I still get goosebumps seeing these live performances and I'll occasionally feel myself welling up with tears thinking about what should have been. Still, it does my heart good to see these younger generations discovering SRV for the 1st time. I read somewhere once that God decided to take Stevie from us early because he wanted guitar lessons, lol.

You need to watch Texas Flood live at the El Mocombo, by Stevie Ray Vaughan. It is arguably the greatest piece of live music ever performed on camera. I'm serious. Stevie was the greatest musician to have ever graced this world. Lenny, a song he wrote for his wife, literally brings tears to your eyes, not just for its beauty, but because you know that however long you could try, you could never express your love so clearly as he could with his instrument. He played his songs differently every single time he played them, not one being the same as the last!

SRV is my GOAT. He's my favorite artist in any genre. I've watched his videos hundreds of times and I'm still mesmerized as if it was my 1st time. I was fortunate enough to see him live 3 month's before his untimely death. I remember hearing of his death on the radio. I was in my car and had to pull over to let what I was hearing sink in. To answer some of your questions, Stevie died in a helicopter accident leaving a concert where he had performed with an all star lineup that included his older brother Jimmy Vaughn and his band The Fabulous Thunderbirds.

Jimi created this song but Stevie perfected it! Stevie idolized Jimi, this was his tribute to Jimi. Texas Flood live from the El Mocombo is the most impressive performance I've ever seen! Stevie on stage was a beast but offstage he was a kind & humble soul. He had so many hurdles to jump in his short lifetime but he overcame it all & spent the last 4 years of his life clean & sober and using his spare time helping other people do the same. Eric Clapton was once quoted as saying something along the lines of not being able to watch Stevie Ray play live for more than a half hour or so without beginning to doubt himself a little. Where others played music, music just flowed from Stevie. You mentioned it, no breaks, he just starts playing and it begins to flow. Somewhere on KZbin there is a lo-fi video of Stevie Ray doing a sound check early in the day before a concert, yawning and looking as if he just rolled out of bed and threw on a trench coat. I think you'll find it nearly as stunning as this, though the sound quality is a bit lower than this is.

It was said he had done drugs but toward the end of his life he became clean. I’ve also heard he gave his life to the Lord and was humble and a good man. His talent was self taught because he didn’t read music. His guitar strings were a gauge 12.

The wah wah pedal with added distortion is his go to along with a looper. SRV would stretch his strings up 3 or more notes and often broke strings and continued playing with the rest. Truly a GOAT.

I'm not certain if he was using it for this performance, but for awhile Stevie was using Jimi Hendrix's wah pedal, which Jimi's family provided to Stevie because of the deep respect he had and always showed for Jimi's music.

My dad used to go watch him and he would sit down at their table inside Stubb's BBQ (the original one in Lubbock) and play Lenny. Friend of mine worked security at a concert venue in Louisville, KY back in the late 80's and saw hundreds of shows. To this day he says SRV was the best concert he ever saw. He said Stevie Ray played for about an hour and half, took a 20 minute intermission, came back out and played for another two hours. Man I envy my friend.

4:17 He had a foot pedal that was a killswitch, that cut out the signal from the guitar to the amp. He would bend a note, and then repeatedly hit the killswitch as he released the note. It's an awesome sound, produced by a fairly simple technique.

Jimmie Vaughan is still living & playing. He won a Grammy 2 or 3 years ago! He is Stevie's older brother and a self-taught guitarist who inspired 9 year old Stevie to likewise learn without lessons or the ability to read music. Jimmie was a prodigy well known in the Dallas area & dropped out of high school to pursue his dream, eventually settling in Austin and forming the renowned blues band "The Thunderbirds". At 17, Stevie quit school for the Austin music scene himself and after several years of playing clubs with various bands, formed Double Trouble with Chris Layton on drums & Tommy Shannon on bass. Later, Reese Wynans was added on keys. Stevie gave, and gained, respect & admiration from guitar greats such as Albert King, Albert Collins, BB King, Eric Clapton and others, many of who he played with and footage is on KZbin. He died in a helicopter crash in 1990 after a show at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin, at just 35 and nearing the peak of his career. Months before his death, he and Jimmie got to fulfill their dream of making an album together. Family Style, released after Stevie's death, included the song Tick Tock, which was played at Stevie's funeral.

There's never been a better "guitar player" on this planet. He also uses 12 to 15 gauge strings which would rip the fingers of many players, including Stevie's. But it gave his tone a unique sound.

