You have got to open up the Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis vault...These guys were the "can't stop, won't stop" duo of the 80s and 90s from an R&B perspective. If you want to see how they can wring the best out of any performer/group they work with, listen to two songs by New Edition, "Helplessly in Love" from the Dragnet soundtrack, then go listen to "Can You Stand the Rain" from their "Heartbreak" album. Same group of young men, but the maturity they pulled out of them between those two songs is telling. Then, go listen to some good "Quiet Storm" material from them from the S.O.S. Band in "No One's Gonna Love You" and "Sunshine" by Alexander O'Neal...then you will appreciate the genius of these two guys. They also produced Mary J. Blige's "No More Drama", a song I know you liked...😉

OMG I love this song. It has a daunting and Adventurous vibe to it. This song makes me feel like I'm flying through a stormy sky in the middle of the dark night in hope of finding light. Plus this song was Produced by the legendary Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis who are responsible for producing the biggest Pop hits during the 1980s, 90s and early 2000s. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis were discovered by the Iconic Prince and were part of his group and musical protegee, The Time with Morris Day. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are responsible for producing if not all of Janet Jackson's mega hits, they've also produced for Mariah Carey, Usher Boys To Men, New Edition, Bruno Mars and so many globally mega artists. I believe that Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis have made 41 top 10 hits in the US and 31 top 10 hits in the UK. They are absolute legends and have inspired other mega producers like Babyface and L.A. Reid, Teddy Riley, Dallas Austin, Jermaine Dupri, Timbaland, Pharrell and Chad Hugo, Rodney "Darkchild" Jenkins, etc so many greats.

The fact is the male singer did not want to sing this song because he did not write it. He agreed to do ONE TAKE on the song, and they made the video in lip sync only, but if you look at how he looks down after she tells him she was human too, you can see that he does feel the song.

Interesting observation regarding the stoic quality in Phil's voice. Human League were one of the first all electronic bands to come out of England at the beginning of the New Wave movement. Most of their music was more emotionless. As noted below, Human League were very influential as were other electronic bands like Heaven 17, Kraftwerk, Thomas Dolby and Depeche Mode. Other Human League songs to explore: The Lebanon (my favorite), Love Action, Seconds, Fascination. Great reaction Anton!

Basically Phil's trying to apologize to her for cheating on her while they were in a long distance relationship, using the excuse that he's only human who's born to make mistakes. IMO cheating is an unforgivable act and I would never get back with a partner who has cheated on me. She then responds by saying "while we were apart, I was human too," meaning that she cheated on him at the same time she was being cheated on. I'll never forget the first time I heard this song when I was SHOOK by the plot twist lol but I'm glad to call this my all-time favorite song because the production is exquisite & timeless :) So thank you for reacting to this gem, you've earned a new subscriber ;)

This might be the quintessential ‘80s pop song. The arpeggiated piano chords are some of the most gorgeous ones that I’ve ever heard in a song. The Human League has lots of great music that you should check out in future reactions, primarily from their 1981 album, Dare; namely, *Don’t You Want Me* and *Love Action.* As mentioned please react to *Jeff Buckley - Grace (BBC Late Show).*

The female singing in the song isn't actually by either of the woman in the video. Officially, at least at this point, The Human League consisted of five members, though only the three vocalists - Philip Oakey and the two women, Susan Ann Sulley and Joanne Cattherall - were shown on the album cover. Sulley and Cattherall had typically done vocals on prior records, but for this one the group teamed up with some hot new producers who radically changed the group's sound. To be frank, none of the members were particularly good singers, technically speaking. Interesting voices, but lacking much in the way of power and control and frequently at least a little off-key even on the studio recordings. For the backing vocals of this song the new producers had professional studio musicians come in and record the female parts to make them sound better, with the band member lipsynching to them in the video. The spoken word section was added to this song at the band's request so that Joanne Cattherall would have something to do. That's her voice talking, but as soon as it switches back to actual singing it's an off-screen studio vocalist again.

Human League are a very interesting band. Very influential and went through various incarnations and crossed genres. The band’s early 80s output like “Being Boiled” is experimental to huge hits like “Don’t You Want Me” (from album Dare) and later on they became more commercial in sound generally with a brief resurgence in the 90s with another change in direction musically.

One of my favorites from the 80s. Great atmospheric instrumental. I also love Human League's lesser-known song "Heart Like A Wheel". I used to listen to Top 40 countdowns every week, and I remember "Human" on the charts at the same time as another memorable 80s song, Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors" (which I hope you'll react to someday).

The Human League were hugely influential - the original line-up released 2 albums with limited success (although massive in Sheffield from where they hail ) - following the split, Phil/Adrian kept the name and formed the successful HL, producing one of the most influential albums of the time, Dare, before going on to produce multiple discs and even today the HL are still going. The remaining ex-members Martin Ware/Ian Craig Marsh formed Heaven 17 (react to Temptation?) and the production company British Electric Foundation (BEF) who produced albums such as Music of Quality and Distinction where they worked with multiple vocal artists (they worked with Tina Turner on Ball of Confusion, one track on the album which, may be thought of as her first step back on the ladder to super stardom). Saw H17 a couple of years back, still a great band live. Saw HL at their height - the think I remember most was how the bass synth would hammer in your chest whilst some of the high synth notes would spear you through your abdomen - sound felt and heard.

“The tears I cry aren’t tears of pain, They’re only to hide my gluten shame.” That spoken word verse wasn’t even supposed to be in the song; it was a compromise between the band and the writers of this tune, Jam & Lewis. The Human League wanted to have the two female members, Suzanne Sully and Joanne Catherall, to sing on the track, but Jam & Lewis insisted on using their own preferred female singers, so the female backup singers in this song are not actually the two girls from the band. This led to the band and Jam & Lewis agreeing to allow Joanne to do the aforementioned spoken word bit in order to satisfy both parties. I think that was a good compromise and it lends an interesting quality to the song that otherwise would not have been included, had the band originally gotten their way. I really appreciate how articulate and thoughtful your analyses are. God has blessed you with a great intellect. You seem like someone that probably reads a lot. On that note, I would gently urge you to read C.S. Lewis’ signature classics (8 volumes). I think you would get a lot out of his astute insights. The books include: Mere Christianity The Screwtape Letters The Great Divorce The Problem of Pain Miracles A Grief Observed Abolition of Man The Four Loves
