"I'll take the pain... Give me the truth..." Very powerful. I resonate with every fiber of my body throughout this song and it culminates with Demi screaming out that note at the end. The church choir, almost gospel, towards the end is also very powerful and the pain in Demi's voice gives me chills. It's a song close to my heart and always will be. Actually the bipolar thing was a misdiagnose , she doesn't have bipolar disorder. What she does have is a incredible ability to transmit with her voice along with the truth in her lyrics. You should react to some of her live performances, she has an amazing voice! Her live "father" performance is definitively one of my favorites and I think wou will love it, almost impossible to watch it without getting emotional; also "Anyone" at the grammys is incredibly moving, "dancing with the devil" on tiny desk concert... "Skin of my teeth" and "substance" on Jimmy Fallon have some great vocals too. And she actually has powerful ballads like "love of a daughter", with really tough lyrics.

I thought the same as you. I was sure that I'd heard more pop style songs and just assumed she just wasn't anything that special. This is an amazing song, I'll have to check out more of her stuff. Did she just change her style? Maybe she needed to do the more mainstream stuff to get to a level of popularity where she could do more what she wanted to do and not what she was told to by her record label. This song has a very bluesy, almost gospel sound to it.

You should watch the live performance of this at the Billboard Women in Music event; it's incredibly powerful. Demi's released some other great ballads like Tell Me You Love Me, Anyone, Skyscraper, etc that you should check out as well. I do think what's set them a apart from their contemporaries is her ability to emote. None of the other popstars that came out when they did can pack this kind of emotional punch outside of Adele.