👏🙌‼️ great reaction guys💯. This is an artist so meshed and melded with his guitar that they share the spirit and power of a musical tsunami🎶. He started playing at age 7 because his older brother (by 3 years) played. He instantly got the bug and spent every waking moment playing. He would listen to records of all the blues OG's and taught himself. He found if could sound out the note with his mouth he could find it on the guitar. And because he couldn't see the performances he believed a guitarist should be playing both rhythm and lead so he plays both and sometimes at the same time‼️. I will suggest checking two different performances. One is from this same night at Austin City Limits 1989 called Riveria Paradise written by Stevie after his rehab and recovery dedicated to those still in the grip of addiction. It is a beautiful instrumental showcasing different skills sets with a bit of a jazzy feel. The other is Tin Pan Alley with Johnny Copeland Montreux Jazz Festival 1985. It is a master class in down and dirty blues by two of the best to do it.💙💙🎶 and real magic was happening that night. Side note: Double Trouble was a trio for many years but in 1985 they brought on a pianist that brought so much richness to the group. He is top notch as they all are. Thanks for bringing this today👏✌️🙌

ooooooo weeeeeeee Born and raised in Dallas! That Texas boy sure could play! RIP Stevie! I used to go to bar down in Austin, TX where he used to play. It was called Joes Generic Bar, on 6th street. Tiny place, could hold maybe 75 people at a time, only sold bottled beer, folding chairs only and their sign outside was a bar code. Uneven floors and a small stage, behind which was shrine to Stevie. In the early nineties one night there was really young kid with blonde hair shredding it. When he finished playing he introduced himself as Kenny Wayne Shepperd. True story

You can watch this man play in many videos and you can't help noticing his unique style and tone. Many suggest that the equipment or large gage strings provide these unique qualities. I'm sure these things may contribute to his tone, but it's really just Stevie. You watch him play a song, the string breaks and yet he keeps playing and doesn't miss a lick. He then switches guitars in mid-song and, again, he does it without missing a note. I saw a video on KZbin where Stevie was in the audience at a club in Texas where another band was playing on stage. I don't know all the circumstances, but Stevie is seen making his way up to the stage. He greets the members of the band to the applause of the crowd in the club. The lead guitar player of the band hands Stevie his own guitar. Stevie takes the guitar, plucks a few warm up notes, and then launches into the opening riffs of a song they agreed to play. That tone that is so unique to SRV was vividly evident. He didn't tune the guitar, make any adjustments at all. He just took off and ran with it. I think the man could have played Voodoo Chile on a ukulele.

Stevie Ray taught himself how to play guitar, but since he never had a real lesson or seen a live show before he thought everybody played both rhythm and lead guitar at the same time so that's what he taught himself. Pure God given talent! SRV used the heaviest gauge strings made and was able to bend them like no one else could, and breaking them at times only to continue on until he could change his guitar, in mid song. His band ,Double Trouble started out with just the drummer, Chris Layton, and bass player, Tommy Shannon. They added the keyboard player, Reese Wynans to complete the band later. They are all great talents that had to be to keep up with SRV and the way he played. He never played a song the same way. SRV could not read music, purely self taught. His influences were his brother Jimmie Vaughan (Fabulous Thunderbirds), Jimi Hendrix, BB King, Albert King and pretty much all of the blues artists that he grew up listening to. He loved and respected them, and they felt the same about him. Great reaction! You have quite the SRV rabbit hole to go down. Clapton once said that he was in his car, driving when he first heard Stevie. He pulled over to listen because "I simply had to hear this guy." That pedal was a gift to SRV from the Hendrixs'.

I was at Stevie Ray Vaughn's last concert at Alpine Valley, Wisconsin August 26th 1990 the night his helicopter crashed after the show. The next morning when I heard the horrible news was one of the saddest days of my life. The lineup was SRV, Eric Clapton, Robert Cray and Buddy Guy. RIP SRV!🎸🎵🎶🎵

SRV is on my guitar Mt Rushmore along with David Gilmour, Eddie Van Halen, and the originator of this very song Jimi. When SRV finishes a song we all need a smoke and so does the guitar.

TEXAS FLOOD from 'Live at the El Mocombo,' in Toronto. Incredible performance and the witnessing of total engagement! I am certain you both would be entertained.... but, isn't that what it's all about? I was very young and saw him live at that concert..... it changed my perception of music (all genres) forever. Stevie (R.I.P.) gave ALL of himself in and to that performance. Worthy of filing away in your soul as a reference to all who think themselves above the music. Once done listening and seeing, I would be most interested in what you both are feeling at the moment. Thank you. 😮😵‍💫😃😂

That "something about him" statement that you used, what it is or what is it? It's a drawing in, it's a powerful attraction/addiction. Most people can't put the right words together to express what they're attempting to communicate about what they are experiencing, emotional, physical, etc. Complete package of what true greatness does to a person when they hear it.

Stevie Ray played both rhythm and lead guitar at the same time on one guitar. Not to shabby for a self-taught guitarist and who also can't read music. He picked up his first guitar at the ripe ol' age of 7. SRV was already this good playing guitar before he was 21.
