent the vast majority of men and women "singers" today do not comprehend or have the ability to do so.

Song was a idea by Rita Coolidge & then Deaney & Bonnie co wrote it with Leone Russell. They recorded it & got to #84 on the charts in 1969. Richard Carpenter heard Bette Midler sing it on the tonight show so he arranged his version of it & was recorded in 1 take (which was normal for Karen Carpenter) It became a #2 hit song on the Bill board charts in 1971 & what really made this song popular. Luther Vandross recorded it in honor of Karen Carpenter in the 1983 as tribute to Karen after her death. It reached #5 for Luther on the R & B chart.
