It is most definitely not an anti-cocaine song lol. He was an insane cocaine and heroin addict when he released this. He after the fact and many years later tried saying this was anti-cocaine, but at the time of release this was a very pro-cocaine song written for that specific intent by J.J. Cale.

For a 68 year old like me it's half difficult and half funny to hear someone not know Eric Clapton's work given how long he's been a rocker and how many bands, besides his own, that he's been in and the number of famous songs he's recorded and more. But the massive age difference thing would explain it. Clapton has toured for over 50 years, covering 58 countries across six continents. He has played for over two billion people in more than 3,000 concerts so far. His extensive touring experience includes over 200 performances at London’s Royal Albert Hall and more than 50 concerts at Madison Square Garden. Clapton’s albums and songs have received a total of 80 gold, platinum, multi-platinum, and diamond sales awards by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Eric Clapton has been awarded 17 Grammys since 1972, including an honorary lifetime achievement award in 2006. He has won these awards for his solo work and also shared them for collaborations with other artists such as B.B. King, Carlos Santana, Bob Dylan, Ravi Shankar, etc. Eric Clapton has Played in 9 Bands. Clapton has released 27 studio albums. After the launch of his professional career with The Yardbirds in 1963, he played with nine bands which are listed below. The Roosters Casey Jones and The Engineers The Yardbirds John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers Cream Delaney & Bonnie & Friends Blind Faith Derek & The Dominos Legends

I had the honour to see him in the Royal Albert Hall in the beginning of the nineties. First class with his album Unplugged. Seems that you're talking about his song "Tears in heaven" where he explaines his hard time loosing his son. He went throug a very hard time and he spoke very clear in an interview in US - Television. He is one of the guitar-kings. If you like, check out J.J. As a teenager from Central Europe, he discovered the quiet, sensitive guitarist J.J. Cale (AFTER MIDNIGHT is also by him), the bluesy John Hiatt, the songwriter Jackson Browne ... . His laid-back style is reminiscent of Billie Holiday's style, which Cale says inspired him. The joint album The Road to Escondido with Clapton was deservedly awarded a Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album in 2008.✌👍

New subscriber here and really love your reactions. Eric Clapton is many years sober now. Back in the 70's and early 80's cocaine was everywhere around Los Angeles and many big cities. So, historically speaking this song was kind of an anthem to those times when so many people had access to it. For better or worse. A great song.

I'm a bit late coming to this party, but Clapton is my idol. This song when written took on a bit of a different meaning. However, since that time in the 70s, Clapton has set up the Cross Roads rehabilitation centre for addiction. I think the song when thought about in the perspective of addiction and the negative connotations with drugs, it takes on a different meaning. Brit, I'd you read this, react to more Clapton, but listen to some of his blues work. He's played with some of the greats like BB King and Albert King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, etc... He's put out decades of epic music.

If your first experience with Eric Clapton was his song Tears In Heaven (about his son's death) then it's understandable that you would be shocked by this. TIH was the departure. This is his wheel house. This is one of the original bad boys from the 60's wild child days. He was into heroin, coke, acid, alcohol. He's friends with The Stones, The Beatles, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, VanHalen, actually they all look up to him. He's fascinated with old-school "blues" music. He looks up to Howlin' Wolf, BB King, Buddy Guy, Robert Johnson. He tries, magnificently, to emulate their sound and stage perosnae. Enjoy your journey as you discover the man they called "God."

This song is not what it appears to be at first blush. It's an endorsement of cocaine.. Eric sings about the seductive qualities of the drug and then the singers say "dirty cocaine." Clapton is the king of blues rock, one of the top 2-3 guitar players of all time. Eric also is a recovered drug addict and alcoholic - and built a recovery treatment facility in the Bahamas.

Eric had a turbulent life with drugs & alcohol during his famous career. He got sober many years ago , and he has spent enormous $$ helping others get sober. His live performances are amazing.. his famous concert series called " Crossroads Guitar Festival " is lined with all the great guitarists of the world. The proceeds go to his charity that continues to help musicians struggling with addiction. Any song from these concerts would be great for you to react to , but I recommend "Little Queen Of Spades" .. featuring Eric Clapton , Derek Trucks , Chris Stainton and others. You have to understand that during his generation of making music, cocoa was everywhere... hey, it was in the original recipe for Coca Cola! 😁

I liked his earlier versions, especially this studio one (kzbin.info/www/bejne/l3eogXx-aa6ka5o ). It's a little slower, the vocals AND the music is slower and more controlled, which gives the song a much cooler 😎vibe. The lead guitar solos are also much better, more cohesive and show the reason why Eric is nicknamed "Slowhand" and considered 1 of the best guitarists in history ... not because of complexity or speed, but because of his understanding of what sounds good. Here's a link to a 1985 version (kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6nTqHmjiceHb6M ) that's pretty sweet.
